SUDS AND SUN 2004: The title of this annual multi-class event has changed to "PEARYMANIA III - Alumni Gone Wild!" Please note that due to logistical complications in Ocean City on the previously-scheduled date, this year's event has been rescheduled for Saturday October 2, 2004. Same place - Seacrets. Many of you already had your flight reservations booked... however, the reason for this change was not anticipated (it was discovered later that practically ALL accomodations in Ocean City were filled on the previous date due to an annual O.C. event). Last year's hotel suggestions and information about Seacrets are still posted... linked from the main page of MSO (will take you to the Class of 1968 info area). Last year's photos are there, too. New activities planned/added this year, too - you'll have to be there to actually see it for your own eyes (and participate, if you dare). REMINDER: "Timely" announcements and notices between the monthly newsletters are posted at www.pearyhs.org. Updates to class info/news and classmates are updated online several times daily. We cannot always distribute class-specific notices (though we try to when warranted). AOL USERS: The AOL service tends to reject distributions sent to its users (MSO is not the only entity that is encountering this). You may not even be receiving this newsletter. This newsletter may be sitting in your AOL "spam" folder. Just for the record. We will continue to send to those of you with AOL addresses, with no guarantee you're going to receive it. All newsletters are archived on MSO. Please understand that it is impractical for MSO to send 4,300+ individual e-mails. All, please check your alternate e-mail addresses as well - these are not regularly followed-up on since the newsletter and class mailings go to your "primary" listing. Thus, your alt/secondary e-mail addresses that on-record and displayed on the secure server may need updating. THANK YOU: Our supporters this past month... Mary Beth Wheeler (1974), Brian Wentworth (1971), Sandy Swarr Crawford (1974), Christina Swift Dodd (1979), Andy Harper (1967), Lynda Hench Donaldson (1966), and all those who are signed-on to the recurring/pledge donation plan. Visit the secure page at https://id3416.securedata.net/pearyhs/donation.htm for info on how to support the MSO, and thanks for your consideration! BUSINESS TO BENEFIT MSO: Occasionally, this project considers and presents some offers made by alumni-owned businesses that will directly benefit the MSO while additionally offering a discount to all Peary alumni (e.g. the Gustafson lithos of Camden Yards inaugural photo). Laura Barish (1978) is doing so from now through August with one of her endeavors. Thank you, Laura! The details from Laura... Dear fellow alumni. I have started an online jewelry company and part of the standard practice of this new business is tithing 10% of the gross receipts to a sponsored organization. To launch both the company and the tithing I have been working with Bob Lau so that MSO will be the tithing recipient for the month of August. The official launch of the company and the site is August 1st. Bob has given all of us an incredible gift through his hard work and selfless efforts to keep the spirit of Peary High School alive. If you are a jewelry fan, as I am, please take a look at what we have to offer. Treat yourself or your loved one to a beautiful treasure; and remember, 10% of everything you buy goes to MSO. Visit us at http://www.bljewels.com. During the month of August all Peary Alumni receive 10% off your purchase. When you order please provide your graduation year. If you're not a jewelry fan and choose not to shop, perhaps you'll consider logging onto the MSO site to make a donation. Thanks for your consideration. Have a joyous and abundant year. Laura Barish - barishl@yahoo.com - Class of 1978 PEARY/MSO AUGUST NOTE: There may be a period in August when items won't be updated online daily as you're used to. Even we have to take a break sometimes! Also August, the MSO celebrates its 8th Anniversary. Have a good summer, Bob Lau, Editor/Webmaster - blau@viawest.net The Midnight Sun Online - Robert E. Peary High School P.S. If there's anybody out there who subscribes to the Journal of the American Veterinary Association and won't be keeping their current issue, I understand my "mug" is in there associated with an article about the challenges with using drugs in exotic species. I think I'm posed next to a bird cage or with a parakeet in my scrubs. Let me know if you won't be keeping your issue - I'd like to have a copy or two of the journal/article. Thanks! -- Bob Lau - blau@viawest.net P.P.S. If you wish to reply or comment, please don't quote the entire newsletter back. Create a new e-mail to blau@viawest.net. Always include your grad year in the correspondence. Changes of individual information should be submitted using the forms online - linked from the main menu - this will ensure that the updates go to the correct class. If you're not receiving any anticipated class mailings, maybe you moved and need to update your class for its records? It's easy - the most utilized forms are "Update E-mail Address" and "Sign-up/Update" (for everything else... mailing address, phone numbers, job changes, etc.). If you have an article for the newsletter, click "Submit an Article." All there for your use, and pretty simple! My EX-common law husband has decided that he liked the idea of being with a married woman. I'm pretty sure that this editorial will be edited for content by Bob Lau but I just feel it needs to be said (its therapeutic according to my therapist - nope not ashamed to admit that I see one). Well, I'm back home now, starting over, again, with my daughter. She seems happy, which is good, and I'm working to save money all over again in order to get back into a place of my own and regain my identity as well as my independence (again). Anyway, I'm still working at the same job plus doing the collectibles business on the side so its not like I'm not monetarily independent, I just dont make enough to get an apartment or even a down payment on a small house at the moment. I'm sorry if this update is grimer than most, guess its because this is probably the lowest my life has ever gone. For anyone who falls in love, be careful of your money. Make sure, regardless of if a marriage is the end result of the relationship or not, that you get a pre-nup signed by both parties, that way, you won't lose everything like I did. Until we see each other again, class of 1983, Patty Leigh Toler Class of 1983 Rockville, Maryland [Editor Note: This submission "was" edited for content] ********** From: Robert Kibler (1974) Date: Mon, 5 Jul 2004 Subject: Update Occupation: Professor of English and Humanities, Significant Other: Alexandra Deufel (Biologist and Functional Morphologist), Children: Bethany Anne Kibler 24 Memorable Incident: The High School Class trip to Daytona Beach--allowed people from a variety of exclusive cliques to mingle for the first time and to surprisingly get to know one another. Since High School: Bummed around Aspen Hill for a few years painting and landscaping, then went to Montgomery College and on to St Mary's College of Maryland. Life changing engagement with creativity and learning. Left college, however to marry, reproduce, and join military, ending up in Air Force Special Operations units working out of 82nd Airborne Division NC and 1/75th Ranger Battalion GA. Returned to University of Maryland for degrees in English, and then on to University of Minnesota for PhD in English Literature and Humanities. Specialties in Modern International Literatures and Medieval European literature, with related emphases in the literature of Latin Antiquity and of Classical China. Taught Humanities at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Academia Sinica) in Beijing and began appointments in English and Humanities in North Dakota, first at Valley City State University, and now at Minot State University. I just got back from taking one student group to Italy and Greece, followed by another to Tanzania, to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, followed by safari in the Serengeti. In Tanzania, we all made it to the top of that wretched mountain, and had high adventure in the Serengeti, tented and surrounded by roaming lions each night. Next year, another Greece and Rome trip, followed by a more exotic one to riverboat down the Amazon, followed by a 6 day hike through the jungle to Macchu Pichu, lost city of the Incas. The year after, Vietnam. Want to come? Future Plans: I hope to turn from writing scholarly articles in the next year or two to working on books instead. Keep moving forward through life. See what happens. Memorable Teacher: I guess in Junior High School, it was Miss Fox who really helped many students, including me. She encouraged me to extend my thoughts concerning our readings, and since I was a wandering and wayward teen, made sure that I made it to school by picking me up in the morning and driving me in, along with others on occasion such as John Bruner and Maureen Pierce. Wondering if anyone knows where Mike Dewes is hanging his hat these days. Hope to see a bunch of people at the reunion.
