Thanks-- Lynn Draize Jones/1980 - LaLollie2278@aol.com [And remember to check the links on the MSO main page for the "Take a Soldier to the Movies" project (John Seng 1975), and "Military Care Packages" (Skip FitzGerald 1976 and Karen Wilson FitzGerald 1981)] NEWS STORY: "Briton tries to settle debate on whether Peary reached North Pole first" - thanks Sue Baker Tarpley (1965) who shared this item with us from Yahoo news: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20041002/sc_afp/britain_us_arctic_041002123850 THE ALUMNI CONNECTION AT WORK: Thanks to Rusty Chester (1970) who was able to supply some information to a 1978 alum regarding the passing (fall 2003) of Mr. Belcher (Industrial Arts). The grad years don't matter too much - it's one huge Peary alumni family. PEARY BOYS COACHING: Here's some great news from Skip FitzGerald (1976) that will be of interest to all of our Peary moms and dads (and all former teachers/coaches) that the tradition carries-on. Thanks, Skip! "These apples don't fall far from the tree" If you thought that Peary football was dead and buried, well think again. The blue and white, and now silver is alive and well in Frederick County, or should I say in the Urbana area. Urbana located in southern Frederick County adjacent to Montgomery County has become home to a thriving youth football program, which is part of the Linganore-Urbana Youth Athletic Association or LUYAA for short. The Urbana Hawks youth football feeds directly into the Urbana High School program, which has enjoyed tremendous success since their opening 10 years ago. The youth program has six teams entered into the Carroll County Football League with Peary alumni coaching on four of those teams. Two of my sons now play for the Hawks and both are coached by two Peary boys each. Mike Fox-'76, Head Coach and his assistant Keith Ricker-'84 are coaches on the Junior Pony team, Willie Monahan-'76 and Brian Otto-'77 are coaches on the Pony team, Craig Chase-'77 and John "Mutt" Monahan-'78 are coaches on the JV team, and Dave Sowers-'81, Head Coach and Mike Monahan-'73 are coaches on the Varsity. As you can see, that's a lot of Peary boys dedicating their time and energy to coaching our kids. The helmets are white with the blue stripe, the jerseys dark blue, but the pants are silver, which is close enough. It's not hard to see some of yourself in your kids. You can also see some of the old Peary coaches in the Peary boys. The coaches take things as serious as they need to be, but not so serious, as these kids have fun too! The coaches have created a family atmosphere, where pizza parties, one on one instruction, and words of encouragement are the norm. That can't be said of all youth associations. All the teams are very competitive, with several headed to the playoffs with Super Bowl berths at stake. When the whistle blows, it's all business, as these teams don't quit. Just like the old Peary teams, these teams fight until the end. Coaches Burlas, Black, Brace, Baker, Williams and of course Cino to name just a few would be proud of our old Peary boys giving back to the community. Some of what we learned while Huskies has been passed down to the Peary boys, with that being passed down to our boys, except of course a passing game, which this generation of players fully utilizes (Ha, Ha). I have run into many other Peary alumni whose boys also play football for Urbana and are coached by the Peary boys, not to mention some of our rivals from the old days. Most any Friday night, you can attend a high school game at Urbana, Linganore, or Damascus, and run into Peary alumni. Thanks guys for your time, effort, and dedication to the kids. The blue, white, and now silver is alive and well, with some our time honored traditions being passed down to the next generation. Skip FitzGerald-'76 PEARYMANIA III: Seacrets/Ocean City on October 2, 2004. Well, the Class of 1971 again had the most attendees - three years straight now! It's been quite a season and were still here to stay. I live in Cape Coral which is close to Ft. Myers. We got hit by Hurricane Charlie pretty good. Lost several palm trees, shingles and our electricity for 6 days. Pool cage is damaged but we still came out alive and well. We were a little scared when it hit but we're all fine now. 10 miles to the north of us got hit the worse (Punta Gorda). I've lived down here now for 18 years and have never experienced anything like that before. I always knew we'd get hit one day and let's hope this was our only day. Hurricane season is not over yet. We have until Nov. 30th to be glued to the weather channel, then it's back to beautiful paradise. I do know alot of people that were not as fortunate as us and could use help through the Red Cross. Thanks for thinking of us. This comes with sincere appreciation. Kelly PS. Hi to classmates in 1979-80. I often think of those days and still dream of them weekly. I just don't want to let go of the good ol days. ********** From: Melissa Cohen Foster (1983) Date: Wed, 29 Sep 2004 Subject: Update Occupation: Career Consultant & Real Estate Agent, Spouse: Les (PM&R Physician), Children: I have six kids, my four boys... At the time, Tom had 7 years left to be able to retire from the US Capitol Police Department. To make a long story short, we decided the stress of his job was taking a toll on our family and we decided to "retire" and move to the beach. Our boys, Greg (21) and Daniel (18), have graduated and and working full time and are staying in Rockville for the time being. Right now we are being beach bums and getting used to the slower life style of the South. We are very excited about our new life and adventures ahead of us. Hope to see you at the beach! Karen ********** From: Patricia Krum Ginalick (1969) Date: Sat, 2 Oct 2004 Subject: Update I have been re-reading everyone's notes in all the archived newsletters and mine looked rather skimpy so I'll add a little more.... Since graduating I married had 3 children, then returned to school and graduated from Shepherd College (Shepherdstown, WV) with a nursing degree. Divorce followed....then marriage to my high school sweetheart Matt Ginalick (a 1966 graduate of Wheaton). We live in Mt. Airy, MD and work together in Matt's electrical/heating & air conditioning business. I needed a break from nursing! Empty nest syndrome set in and we now have a second batch