OR, attend the book- signing event on April 18th at the Berman Academy (our old building - 13300 Arctic Ave - you know where it is!) from 1-4pm in the gym. To assist with the number of books and for an approximate headcount, there will be an intention/RSVP form posted on MSO soon. Please, if you plan on attending and purchasing a book, let us know with this online form when it is activated (soon). Like, hey, Mr. Hill needs to know just how many books to bring! Don't attend and walk away empty-handed! Additionally, the Berman Academy normally charges community groups for use of the building and facilities. Since "we" are the "original occupants," the fee has been waived. HOWEVER, donations for the Berman Academy will be accepted on-site during the event, and will be given to the Berman Academy as a thank-you and to show our gratitude for allowing us to be there. There will be light refreshments available, as well. Contact Gale Senseman Privette if you would like to assist, or would like to contribute to the refreshment "stand!" REMINDER: ALL timely information between the monthly newsletters will always be posted at pearyhs.org as soon as it is known. We cannot always distribute specific-class notices, so please visit the website often for the latest updates. THANK YOU THIS PAST MONTH: Anne Hardman (1965), John Baldwin (1977), Andy Harper (1967), Randy Hagen (1981), and all of our committed recurring supporters signed-on to the automated donation plan. If you wish to support the MSO, please visit the donations page at https://id267.securedata.net/pearyhs/donation.htm Bob Lau, Editor/Webmaster - blau@viawest.net The Midnight Sun Online - Robert E. Peary High School P.S. If you wish to reply or comment, PLEASE don't quote this entire newsletter back. Create a NEW e-mail to blau@viawest.net, and always include your grad year in the correspondence. If you don't sign with your name and grad year, it is tedious time to search the records just to ID you.... an e-mail from "smith3459@aol.com" (just an example) does not help us figure out who we're talking to! Again, if you have changes to your e-mail address or other contact information, please use the menu links at www.pearyhs.org - it'll go a lot faster by using the forms online and make it easier on us. Thanks! ********************************************************************* From: Elizabeth A. Hanley (Staff, 1960-1964) Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2004 Subject: Mrs. Richardson Just read about Pearl Richardson's death........She was one of the very best biology teachers that Peary ever had! She was also one of the nicest people on the faculty and was willing to take me, a "neophyte" teacher, under her wing back in 1960 when we all opened the doors (and they weren't even all on yet!) to Robert E. Peary High School under Dr. Dunn's able leadership. Pearl will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. She and I kept in touch up until this Christmas 2003 - that was her final Christmas card to me...(I left Peary after four rewarding years from 1960--'64). Occupation: Teen Court Coordinator for MC State's Attorney, Spouse: Jeff, Children: Chris - 15 - St John's College High School, Janie - 12 - Connelly School of the Holy Child Memorable Incidents: The sporting events; logging endless miles through the streets of Aspen Hill, not always sure what we were looking for. Since High School: Like alot of others - getting married, raising my kids, working and helping my husband with his business - watching time go by too fast. We own an auto repair shop in Rockville - Euro Werkes Imports (discount for Peary Grads!). I also run the Teen Court program for the State's Attorney's Office in Rockville. Love my job! My greatest joy comes from watching my kids grow and follow their dreams. Future Plans: Continue to work where I am until kids college bills are paid off. Then sell our business and retire somewhere where it's warmer than here with a house on the water. Memorable Teacher: Mr Hill - and anyone who had him knows why. I find myself leaving some of his famous quotes for my own kids! ********** From: Patricia Hurd Bryant (1970) Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2004 Subject: Grandson We have relocated to Miami, Fl. Here is the latest. SPIRIT AND OPPORTUNITY WORK!!! I am shouting for a reason. This is really important. Not only are spirit and opportunity now functioning on the surface of Mars, but several other JPL missions are doing extraordinary things that are lost in the shadow. The Spitzer space telescope is functioning and sending back amazing images. This telescope is like Hubble, but not getting its due recognition. And Stardust did its thing Jan. 2nd, the day before Spirit landed on Mars, but nobody noticed. It does something nearly as complex as the Mars landers: it flew through the coma (the bright head of a comet) of Wild 2 and collected comet dust. The samples will return to