************************************************************ MIDNIGHT SUN ONLINE The Online Newsletter for Robert E. Peary High School Alumni Volume 9, Number 2 September 2004 MSO WEBSITE - http://www.pearyhs.org ************************************************************ INTRODUCTION Greetings Huskies, In this issue... general news items, current events, reunion info, classmate updates/news, and condolence notices (unfortunately, this past month, a few). Much of this info is posted on the website in-between the newsletters - we cannot always distribute class-specific notices - so check the website often for timely news items (e.g. funeral/memorial notices and arrangements, and updates to reunions/events, etc.). PEARYMANIA III: Seacrets/Ocean City, Saturday October 2, 2004 - 6:00pm. $5 cover charge and pay-as-you-go for the bar. The number of attendees as grown over the past two years of this annual multi-class event - this year, there will again be hundreds in-attendance... and many flying out from the West coast for it. If you rarely attend any alumni events - well, this is the one to be at. Full details may be viewed at http:/www.pearyhs.org/events/pearymania-2004.html, including hotel information. Karen Lattea (1976) urges Class of 1976: "I think we should pump the class of 1976 to go to Seacrets!" And it's about time that another grad class beats-out the number of attendees from the Class of 1971, which has always had the most class members there! Have fun, and be safe! HURRICANE VICTIMS: Many of our alumni live in Florida. As you know, the recent hurricanes have affected everyone from Florida and the Southeastern U.S. through the mid-Atlantic. Many Peary Floridians... e-mail is still unavailable, understandably. We urge you to send a few dollars to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, at https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp, or the Salvation Army at http://www.redshield.org/crisis TAKE A SOLDIER TO THE MOVIES: From John Seng (1975)... My cousin Kathy Hintzke and her husband Bernie created a small way to help make life better for otherwise miserable soldiers in Iraq, including their 22-year old son, through their Family Readiness Group. I'm helping Kathy and Bernie publicize their "Operation: Take a Soldier to the Movies." If you read through the story and want to help, get the information from the article or click on the website www.soldiertomovies.org, created by my son Bobby and me. By the way, this campaign is non-partisan and is intended only to remind our fellow citizens in Iraq that those here at home are thinking of them. If you can forward this info to at least five of your friends or family members who might be interested, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, John Seng [See the complete story at Milwaukee Journal Sentinal, http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/sep04/259575.asp] ALSO... For general Military "Care Packages" for Peary alumni and children of alums that are serving overseas, please contact Skip Fitzgerald (1976) at fitzskjr@msn.com THANK YOU: To all who participated in the LINKS FOR CHARITY and the ASHP Research and Education Foundation's Ninth Annual Walter Jones Golf Classic on September 19, 2004 at Little Bennett. REUNIONS: All scheduled class reunion/events for 2004 are completed! Stay-tuned for reunion info for 2005... 1963-65, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, and 1969's "35+1." All reunion info will be posted on the Peary site as soon as it becomes is available. CLASS OF 1966: Planning for 2006 is underway. CLASS OF 1976: Planning for 2006. Contact Maureen Difulgo Bladen at moeatthebeach@aol.com with your ideas and thoughts. Photos of the 1979 and 1984 reunions are "in progress" and will be processed and posted on MSO over the next couple of weeks. HENRIKSEN/HINKELDEY: The clan got together recently in in honor of Howard Hinkeldey's (1972) 50th birthday. Some of the family members had not seen one another in at least 20 years. A photo is online on the main page. ANDY DANTZLER (1980): Seen on CNN's American Morning (and everywhere else) to discuss the NASA Genesis project. CNN scan/photo is posted on MSO main page. THANK YOU: Our supporters this past month... Rick Smith (1976), Linda Robbins (1978), Chris Smith (1968), Jeanne Hauprich Farmer (1976), Brian Baker (1971), Barry Boden (1981), Laura Barish (1978 and BL Jewelers - www.bljewels.com), Dave Kovack (1975) and Bev Royle Kovack (1978), and all of our monthly and quarterly "pledged" alumni for recurring donations. Visit the secure page, https://id267.securedata.net/pearyhs/donation.htm for info on how to support the MSO with a credit card or via snail-mail/ checks, and thanks in-advance for your consideration! We're pleased to let you know that