************************************************************ MIDNIGHT SUN ONLINE The Online Newsletter for Robert E. Peary High School Alumni Volume 9, Number 10 May 2005 MSO WEBSITE - http://www.pearyhs.org ************************************************************ INTRODUCTION Greetings Huskies, In this issue... Intro with general news and reunion info, Classmate Updates, and Condolence Notices. Obviously we're a little late with this "MAY" newsletter (this is being distributed June 2). MEMORIAL DAY: Thanks to all who participated in Rockville Harley- Davidson/Battley's weekend party. The Tommy Lepson Band played at the dealership on Saturday with a free cook-out. Sponsored by battley.com and Bernie Keller (1974 - bkeller@battley.com) KOMEN RACE FOR THE CURE: As many of you know (who have been aboard MSO for several years), we remind you of this charitable event since many of our alumnae are breast cancer survivors or are currently battling the disease. Most of you know from over the years of your classmates who have dealt with this. Most recently knonw, Nan Kerpelman Sarb (1976), who was first diagnosed and treated two years ago - Nan's cancer has returned - now metastasis breast cancer to the lung. Nan remains active, however - between chemo, working part time and maintaining her non-profit group and her family activities, nothing stops her - she is a fighter! There is an update from Nan in this newsletter. We hope you will participate/contribute at natl-race-for-the-cure.org - the event (in DC) is this Saturday, June 4th. PEARYMANIA IV: From the organizing committee.... "Yes, it's that time again! Time to start planning this year's "PEARYMANIA IV - Out on Parole." Arrangements and setting the date at Seacrets is in-progress. In an effort to increase attendance at the event, Ms. Niepsey (1968) has agreed to bungee jump from the top of a palm tree during PEARYMANIA IV. Her enthusiasm and courage are admirable but we did what we could to talk her out of this dangerous publicity stunt. Please drop her a note and try to discourage her behavior. Remind her the sand will not break her fall if something goes wrong." [Uhhmmm, stay tuned for the plans and details about Pearymania IV, the annual multi-class event this fall. And see if any class can ever beat- out the Class of 1971 with the number of attendees!] REUNIONS IN 2006.... 1966: Mark your calendars for the 40-year event - August 18-20, 2006 Marriott at the Rio in Gaithersburg. Contact Gale Senseman Privette: gale7@juno.com 1970: The planning committee for the Class of 1970 Reunion has not been able to nail down details (date and place) to its liking in time to hold a 35-year reunion this year, and has decided to continue working on putting together a "35+1" event for the summer of 2006. However, the class encourages its classmates and challenges the classes before and after to attend the PEARYMANIA IV event in Ocean City, MD this fall. We will find a way or Fake one! 1971: June 23-25, 2006 - FSK Convention Center, Frederick MD Contact Roz Rubin: rubinroz@aol.com 1976: From Maureen Difulgo Bladen - Moeatthebeach@aol.com "Thank you for all your responses to the 1976 reunion survey! The majority of the comments have shown that your requests for our 30-year reunion are as follows: 1) Evening Happy Hour gathering and an all day Picnic/BBQ type function, 2) To be on a weekend in the summer. That's a start! My thoughts are some place such as Golden Bull for a Friday evening Happy Hour with hors d'oeurves and Smokey Glen Park for an all day event. Any comments or suggestions can be e-mailed to me directly. Those of you who have volunteered and want to help... e-mail me ASAP, and I will get in touch with you soon. Thanks again for all your responses to the online survey!" REUNIONS IN 2007.... 1967: 40-Year reunion planning has begun. Contact Audrey Gunnel Lohr at afgl@pobox.com if you're interested in assisting! MISSING CLASSMATES: The majority of grad years have a continually updated "missing persons" list on the MSO site. Many of those missing are siblings of currently-active alums on MSO. If you have a chance to view the lists, that would assist each grad year tremendously (instead of waiting until reunion planing time)! Ask your siblings to sign-on to the MSO so we and their respective classes can mark them as "found." THANK YOU to our recent supporters.... Create a new e-mail to blau@viawest.net, and always include your grad year and name in the correspondence (we can't easily recognize who xyz@aol.com is, for example, so please make it easier on us with at least a name or grad year that we can cross- reference). It's a little strange to be a college junior again after all of these years, but I'm looking forward to getting started on my new career. I have a BS in geology and had a short-lived career as an exploration geologist