************************************************************ MIDNIGHT SUN ONLINE The Online Newsletter for Robert E. Peary High School Alumni Volume 9, Number 7 February 2005 MSO WEBSITE - http://www.pearyhs.org ************************************************************ INTRODUCTION Greetings Huskies, In this issue... Intro with general items and class reunion info, Classmate Updates, and Condolence Notices. CLASSES OF 1970 AND 1974 MERGE: Of sorts. The fifth Peary wedding, partially as a result of classmates reconnecting via MSO, has occured between a 1970 alumnus and 1974 alumna! The wedding was witnessed by "Punxsutawney Phil" (yes, "the" groundhog) on Groundhog Day. We'll let you read the alumna's account in this newsletter. Congrats to the newlyweds! OPEN HOUSE: Thanks to all who attended John Philbin's (1975) open house event at Philbin's Fitness Center with co-owner Redskin James Thrash. High school sports and MCPS physicals were conducted, and free agility tests were performed. Peary alumni receive discounts at the facility. A "HUSKY PUP": Matilda Ann Warner, the firstborn of Mike (1980 - MCWarn323@comcast.net) and Kim Warner, was born on January 15, 2005 at 7:45 a.m. - 7 pounds, 9 ounces; 19 1/2 inches Matilda, named after her Great Grandma Warner. She joins 4 grandparents, 11 aunts and uncles, and 21 cousins! There is a photo of Matilda linked from the "Alumni Births" page for viewing on the MSO site. There is another "grandpa" notice in this issue, too. Congrats! ---------- ALUMNUS' SON: From Paul Tangredi (1973) - "A lot has happened in the last 6 months, I now live in Philly (never be an Eagles fan though). If any alumni live in the area, contact me - I know no one up here. On Oct 13, 2004 my oldest son David was in a terrible car accident he has been in a coma for 3.5 months. He's getting better but very slowly. Please check out his website at www.checkplusmusic.com for more info. Keep him in your thoughts and hope for the best. Again contact me if you live in the Philly area... would like to see some old classmates." [Paul can be contacted directly at platotang@aol.com - There is donation information on the mentioned website to assist with David's medical bills, as well as David's progress reports.] ---------- ALUMS IN THE NEWS/CONGRATS: To Brian McLaren (1974), who was selected as one of Time Magazine's "Top 25 Most Influential Evangelicals" in the country (early February Time issue). Brian appeared on Larry King Live February 1. Thanks to Meredith Way Morris (1974) for: 1) having her TV on, and 2) letting us know! To Lisa Salsitz-Talmud (1981), aka Allie Raye, who made her E.R. debut February 24 on NBC as surgical nurse character "Lorraine," and was interviewed on DC area Channel 4 by Arch Campbell that aired the same day. Arch: "She's from Rockville Maryland and graduated from Peary High School" Lisa: "Go Huskies!" To Lisa Couturier (1980) on the release of her new book and several print reviews and television appearances (see the announcement and info in this newsletter). To Pam Forder Holcomb (1975) who was featured in the New Market edition of the Gazette: "Pam Holcomb has spent the last two years fighting for Urbana to get its own post office, and she's not backing down until she wins." This entire article may be viewed online at http://www.gazette.net/200506/newmarket/news/259333-1.html To Brad Oscar (1982), Peary's broadway star in "The Producers" at the St. James Theatre, was seen on HGTV recently - see the news item in this newsletter from Ann Hoffman McKee (1965). E-MAIL ADDRESS(ES) UPDATE FORM: This online form was down for a few weeks until alumnus Michael Sandoe (1980) let us know there was a problem. Thanks Michael! We apologize for any incovenience this may have caused some classmates during February. Also a reminder that there are some offsite chat groups for Peary alums to strike-up discussions: General - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pearyhs Moderator Bill Loewy (1978) GLBTA - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PearyGLBTA Moderator Michael Deborah Gray (1973) ---------- CONDOLENCES/SAD NEWS ITEMS: As consensus dictates, these notices are posted at the end of each newsletter. Class-specific notices of arrangements/memorial services are sent on behalf of the families as soon as the information is known and as we are