MSO can now handle Diners/Carte Blanche, and JCB International for your convenience, along with Visa and MC. ONLINE FORMS: Please use the online forms for updates. If you've moved and need to udpate your mailing address for class contact records, use your respective class "Sign-up/Update" form. If you just have e-mail address changes, use the "E-mail Update" form. This will ensure your updates go to the right people (your class)! Many alternate e-mail listings need updating - please check your alumni listing at http://www.pearyhs.org/phslist.htm. And please read the forms (use common sense)... for example, the "E-mail Update" form is not a search engine to find alumni.... please do not submit alumni names into the "update my e-mail address" form and expect it to display a lost classmate - it is NOT a search engine. There is a Search link on MSO to find what (and who) is available through the MSO site. There is also no need to use the e-mail address update form to enter info that is already displayed and correct in the main online listing - if there is an explanation for the submission, there is a comment box for this purpose. This helps take the guesswork out of what your preferences are, and the subsequent time of e-mailing back-and-forth e-mailing to find out exactly it is you wish. We are handling classmates from 24 graduating classes - please do not assume we can read your mind... you need to let us know in the comment area provided on the forms. A few alums are receiving this month's issue of the newsletter as a result of either online RSVPs or via contact regarding the recent reunions (mainly Classes of 1979 and 1984) and your update submission has been previously requested in our replies. If you are one of these people, and still not in the listings - please use the Sign-up/Update form online so that your class may update its contact database. Thanks! Bob Lau, Editor/Webmaster - blau@viawest.net The Midnight Sun Online - Robert E. Peary High School P.S. If you wish to reply or comment, please don't quote the entire newsletter back. Create a new e-mail to blau@viawest.net. Always include your name and grad year in the correspondence. Again, we're working with 24 grad years here - searching for your name or e-mail address takes time just to find out who you are so that we can respond accordingly. ********************************************************************* From: Debbie Keady Hiltz (1969) Date: Thu, 2 Sep 2004 Subject: MSO Kids News Thomas Lee Hiltz, II, son of Debbie (Keady) Hiltz and Don Hiltz, was invited to Duke University this summer to be honored at their Grand Ceremony, which recognized 7th graders who had scored over 30 points in any portion of the ACT. Out of 87,000 kids, only 1100 were invited to the Grand Ceremony at Duke. Tommy just started 8th grade at Westbrook Christian School in Rainbow City, Alabama. He is president of the SGA (Student Government), plays JV football, water skis, and runs track. We are very proud of him! We had six children! Our three oldest are married and living out west. We do have one granddaughter (1) there as well. Our next three are unmarried but for the time being are here. We have a son (19) leaving in 2 months to serve our church as a missionary in Russia for two years! We will have mail and occassional e-mail while he is there. We are thrilled for him in this new adventure in his life. Our next son (17) enters college-this will be our 5th into college. And believe me it can be done! He will commute locally so will he really be here? Our final son (15) will again join me on my commute to our local high school where I teach and he learns? The house has become quieter and I have some regrets about the time passing....too quicky it passes. This summer as we witnessed our first son exchanging wedding vows on a Mass. beach, we recalled not too long ago hubby and I exchanged vows. Yikes! 27 years ago!! We have had many short wonderful years with our family...years that I would never trade. But who would have thought way back when in the halls of Peary High School, we would be parents and survive raising kids just like us!! Call me corny but the old school motto comes to mind-"I will find a way or make one". Thank you Peary High School. On another note-Any advice from those of you in the "Empty Nest" season of life? Lots of travel? I am ready to be taught these lessons. ********** From: Ellen Andrievich Quirk (1979) Date: Fri, 3 Sep 2004 Subject: Update How I found out about the website? I ran into Denise Anderson and then I received an email from Bob Lau. Occupation: Stay-at-home Mom, Spouse: David (Consulting Practice Manager), Children: Kaitlyn 14, Christina 11, Larisa 6 Memorable Incidents: Drama Club's production of "Dead End." Singing the Alma Mater solo at Convocation. Selling