Earth, Jan. 2006. And, the science mission for Cassini has started. This spacecraft was launced in 1997 on its way to Saturn. Yes! The ringed planet. Perhaps the most beautiful object in the solar system. Cassini will go into orbit around Saturn in early July. After that, the same kind of amazing discoveries we saw from Galileo will be seen around Saturn. I am pumped. Working at JPL is a dream come true for me. ********** From: Susan Drew Weigl (1972) Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2004 Subject: Update I found out about the website from my brother, Cole Drew. Occupation: RN Case Manager, Spouse: Bob, Children: Drew 20yrs old, Grandchildren: Yikes...none yet! Memorable Incidents: Student Government, march on the Board of ED, Senior Girls' chorus line, all the plays put on by Mr. Gibbs Since High School: Graduated w/BSN from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; served in U.S. Army Nurse Corps (Major Retired Reserves); lived all over the USA - Alexandria, VA, Denver, CO, San Jose, CA, Ellicott City, MD, Austin, TX...just moved to Columbus, GA. Future Plans: Hoping to open a bed & breakfast/inn in our 95 year old house in the Historic District later this year; finish paying for the last 3 years of our son's 6 yr Master of Architecture/MBA program at Texas Tech University; travel, & enjoy life!! Memorable Teachers: The entire English & History departments - great teachers with a love of teaching & seeing their students become successful. Last year was truly a tough year for a lot of reasons, but most sadly, my dear mother Juliet Drew, died in April 2003 at the age of 85...she will be missed by many. ********** From: Brian Arshawsky (1976) Date: Fri, 30 Jan 2004 Subject: Update I thought I would give you an update on a few items! In a 3 month period in 2001, my Dad (Frank) had a stroke, I bought a house, and lost my job! Sound stressful? In a strange way, it gave me time to work with my sister (Fredyne '73, to bring my father home from Holy Cross Rehabilitation Center, and try to save him. He had given up, and Medicare refused to help pay for him after 1 month. Against the Doctor's advice, we brought him home and hired private care ($3,000 a month) to try to rehabilitate him. I also went back to school for a year to try to pick up as many computer classes as possible to start my own repair and consulting business. By coincidence, I ran into friend and classmate Jeff Kushner '76. He recommended that I meet with his brother Stuart '74, who has had a successful computer repair and consulting business since 1986. Both brothers have stories written about them on the Peary Web Page about their success! Jeff is owner and president of Plants Alive! in Silver Spring, Maryland. Stuart hired me as a network consultant, for his company, Progressive Office. I have worked for him for over a year serving his many clients in the Washington Metropolitan area. Stuart has a unique and personal way of doing business. If you call Progressive Office, you never get voice mail! (One thing you do not hear is, "We are experiencing unusually high call volume. Your wait time is over 45 minutes!"). There is always somebody there during business hours to talk to our clients real time! I thank the Kushner brothers for hooking me up! I really enjoy troubleshooting computer and network related problems. To solve a tough problem, or set up a home or business with the proper computers, network equipment, printers, etc. is a great way to make a living and satisfy clients. As a token of my appreciation, and a way to meet with other alumni, I would be glad to help fellow alumni with basic computer related questions for free. If you have a computer related question, call Brian at Progressive Office at 202-462-4290. I will also answer email at brian@progoffice.com. I will give any alumni a free hour of advice. If you require more comprehensive help, ask Stuart for a discounted Robert E. Peary rate for services! Stuart's email is skushner@progoffice.com. We also have a pretty cool web site www.progressiveoffice.com. We just took my father, Frank, for his check up. The doctors could not believe what they found. My father 83, has made some real improvement. His heart is stronger, and he now can turn pages with a hand that had been totally paralyzed! A word of advice for all alumni. If your parents do not have long term health insurance, look into a policy! The cost of custodial care can send you into bankruptcy. Regards to my classmates from the class of 1976, and all other alumni! Future Plans: Continue raising well rounded, godly children. Continue to build my business to the point where I'm working more on my business instead of in my business. We purchased a beach house last year, I'm looking to spend more time away. Memorable Teachers: Mr. Gardner (Geometry)- Don't remember a darn thing about Geometry, but I remember once a month having McDonalds egg McMuffins, hashbrowns and coffee for the