in the early 80s. I was able to work in some spectacular areas in Alaska and the Western U.S., but unfortunately it was very tough to find work in the Denver area in the mid/late 80s due to the recession. I made a career change to telecommunications and worked for 13 years before getting laid off twice (Avaya, Sun Microsystems) in less than 18 months. To make matters more exciting, my partner Lori also was laid off from Lucent in that time frame. After job hunting for over a year with no success I decided to start working on pre-requisites for nursing school. It was a little shocking to be in community colege classes with recent high school graduates but there were a fair number of middle-aged learners as well. I'm currently working as a clerk on a busy surgical unit at the University of Colorado Hospital, and it is a very interesting and educational place to work. Everyone works very hard, and it is gratifying to see our patients walk out of here and difficult when things don't work out so well for patients and their families. Nursing will be a big change from my previous careers, but I'm looking forward to doing work to help others. ********** From: Patricia (Patty) Leigh Toler (1983) Date: Fri, 29 Apr 2005 Subject: Update To clarify on the comment that my aunt, Elizabeth Brown Carter (class of 65), made [April 2005 newsletter]. The reason she said that is because I was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. Its called a Pineal Gland Cystic Tumor and I was also told that the cause of my chronic migraines (which have disabled me enough to where 3 doctors have said I am not allowed to work), is that excessive scar tissue has wrapped itself around the nerves at the base of the skull. I am under a doctor's care and was told that eventually I will have to have surgery. In the meantime as my aunt said, I am doing as well as can be expected for what I'm enduring right now. I'm trying not to let it control my life but it is hard. I've been trying to keep myself busy so I could take my mind off the fact that I might have to endure a surgical procedure and I've been doing my meditation, aromatherapy, etc, to try and alleviate the migraines when I first feel them getting ready to hit so that I can avoid taking med! ication. My daughter, Caitlin Brynn, will be 15 yrs old May 30th (yes, she's in that stage) and she's doing pretty good in school, better than she did in her other schools. She's a teenager and is going through stage of rebellion at the moment but I'm dealing with it, no big deal. I hope that everyone in the class of 1983 is doing well and as I've said many times, would love to hear from you, just to catch up, chat, etc. Email me if you want to chat and I'll be happy to give you my phone number (sorry I dont make my number public). Since High School: Dropped out and earned GED in 1983. Worked odd jobs and started family. Had a home child care business for 12 years and went back to school. Shortly thereafter, returned to the workforce in the Human Services field. Love it!! Future Plans: Find the time to finish my Associates in Criminal Justice and the other in Human Service (not easy working F-T and having 4 kids, one having a mentally challenging disability). Would like to go on and get my Bachelors in Social Work. Memorable Teachers: When I find my yearbook, I'll tell you...she stands out and has been an inspiration in my life, but cannot remember her name. Other alums I know about? Charles "Mike" Odom and Patricia Gill Odom, Margaret Pummer, and Lori Botti Kuehl. There are several people that I would like to chat with, including Jennie Hawkins Merrigan and Delores Reiber Manco. My husband, Ron Smith (class of 1978) and I have recently relocated from Frederick to Washington County with our four children and two cats. We sold our townhouse and bought a beautiful single family with land. I guess the dog comes next! Still working with young parents as a Family Advocate and will be taking more classes this summer p-t. My oldest turned 17 this month and my youngest just turned 6 today! That's it-3 down and 3 to go! This past weekend our 3rd child graduated college-my alma mata-Brigham Young University-and we only have 3 more to get through the college experience!! Yes, it can be survived and I have the t-shirt to prove it.....along with the gray hairs. Our only daughter graduated top of her school in elementary education. Her husband of almost two years graduated in exercise science. Now they are both out looking for jobs. Remember those days? We are hoping that the east coast will encourage them back home. Our third son is over in Russia serving our church as a missionary. He gets to call home Christmas and Mother's Day. Each week we receive email from him. He is doing very well with the language, the local customs and of course teaching the gospel to many there. The