donuts in the lobby for Keyettes (what do Keyettes do, anyway?). Getting my back brace off for Senior year. Mr. Nawrocki split his pants during driver's ed and our car of student drivers had to take him home to change his pants. Since High School: I attended James Madison University and graduated with a BS in Geology. I received my MS, also in Geology, from Colorado State University. While I was there I met my future husband (Dave). We moved back to Maryland and I took a job as a Russian linguist for the National Security Agency, then moved on to an environmental consulting company as a geologist, going from full time to part time once our first daughter (Kaitlyn) was born. After daughter #2 (Christina) was born I quit my job and have been a full time mom ever since - and love it! Daughter #3 (Larisa) came along shortly before we moved to Olney in 1999. Since then I've been busy with the girls, volunteering at their schools, doing the PTA thing (I'm the middle school PTA co-pres), working with our Russian scouting organization, and spending a lot of time at the barn where our girls ride horses. Future Plans: Keep my primary focus at home on husband and children. I have no plans at this time for a "career" of any other kind, though I may take a part time "job" in the not too distant future, now that all three of the girls are in school all day. Memorable Teachers: Mr. Gibbs - he was a wonderful and inspiring English and drama teacher, had a great sense of humor and suffered a great deal of abuse from some of his students. Ms. Brewer - very laid back, encouraging and fun to be around. Ms. Bonaiuto - it was very important to her for her students to like her. I was upset to hear she died from her anorexia a year or two after our graduation. Other alums I know about? Dave Schwartzenerg, Carol Clatterbuck. ********** From: Lawrence Horne (1968) Date: Fri, 3 Sep 2004 Subject: Update I found out about the website while surfing. The nation was being torn apart by the war in Viet Nam, Nixon scandalized the free process of the election process and the Soviet Union was a major threat to our way of life. The talent and enthusiasm that boiled from the class of '70 was challenged. We had to go forth and let the rest of the world know that America was not to be messed with. As one on the pulse of the nations defense mechanism it became rapidly apparent to me the rest of the world could not win over our way of life. We were in turmoil yet we still projected a way our adversaries would not act on. That way was, and still is the fact our youth builds on principles built on before them. The principles I talk of are those of freedom, liberty and, pure grit. If I didn't learn anything else from the teachers, classmates and staff of Robert E. Peary, I did learn to never quit. That lesson is what I'm talking about when I say "grit". I could go on and talk of the current state of affairs in the world today. I am not trying to pass my opinions on to others, only to state that my years at my high school gave me faith, America's youth was, and still is the finest in the world. We had a tough world ahead of us. Our task was to make it work. We did it, and we will continue to do do it. We are dealing with a different world today. The terorist are knocking on our doors. We can not let them threaten our open society. I have been to a world that lives in fear of suicide bombers blowing up dreams and children. We can't allow that to happen. ********** From: Debbie Baskin Innocenti (1979) Date: Sun, 5 Sep 2004 Subject: Update I found out about the website from Lori Cohen. Occupation: SW Engineer, retired & Mother; Spouse: Jeff (IT Engineer), Children: Rochelle age 10, Jennifer age 7 Memorable Incident: The Senior Dinner stands out most in my mind. I was real sick and everyone was real nice and helpful to me. It showed how much my friends really cared. Since High School: I attended Salisbury College (now a University) and studied Mathematics. In my Junior year I was the President of the SGA, which surprised even me. After I graduated, I toured Europe with my parents for two weeks as my mother's companion. then I got a job in New Jersey at Teledyne-Brown working in the Ada programing language. That proved to be my ticket to a job in Belmont CA in the Silcon Valley. I have been living in CA since. In August of 1980, My roomate from College introduced me to Jeff Craig, a friend of her groom and told me that he was the perfect man for me. It took me 12 years of dating before I finally agreed with her and married him in 1992. We had our first child Rochelle shortly after in 1994. When she was 1&1/2 I started having severe headaches. Thanks to the HMO and my own confusion, it took 8 months to diagnose the problem. I had a brain tumor in the base of my brain. Fortunately, it