FROM THE MELANSON FAMILY: (Gail 1976, Beth and Jeanne 1979) "We thank all of the Peary alumni who came to the memorial service [for brother Joe 1978], and those who contacted us and kept our family in their thoughts and prayers. However, I look forward to seeing the pictures posted on the MSO after the fact. It seems hard to believe it has been 25 years out of school. Next February (2005) I will celebrate my silver anniversary with the Federal Government. In fact, my first boss was Jerri Hogan (mom of Judi Hogan '81 and Steve Hogan '80) at the FDA. I used to think folks who had worked for the government at that time for 25 years were "old", now I am in that category and I am far from old. I am hoping to put in another 20 years in public service. A lot of my friends here in NJ have commented how organized I am, so I am putting my talents towards that in a new part-time business called "A Change of Scenery". I am an official professional organizer, just like you see on the TV shows. If anyone in the Rockville area would like to utilize my services...feel free to e-mail me @ RLRA4803@yahoo.com as I love to visit Rockville often. I have been in touch with Gay Laurienzo San Severino often this summer. Her oldest, Dominic, is attending Penn State at its Hershey campus. She has 8 out of 9 children in school as the baby, John Paul, will be 1 year old in August. She says she's done having children...but I don't know. I try to visit my family in Rockville often as Gary and I have an adorable and very smart (naturally) almost 2-1/2 year old nephew, Aidan, who attends the Goddard School in Frederick. My brother Jeffrey and his family will be moving into their new home in Urbana before school begins. My sister Jody is working very hard at the law firm where she is the administrator. Everyone have a great summer and enjoy the reunion. Occupation: Photographer Memorable Incidents: Senior class trip to the World's Fair in Montreal!!! Le Fantastique!!! We had a WILD time!!! A lot of bullying by the then "greasers" especially to the soon to be "hippies" of the school. Making lots of friends my senior year. "Whiteys" basement.... for those people who were in the know.... Having to shave off my mustache before I could graduate!!! Since High School: Got involved in the music business, 1st as a professional musician (Electric Bass & harmonica), then as a sound & recording engineer. Played in an original music/jazz band that played at the old Cellar Door to rave reviews...We just missed out on getting a record deal! :-( Became sound engineer, lighting, and stage manager at various top-notch venues like The Cellar Door, Blues Alley, Charlie's Georgetown, and the Childe Harold among others, eventually going on regional and then national tour with various bands. Managed and recorded local groups, live and in the studio. Got involved with Professional Photography at the same time. Am now a full-time photographer, doing mostly portrait and event work, photographing from Presidents of the United States to new-born babies. Also award winning travel and fine art photography, with past exhibits in Washington area galleries and shows. A photo restoration and digital imaging expert, I also teach and tutor Photography, Digital, and Adobe Photoshop to beginners as well as fellow Professionals. Currently Vice-President of the Professional Photographers Society of the Greater Washington area. Somewhere in there is sandwiched a couple of trips to Europe and the Caribbean. Love yoga and Tai-chi. No children. Future Plans: Develop and expand my photo-business. Return to Europe and travel to the Far East. Meet a lovely and intelligent woman and get married. Any of you out there up for 1st or second go-rounds? Memorable Teachers: I remember Sally Dunlap and her English class in my Junior year, and her Public Speaking class as a Senior. Inspired me get over my fears to "come out" and be comfortable speaking in front of people, which has served me well all my life. Thank you Sally!! Also all the electric and Electronics classes with Mr. (god I forgot his name-can anyone else remind me??) A great class and fun teacher. We has some "electrifying" experiences! (groan on bad puns...) Other alums I know about? Steve Vance I heard was or had been in the Philadelphia, Pa suburban area. John Fitzpatrick who had moved to southern California MANY years ago. Would love to find them both. Also Mike Hagerty, have no idea where he is. Also would like to locate Sharon Baird (she was a few classes later). Also a Cynthia (last name without yearbook escapes me). We spent a lot of time together at the Worlds Fair in Montreal. As I said above.. I'm single and looking to find that perfect complement to each other. Would also like to get in touch with others from my period in school including other class years that I used to know. Anyone remember, feel free to get in touch. Also would appreciate updates on social activities, picnics, and get togethers - I'd love to reconnect with those I knew and others. I lost my yearbook many years ago in a move, if anyone has a spare or one that I can borrow and look thru to refresh my memories of people and places?? &/or a roster of names, graduates and teachers?? Anyone Know what happened to and where I might contact Mrs. Dunlap? I had serious brain surgery in December 2002. I had what is called a "menengioma" which