whole class. Mrs. Hale- seemed to be one of the few teachers who really appreciated and related to the kids who were average students with a good sense of humor, who didn't take life so seriously. I could be wrong, but that was my perception. Other alums I know about? I scanned through the list of missing people, there are quite a few I have sold homes to. ********** From: Nancy Smith DeVanney (1973) Date: Thu, 5 Feb 2004 Subject: Reunion I wanted to comment on our reunion this past July. I had not been back to Rockville in almost 30 years. It was a shock to see how everything has changed. I had no idea how to locate any of the old places I knew without my husband's navigation system in his car. When arriving at the reunion I had forgotten how pretty the Manor was. I was very nervous not knowing what to except from a reunion since this was my first. I was pleasantly surprised at how welcomed I felt. Thank God for those lovely name tags I wouldn't reconize anyone without them. well I did reconize a few. It was a blast having people come up to each other & checking out the tags before the phrase "oh I remember you". My only regret was not being able to make the fun the night before. Trying to get in 30 years of catch up with everyone does take time. After graduation my family moved to PA & I went to school in Radford VA. That's where I met my husband of 26.5 years. He got involved in the coal industry as a geologist/consultant so we lived where the coal was, West by God Virgina. As luck would have it we finally migrated north & have lived in the Pittsburgh area since 1983. He now has two businesses dealing with the testing & consulting of the coal & coke industry. We have two grown children, one a politician, a republican no less, & an Art teacher. Raising them was like growing up with Alex P. Keaton & his sister Mallory. Of course our pride & joy is our grandson Aiden, a little blonde blue eyed cutie who is 14 mos. I have had the opportunity to travel thru Europe while I was working selling advertising, worked formy husband in the lab & now I'm selling chemicals, & lab equipment for Fisher Scientific. I just wanted to thank everyone involved in setting up & carrying off such a wonderful party. It was great touching base with friends I have known since grade school. Let's all try to stay in touch one way or another. Life is too short enjoy the all moments. There are several items around my own wood shop which revive a past thought-my 1949 Delta table saw for one,an old school wood working class model. But recently I picked up a photo book on Indian Motor cycles-an excellent photo history from the beginning to the current bikes. That book brought back the memory of Mr.Belher when he had a scource to buy the old WW2 bikes from the military-all were packed in grease and in 55 gallon drums. He offered them for sale to certain students and I was so upset my parents would'nt allow me to buy one. I often think of those barreled bikes and Mr.Belcher. I was'nt a really great student when at Peary-but it always amazes me how what I may be doing today 30 odd some years later associates with teachers from those good old days. Like Mr.Belcher and his shop class. Funny-I thought wood shop was a waste of time-and now I have one of my own,I build caskets for those who can't afford one, giving them to families at no charge. And not only was Mr.Belcher an influence (although I did'nt see it then-clearly I see it now) but Mr.Hills class and his daily quotes on chalk board-wow,he has no idea how much I really did absorb. Well...just wanted to say that. ********** From: Eileen Brown Carter (1965) Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2004 Subject: Donations Hey class it is tax time again and as usual everybody running around looking for those donations and tax write offs, but at the same time you can always donate to keep our spirit and school alive with a little bit of money to MSO. I'm currently the Senior ESD control engineer at JPL in Pasadena, California, and can also be e-mailed at roger.w.welker@jpl.nasa.gov The diagnosis was very difficult. Turns out I suffer from malabsorption syndrome (the inability of the body to absorb vitamin B12 through the digestive tract). This disease is also known as pernicious anemia, the same disease that took the life of one Admiral Robert E. Peary. I was fortunately diagnosed early enough that many of my symptoms, including severe anemia, weight loss and most dreadfully, complete loss of feeling from my hands to my shoulders and from my feet to my hips. I take vitamin B12 injection every month and will do so for the rest of my life. Too bad the cure for this disease was not known in Peary's time, or the man would have certainly lived a great deal longer.   Isn't that a bit of irony? I went to the high school honoring a man who had the same disease I suffer from today. I recently expanded my consulting business by the addition of two new associates.