was operable and not cancer. I am mostly OK, but I am no longer able to focus when I get tired. I was forced to retire from outside employment in 1999 because the stress was too much and tired me too much. Our Jennifer (don't you dare call her Jenny Craig) was born 1 year minus 1 day after my brain surgery. She was born with cranial synostosis (the soft spots or sutures of her skull were fused at birth). So far, she has had two surgeries to re-form her skull- one at 5 months and the other at 2 years 5 months. She is also slightly deaf. We are trying now to get her hearing aids. Overall I feel Blessed. My children are wonderful. They like each other and usually get along. They often obey me. They even like me. Future Plans: I plan to continue to raise my kids as best as I can. It is definitely the hardest job I've ever had. My husband is currently looking for a new job that doesn't demand his time 24X7. We are looking in all parts of the country. Memorable Teachers: I remember the world history teacher Mr. Clarke. I would like to thank him for teaching me how to outline. I remember how girls never wore skirts on map day. I also remember Mr Hill my Math teacher. I really learned from him and respected him. He always said "cruising for a bruising" if you were doing something wrong. I remember Mr. Kale. He came in mid-year to teach biology. I was really having trouble before he came. He was able to help me learn the topic which I hate to this day. I used to write notes on the backs of my tests after I finished where I would tease him about his name. Other alums I know about? My sister Margarete Minogue Wallace (1975) is in Martinez CA; my brother Patrick Minogue (1973) is in Reading CA. ********** From: Jeff Harris (1966) Date: Sat, 18 Sep 2004 Subject: Grandson Grandson William Jeffrey Harris born August 13, 2004 21 inches 7 LB 12 OZ my son Douglas' child. Christina (Swift) Dodd sent me info about the 25th reunion. Occupation: Homemaker/Volunteer, Spouse: Dan (Electro-optical Systems Engineer), Children: Pamela 18yrs, Cathleen 16yrs Since High School: I didn't actually graduate from Peary. I was new to Maryland in the 10th grade, having moved there over the summer from Carrollton, Texas. Then, in October 1978 (yes, during my senior year!!!) my family moved to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I graduated from the International School of Amsterdam in June 1979, in a class of 16 students. I served 5 years in the United States Air Force as a computer systems maintenance and repair specialist. I met my husband, Dan, while stationed at March AFB in California, and we were married in December 1981. We were stationed together in Virginia and Germany. I received an honorable discharge in October 1985, and our first daughter was born in November 1985 at Landstuhl Hospital. Our second daughter arrived in May 1988, also at an Army hospital--Ft Leonard Wood, MO. Dan remained in the USAF for a total of 21 years, retiring in 2000. Since living in Missouri, we lived in Omaha, NE, Dayton, OH, and now Albuqueque, NM. We decided to stay in Albuquerque so that the girls could go though their high school years at one school-- not three like me! I have spent my time raising our children and volunteering at various organizations, usually having to do with the girls. I currently help with a Girl Scout troop, volunteer at a food project, help with various aspects of the Band boosters, and make quilts to donate to the community. Future Plans: When our second daughter goes off to college in 2006, I plan to travel with Dan on his business trips, and maybe I'll take some college classes myself. Memorable Teachers: I enjoyed Mr. Gibbs' lectures on the books of John Steinbeck; it made me want to read all of the books and see all of the movies (although I haven't yet). I hated the vocabulary tests-- I didn't study very well for the first one and did poorly. Then I missed only one on the next two tests, but that earned me only a B+. You had to get everything correct to get an A. I also remember him pouring water on a sleeping student, waiting until Melissa Nutter took a picture before he slowly poured it over the guy's head. (See page 126 of the 1978 yearbook!) I liked Mrs Canning's gentle nature in French and Mr Pine's field trip into DC for Ancient and Medieval history. Both of these classes ended up being more valuable than I thought at the time since I subsequently lived in Europe twice. *********************************** *********** QUICK TAKES *********** *********************************** Juan Espinoza - Class of 1984 Occupation: Auto Mechanic, Spouse: Jenny (Site Manager), Children: Ashley Nicole 4 years 8/14/00, Jessica Anne 7 Months 2/3/04 Rosetta Riffle Kelley - Class of 1978 I found out about the website through word of mouth.