able; minimally, the notices are posted on the Peary MSO website. Thus, please check the website occasionally for any news items between the newsletter issues. As for the frequency of sad news items recently, I cannot state it better than how an alumnus, who lost a parent recently, and was also the close friend of one our recently-departed classmates has... "Among 4,000 plus alumni [aboard MSO] who are between 37 and 60 years old and their families, there will be an endless array of events, some expected and some not so. Such is life." It is MSO's goal to keep alumni in touch with each other and to report news items... both happy and sad. ---------- MORE MUSIC/SOUNDS: In addition to the recordings mentioned in the last newsletter with Bobby DeSantis's (1978) update and his Stage Band recordings find/offer, and the editor's side note of Patsy Zukav's (1984) find... well, Patsy, in addition to the A Cappella and Choruses recordings (year? - under the direction of Mr. Hubbard), found an LP (for you youngsters, that's a "vinyl disc that has grooves in it" - just kidding!) of "The Sounds of Peary High School" from 1970. On it: the choir (Mr. Hubbard), Pipe Band with the Glasgow Police Pipers, the Peary Band (Mr. Hunt), ship's bell, cheerleads, Mascot "King," remarks by Dr. Dunn, and a trumpet fanfare performed by Steve Perantoni, Richard Glover, and Ralph Jones (all Class of 1971). We'll eventually digitize the recordings. Depending on file size/formats, they may be made available online, or transfered to a CD. Thanks Bobby and Patsy... for keeping these treasures alive and sharing with everyone! Best guess is that the A Cappella/Choruses (girls and mixed) album is circa 1970 (if anyone knows for sure, please let us know). ---------- INFO FOR YOUR CLASS RECORDS: The class coordinators cannot stress enough, the need for you to make sure your information is up-to-date in their class databases! If you've moved since your last reunion, or you never got an invitation, or you want to receive the next one's mailing, be sure to use the "(Sign-up)/Update" link on MSO. Your class can then update (or confirm) your contact info. If you're not sure, do it anyway - each class would rather receive redundant info, than have incorrect info in contact records! You can also assist reunion committees by viewing the classes' "missing persons" list (linked from each class info section - most classes have one compiled and it's updated as classmates are "found"). Some of you probably know where some of these "missing" folks are! REUNIONS IN 2005.... After completing 20 years in the military we are moving back to our property near Dallas, Texas later this year! My two oldest children will be entering the public high school in August (10th & 11th grade). They have been "home schooled." They are currently enrolled in Seton which is accredited by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) and which has been ruled a private school by the state of Virginia. The Texas public high schools are also accredited by SACS. I am concerned that the public high school might not accept their credits. If anyone has gone through this process, I would appreciate ANY information or anecdotes. I had surgery for thyroid cancer 13 months ago and just the past three weeks, I am finally feeling better! If you are diagnosed with cancer, I highly recommend the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX and I would NOT recommend the UCLA Medical Center. Our children make life adventurous! Alex and I have been married 22 years and have five children: Paula - 16, Laura - 14, Joe - 11, Carl - 3, and Patrick - 1. Sometimes it feels like we are white-water rafting and the adults are hanging on for survival while the kids steer. Best wishes to all! ********** From: jay herron (1970) Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2005 Subject: new grandchildren I am really thrilled that this past December my oldest son-Micah and his wife Terri delivered me into grandpa-ship with the birth of thier son Corey. Micah is currently at sea aboard the USS Los Angeles and was gone for the birth but fortunatly was able to fly home from Singapore to be introduced to his first born. It will be August 2005 before he will be reunited and return home to be with his boy. My youngest son,Joel, and his wife Melody delivered my second grand baby-a little