is a tumor of the lining of the brain. It was pressing on my brain stem and cerebellum. I was very fortunate to have a World renowned surgeon to operate on me. I've suffered almost no neurological deficits except for some loss of feeling on the right side of my face, and deafness with loud tinnitus (ringing and noise in the ear) in my right ear. Otherwise I'm pretty fully recovered. You can't even see the scar though I've got 3 pieces of titanium in my head! It certainly has changed my outlook and forced me to review my priorities in life. I know how lucky I am to be relatively healthy and alive. ********** From: Robert Perry (1980) Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 Subject: adoption My wife, Pam, and I recently adopted 2 children. We have our own website if you would like to see some of the animals that are looking for homes, at http://www.cara-adopt.org. If you go through CARA there is an adoption fee. You are all fantastic... I hope I speak for all '74 alumni in saying that the Odyssey was great, the food/beverages were great and seeing everyone was awesome. After all was said and done and I was headed back to North Carolina, I realized that I was meant to attend... Nothing can compare to revisitng old friends from years gone by...and rekindling old friendships. The last minute dress, shoes, and arrangements were well worth it... For those of you who knew of my dilemmia... my car was finally rescued at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning from the side of the road by AAA. As my luck would have it... it turned out that the guys who had just put 4 new tires on the car didn't tighten the lug nuts on the right front wheel and ... well ... it could have been disastrous had I attempted to go across the bridge into Virginia... I'm back safe and sound and looking so forward to the Ocean City Event on October 2, 2004. For those of you who have never attended... I strongly advise that you make an attempt to be there... it was a GREAT time last year... Again, thanks to all who organized it and also to those who convinced me to come along... Occupation: Partner/Creative Director for an ad agency, Spouse: Susan (C.P.A.), Children: Katherine Elizabeth 8, Jonathon Brian 6 Memorable Incidents: Gleefully misspending my youth with Tony Haberman (including attending a party in the equipment room on the roof of Peary.) Gleefully misspending the class trip to London/Paris with Bill Cokas, Tricia Haller and Patty Lee under the not-so-watchful eye of Mr. Clarke. Gleefully misspending work hours on one of my first jobs with Matt Beattie (including horrifying customers by fashioning homemade blood squibs and faking being shot) Unforgettable moments from the "glory days" of the Robert E. Peary Baseball Team! Darren 'Money Bags' Money breaking his jaw running into Ray Kiernan while hustling for a fly ball. (He still got a double in his next at bat before leaving the game.) Catcher Rob Hambright drilling me in the shoulder as I crouched down on the pitcher's mound during his particularly unsuccessful attempt to throw out a runner stealing second. Despite his claim that the incident was my fault for not ducking low enough, I'm sending him the bill for my recent shoulder surgery. Coach Dutch Hahn praying for divine intervention before a game during a loosing streak in the '83 season. Not long afterwards, team superstar Mark Mershon ran into the center field fence, leaving his brain so addled he then threw the ball off into left field thinking he was throwing it home... All proof that God has a sense of humor. The lovable batting practice antics of the greatly missed Mike Eagan, whose repertoire included such crowd pleasing routines as "Spit Shotput," "Booger Blow," and "How Much Will You Give Me To Eat This Worm?" Since High School: I received the praise and admiration of my educator mother by receiving multiple Dean's List honors from the Indiana University School of Business. Shortly afterward, she lashed out at me with unbridled contempt, icy distain and a variety of cutlery when I chose to make a career of misappropriating the English language in the lurid world of advertising. I regained some modicum of respect by working with Vice-Presidents, Senators, and a First Lady, plus a number of Redskin greats, Shaq O'Neil, sundry Coke billionaires, cheerleaders for the Lakers and Knicks (don't tell my lovely wife of 13 years), and even the genius who invented the concept of "sponsoring a needy child." Somewhere in this greatly rewarding process of selling my soul, I helped found and grow an award-winning advertising agency in a place I never thought I'd live or love: Chattanooga, Tennessee. Future Plans: Earning a spot in the Atlanta Braves' starting lineup. I haven't pitched since I was 18, and I strictly refused to throw a fastball over 65 mph in high school, so I figure I've still got a lotta juice left in the tank. Memorable Teachers: Mr. Clarke - He'd be arrested if today, but it sure was fun then. Dr. Fleeger - He was nearly as horrified by my career choice as my mother. Mr. Hill - Beloved by everyone, because he loved everyone... except me. It might have had something to do with that quiz when I wrote, "I don't give a sh-t" for an answer. Other alums I know about? I read somewhere that Tony Haberman had a gig as a sideshow act on the Lalapalooza Tour. The story