people there hunger for religion after many years of darkness due the government control. We anxiously await the arrival of our first grandson, second grandchild this July. We are thrilled to see our family grow with such beautiful babies-grandma bragging rights here! Where has the time gone? Seems like just yesterday we were all in the hallowed halls of Peary High School, either quickly trying to get past the crowds near the "smoking court" or making our way into the court. Walking to the beat of those new fancy electric typewriters on the 2nd floor or making the mad dash from the office to the foreign language rooms at the far back corner of the school. And who could forget those lovely lunches! Even now, I recall those times as I walk the halls of our local high school. I am a Special Education teacher for 9th and 10th grade high school students. This job either keeps me young or ages me rapidly-depends on the day. My youngest son, 10th grade, rides in with me each day, but quickly disappears into the student mass of 960-small school, huh? To all of you that are parents of high schoolers-stay calm and stay in touch with your son/daughter. They really do still need you. I do hold true to that saying about the best gifts we can give our children-"roots and wings". And I can attest that once they are in about their 2nd year of college-you are to them the person you always thought you were! And to see them walk across the stage to receive their diploma-tears come to your eyes-another great step in their life and yours-Well done Mom and Dad! Mrs. Percival helped and encouraged me at I time when I very much needed it. Several years ago I decided the time to thank her was long overdue. While she wasn^Òt easy to find, I was pleasantly surprised when she actually remembered me. Last fall my wife and I visited her. After leaving Peary, Joan worked as a writer. Following her husband's death she taught herself the rules and requirements of commerce and operated the family business for a number of years. Although Joan claims to be retired, she still has more irons in the fire than most of us. Her phone rings often concerning one involvement or another. And, the job of perfecting and decorating her house is an ongoing hobby. Joan is very much her own person, has diverse interests, and continues to appreciate good literature. I was surprised to learn that Mrs. Percival was only a few years older than we were. She said she intentionally acted and dressed older in the hope of maintaining authority over some of her more challenging students. Joan is more of a free spirit than what she portrayed in her role as a high school teacher. On the other hand, her husband was still in college, it was a relatively conservative time, Dr. Dunn was even more conservative, and she needed the job. In any case she is doing well, still looks the same, and is where she wants to be, doing what she wants to do. ********** From: Amani Emmanuel P. G. Yes, it's true-- after around 26 years in north Arlington, I've come back home to Maryland!! I bought a one bedroom unit in the Eastern Village co-housing building, located on Eastern Avenue at the southern end of Silver Spring. For those who don't know, co-housing is a condominium with more of a community flavor. (If you want a longer description, write me back at the above address for more details). I've never owned before, and hadn't moved in 19 years; the moving process itself was a nightmare. But as of this writing all of my stuff is out of the old place; I'm definitely living in Silver Spring now. Are any other alumni close to the downtown Silver Spring area? The new place is still full of boxes and bags, getting everything set up here will take time. But I just got a new computer (with a new flat screen monitor-- love it!!), and the DVD player and stereo are working fine. In other adventures, I attended the 2005 FOLK ALLIANCE conference in Montreal, Quebec last February. Heard lots of fantastic music, including some great bands from Quebec: La Boittine Souriante and La Vent du Nord and a great multi-cultural outfit from Sweden: The Ale Moller Band. Would like to get back to Montreal, very cosmopolitan/international city. Just saw English folk-rock pioneers Fairport Convention at The Birchmere (Alexandria, VA)-- they put on a great set! I've attended Fairport's annual festival in Oxfordshire, England four times and hope to go again this year. That event is not only the biggest gathering for fans of British folk/folk-rock, it's also an annual reunion of friends. Good restaurants in central/downtown Silver Spring: Bombay Gaylord (Indian), Panera Bread (sandwiches), CRISP & JUICY (Peruvian chicken). Thanks again to Bob Lau for all his work in keeping the M.S.O. going. I recommend that everyone who can make a donation to keep the web site and this newsletter going.