girl named Judith a few days after my first grand baby was born. Joel and his wife are the brave ones-delivered the baby at home with a mid wife in attendence. Joel is a deputy here with the Alachua county (Florida) sheriffs office so he is receiving daily blessings to be near his little one. So theres not much more to bragg about except the grin on my face is starting to make my face sore... ********** From: Phyllis Levine Oresky (1974) Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2005 Subject: Update Occupation: Dialysis Social Worker, Spouse: Saul, Children: Rachel age 22, Joel age 19, Ilan age 14 Memorable Incidents: I enjoyed playing piano (poorly, on purpose) for "The Little Foxes." Band trips, especially the trip to Verona, NJ my sophomore year. Marching in the Hagerstown parade at night around Halloween my sophomore year. Now I live near there. Band contest at Gaithersburg High, back when it was way out in farm country! Since High School: This is an update partially due to MSO website. In 1999 I contacted Jack Marble, class of 70, as I was contacting those I'd lost touch with from the listed email addresses. His sister, Jean (class of 74) was my best friend in high school, & I was always at her house, included in family events, etc. I had quite a crush on Jack at the time, but was too young at that time to be noticed as a potential girlfriend. Within 2 weeks of sending that email, we were dating! But the big news is, we got married on Feb. 2, 2005 up in Punxsutawney, PA (Groundhog Day). Some of those in attendance were: Punxsutawney Phil himself (THE groundhog), His Handler (in black tie, tails & top hat), Lou Knecht (class of 70) & wife, Cheryl; Rick Porter (class of 70); and Frank Hearl (class of 70) with wife, Teresa. Frank took tons of EXCELLENT pictures of the event, & the next day the local paper had a half-page article on us! It was magical, & I'm happier than I've ever been in my life! Thanks, MSO! MSO was the catalyst! Future Plans: The best years of my life started when I started dating Jack, & just got tons better - so, making up for lost time! Memorable Teachers: Mr. Hunt. He was so real & really cared & worked with, taught those who wanted it. His music theory classes were really great & he gave students a chance to conduct, have their musical compositions played, etc. And Mr. Boteler. Had him for English my senior year & he still remembers me! Because he really gave of himself too, & taught even more valuable life lessons than he did English. To this day I believe in the lessons of "The Little Prince" & retell his story of the warm fuzzies vs. the cold pricklies. -- The wedding feature is in the Punxsutawney Spirit paper and may be viewed online at http://www.punxsutawneyspirit.com/articles/2005/02/03/news/news2.txt Some photos from the wedding are linked at the MSO site main page. ********** From: MARY SPONAUGLE MCCUNE-BATES (1965) Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2005 Subject: Update Occupation: RETIRED, Children: RICHARD 38, GARY JR. 37, ADAM 27, DIXIE 22, AMANDA 21, SANDI 19; Grandchildren: WAIDE 8, CHEYENNE 6, ANGEL 4, FAITH 3, ELIJAH 1, ROBERT 1, AND 30 MORE Memorable Incident: WHEN THE ANCHOR BECAME MISSING Since High School: ALOT OF ADVENTURES AND NEW EXPERIENCES Future Plans: TO TRAVEL CROSS COUNTRY IN MY R.V. We've lost approximately 71 people since the last reunion and would like to get our classmates list back up to only lost 30 again. I have used up all my resources and search vessels trying to find people... maybe some of you classmates know where these people have moved. On a personal note for the class of '66, Donna's doing real well with her two new hip replacements. Donna and her husband are going to Florida to visit her son who turns 30 this year. I get to babysit the four cats - no fun but interesting. For class of '63, Jimmy is doing fine in Atlanta.. little touch and go for where he will work but it looks like his boss is leaning towards leaving him in Georgia. Class of '85, Jeannie Brown Seal is doing real well in her home but having a little trouble with nerves in her hands and doctor checking it out now. Class of '83 Patty and Becky Toler doing fine. Patty is living with us now with her child and oh what fun having a teen in the house again. Just think class of '83 this will be your 40th year on this earth - ain't it fun.