goes that he was juggling malnourished cats under the stage name, "Senor Pantalones Locos." In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the whole reason the Lalapalooza tour was canceled this year was because the ASPCA finally shut them down. ********** From: Sheldon Kociol (1972) Date: Thu, 12 Aug 2004 Subject: Update Occupation: Software Engineer, Children: I have 3 sons and 2 step children. As you know hurricane Charley swept through that area causing tons of destruction. I spoke with Nannette and have found out that she, her husband and family are all ok. Their house was flooded and the roof was practically torn off. The house has so much water damage that there will be a lot of work needed to be done to the house. They were able to salvage some things. As of now, they are without electricity for about another 3-4 weeks and there are no phone lines working. I am the only person she's been able to reach by cell phone. She just wanted to let everybody know that they are doing ok. Now they're just waiting for the insurance company to get out there to evaluate the damage so that they can get started with the clean-up process. Well guys it is almost time for another year to pass and all of us are counting grandchildren and watching them get older. My grandson who is 13 is going to be playing football and grandma here is a little worried he might get hurt. Patty Toler Class of 83 is now residing with us along with her 14 year old daughter what a trip. We havent had "children" other than the cats in the house for at least 10 years. Hope all are well and keeping themselves busy. Now if anybody needs to update anything please do so. I am trying to keep my database up to date as far as addressess, marriages, etc are concerned. While you're reading this newsletter why not put a little submission in and maybe a little money to keep our MSO running. Well I guess that is all for now. Whoops almost forgot (you know CRS) if any of you know of any of the missing either our class for that matter all classes please let the respective onlines know. The onlines work very diligently to keep their address list current and without them some of the classes would not have their information up to date for the reunions and stuff. Also if any of you would like to get in touch with any other classmate let me know if they do not have email I will pass on any requests to them by mail and if they give permission I will forward their information via mail or email whichever. I know that classmates traveling from far distances need lead time to make arrangements, so at this point I'd say we're looking at a 35 and a fourth(?) event next year. Also-since the "Reunion Company" option no longer exists, I need help planning and organizing this next event. Anyone interested in helping out, please contact me via e-mail at: kenroseman@earthlink.net I would also like to know if anyone from the class of '69 is planning to attend "PEARYMANIA III" in Ocean City next month. Believe it or not, I've never been to Ocean City!! On a personal note, lots o' stuff going on. On August 21 I returned from a week and a half trip to England. The main point was to attend the Cropredy Music Festival, held near the village of Cropredy in Oxfordshire. The festival was held over three days: August 12-14 and featured great performances by several of the leading English folk/folk-rock groups: Oysterband, Ashley Hutchings & the Morris On Band, and Fairport Convention. After the festival I visited friends in Yorkshire and saw several locations where scenes from "Monty Python's Meaning of Life" were filmed. I'm doing lots of CD reviews for SING OUT! magazine, but also contributed to two special projects. Comix and fantasy fans will be familiar with the artwork of Charles Vess; he illustrated two issues of the "SANDMAN" series and has done many special projects. Vess has put together "The Book of Ballads," a collection of comic book styled adaptations of traditional folk ballads which will be published by TOR Books in November. I contributed "Discography Notes" to "The Book of Ballads," which included a list of in print recordings of the ballads and short bios of the performers who recorded them. I contributed an article on "English Folk-Rock: Expression of Non-Belligerent Nationalism" to a book titled: "Rock and Nationalism: An International Perspective." That book will be published late this year or early next year. My niece Elizabeth is now a junior in high school, my nephew Sam graduated last year. "Time marches on." I'm sure that a good number of folks reading this have dealt with this sort of problem; any help, words of support would be greatly appreciated. Both of my parents are now gone (my father died in 1995; my mother passed away in 2002). I have many of their books here in my small apartment and some furniture is presently in a storage facility. I couldn't bring myself to just give this stuff to a thrift shop or similar place, but now realize I probably can't keep it all. How have other folks dealt with this situation? Please send any thoughts to the above e-mail address. Thanks. Peace and best wishes to all alumni, their families, friends, and colleagues-Ken Roseman ('69). ********** From: Patrick Morrone (1979) Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2004 Subject: Update I found out about the website while surfing.