of kids - the 4-legged kind - 3 St. Bernards. There are more pictures of our dogs on the refrigerator than of our 4 grandchildren.. I've been thinking back to my 3 years at Peary and thought of some of my memorable incidents: dancing in the cafeteria (I was an observer - too shy to dance). Occasionally one of the teachers would un-plug the juke box if the song was thought to be a little risque'.....only to have it re-plugged in by one of the guys....all those objects moved to the senior court yard!....Cutting class with Debbie Brite and writing letters to our boyfriends.....Skipping school and going to Debbie's house and listening to records ("Boogaloo Down Broadway")....our NYC class trip and sleeping through the entire Radio City Music Hall production as we'd been goofing off all night in the hotel.... What great memories! Memorable teachers: Mrs. Glass - what a lady. Mr. Lewis (geometry) - he was tough and could always tell what was going on in back of the room. Mrs. Sykes (algebra) - I remember her dangling Christmas tree earrings. Mrs. Gail (English) - gave me such an appreciation (and a little understanding) of Shakespeare even though I was in way over my head. Mr. Moore (driver's ed) - the first time I drove on the road I ran the stop sign at the intersection of Aspen Hill and Georgia Avenue (before the days of road widening and a traffic light) and he calmly checked off my error on his clipboard and said, "Always remember when you sit behind the wheel of a car DEATH is sitting right beside you." He then directed us to his home in Wheaton and went inside to "put some laundry in the dryer." I never had the good fortune of having Mr. Hill - but he had a way of knowing everyone and acknowledged us all! What a special presence. Mrs. Luck (math) - I remember her lessons about girls never chewing gum in public! She taught us so much in addition to math. The MSO is such a wonderful tool ....... ********** From: Kevin Smith (1975) Date: Sun, 3 Oct 2004 Subject: Update Website - http://www.wwcp.org (Christian Missions), Occupation: Minister/Missionary, Children: Sarah Elizabeth Smith-age 15, Rachel Marie Smith-age 12 Memorable Incidents: High school for me was one big blur. Unfortunately, most of the time we were drugging ourselves rather than focusing on school. I was going through lots of stuff in those years with my disfunctional but thankfully I made it through to a better life on the other side. Since High School: Since graduation, it took me a few years to get myself on the right path. I worked around Rockville and Silver Spring for a few years. And then in 1980, I gave my life to Christ and He changed me completely. It was an amazing transformation. I moved from Maryland down to Louisiana in 1981 and started working with a surverying/engineering company. The opportunity came for me to play guitar in a Christian Rock group on the 1980s and we recorded two albums (remember those things) and toured a lot in the south. After three years of being a Christian, I sensed the Lord's leadership into full-time ministry. So I attended Louisiana College and got my undergraduate degree. Met my future wife and got married in 1984. After college we moved to Memphis, Tennessee. During those years, we had two daughters and lived the life of ministry, serving in different churches. I also worked on my master's and doctoral degrees. After many years of hard work, I graduated in 1998 with my Doctor of Ministry degree. During these years I worked as a minister of music & youth, and as a senior pastor in various churches. In 1998, we started a new church in Grenada, Mississippi. It was my joy to see it grow and develop for five years. Unfortunately, at the same time my wife began to develop mental problems and last year she abandoned me and my two girls after 19 years of marriage. It has taken a toll on us but with the Lord's help we are doing well. I resigned my position as senior pastor and began working for the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention on a contract basis. I was editing and writing a college and seminary lecture series on the planting of new churches. I finished that project a few months ago and have since taken a position with World-Wide Church Planters. As their International Coordinator, I help churches in the States link with missionaries on the foreign field. We put together short-term mission projects where churches get a hands-on experience helping to start new churches overseas. Over the years I have also been heavily involved in mission work, sharing the Gospel of Christ around the world. I been on trips and led teams to Honduras, Russia, Togo West Africa, and The Dominican Republic. It's been a wonderful experience seeing the world and making a difference in the lives of those who need Christ. In addition, I continue to play music in a contempoary worship band in our church. I play bass and guitar. I also jam with a bunch of guys, playing classic rock from the 60s and 70s...just having fun. I also have a few students who take guitar and mandolin lessons from me. Future Plans: My dream is to continue to help churches in the States see their calling to assist in the work of church planting around the world. Additionally, I have the task of being a good and godly dad, raising my two daughters to go for their dreams and live good lives. I'm very proud of them both. They are working hard in school and making the honor roll. When they are grown and off to college, I will feel that I have accomplished something truly great in life. And though one day I will be gone, a part of me will live on through them as they go on to make their mark in the world. And so for the rest of my life, I plan on having fun. I'm going to see the world through my work, dine of exotic foods, experience different cultures, and have a blast serving Jesus! Memorable Teachers: My favorite teachers were Mintie Glass and the other art teacher...can't recall her name. She was young and a bit of a hippie as I recall. She was great! I'd love to hear from some of the people I hung out with back in my Peary days. If you're reading this, send me a note and let's get caught up. ********** From: Christopher Drayton (1980) Date: Fri, 8 Oct 2004 Subject: Update Occupation: Transportation Administrator, Children: Christopher II, Christopher (stepson), Cameron; Grandchildren: You MUST be kidding!
