************************************************************ MIDNIGHT SUN ONLINE The Online Newsletter for Robert E. Peary High School Alumni Volume 8, Number 10 May 2004 MSO WEBSITE - http://www.pearyhs.org ************************************************************ INTRODUCTION Greetings Huskies, In this issue: Intro/reunion/events items (long this time!), followed by Alumni articles and updates, "Quick-Takes" updates, and condolences. WAYNE FLEEGER (Peary English teacher ~late 70s): We're sad to learn that Dr. Fleeger suffered a heart attack and passed away at his home the evening of June 1. Our condolences to the Fleeger family. Dr. Fleeger served as principal at Richard Montgomery HS for a while after Peary, and more recently with the Office of School Performance and Accountability at the Hungerford Drive Carver facility. He has a daughter serving in Iraq as a helicopter pilot and had been worried about her. From Faith Katz Fischel (1983)... "He touched a lot of our hearts with his kindness and guidance. He will certainly be missed by Peary Alumni as well as current colleagues and friends." Thank you to all of the MCPS employees, and others, who informed MSO of this sad news the morning of June 2. Further information regarding any arrangements will be posted on the MSO website as soon as it is known. RACE FOR THE CURE: Join Beth Leimbach Swanson (1966), multiple breast cancer survivor, on Saturday, June 5 for the 2004 Komen National Race for the Cure by becoming a member of her team "Bosom Buddies." A secure informational and support/donation site is available at http://www.kintera.org/faf/r.asp?t=4&i=41869&u=41869-42826740&e=81271999 JOHN PHILBIN (1975): Many of you know John... who is the former Redskins strength coach, on (and coached) the US Olympic Bobsled team in the 80s, and more recently, the conditioning coach for Fernando Vargas and also worked with Lennox Lewis. We've found out that John's written a new book, "High Intensity Training" - maybe good reading for all alums' future Olympians! John will be opening a training center this August on Shady Grove Road behind Home Depot. John can be reached at jcphilbin@aol.com, and book information may be viewed at http://www.humankinetics.com/products/showproduct.cfm?isbn=0736048200 CONGRATS 1982 ALUMS: 1) Deborah Belland Bergeron was voted Employee of the Year at Androscoggin Valley Hospital, in Berlin NH. 2) Confirmed... Paula Marshall was married in Hollywood, CA to actor Danny Nucci, who she co-starred with in "That Old Feeling" and "Snoops." It is the second marriage for both. Paula appeared in the Steve Martin movie "Cheaper By The Dozen" last year. Upcoming TV sitcom, possible, called "Cooking Lessons" - Happy B'day, Paula (June 12)! RECONNECTING: As you may be aware, MSO has been partially responsible for 4 "Peary" weddings since it's been around (1996). A heads-up... for those of you old enough (HA), and receive the AARP Magazine, Terry Cohea and Jeff Lindblad (both 1971) will be one of the couples featured in the Sept-Oct issue in an article titled "Reconnecting with Lost Love." AARP found out about them though the MSO website and got a hold of them for the interview/story of how they reconnected. So, don't toss your copies before you get to read it! I recently received my May 2004 "Washingtonian" magazine and was very pleased to discover a photograph of Dr. Dunn on page 63! He is pictured and quoted in "Washingtonian" because he was the Montgomery County school official charged with integrating MCPS in the mid-1950's. Today, May 17, 2004, is the fiftieth anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, which struck down the legality of segregated education. I love the study of history, although it may be ugly at times. However, I was pleasantly surprised and proud to discover that Dr. Dunn played such an important part in this sequence of events. Board of Education On May 3, 2004, Mr. Warrick Hill, former Math Teacher at Peary High School spoke before an audience of over 150 Montgomery County Public School staff in the school district's Office of Staff Development. Several alumni of Peary work in the MCPS Office of Staff Development and heard Mr. Hill speak about his experiences and his book, Before Us Lies the Timber: Jackie Maslona Simpson, '65, Terry Dilworth Mathers, '69, Karla Berg Walker, '72, and Leslie Johnson McIntyre, '77, were present for Mr. Hill's speech. Mr. Hill gave an inspiring personal account of growing up in the dual, segregated Montgomery County Public School System. Mr. Hill provided background on Brown vs. Board of Education and spoke about his own education in MCPS, his graduation from Morgan State College, his first teaching job in Calvert County, MD, and his 22 year career at Peary HS. Mr. Hill has written about the segregated MCPS school system in his book: Before Us Lies the Timber (2003). The book also describes segregation in other Maryland Counties and provides information about Brown Vs. Board of Education. Peary students will enjoy reading about other Peary staff in Mr. Hill's book: Mabel Thomas, Carrie Luck, and Marylah Clark. The book has many photographs and is an excellent source of information about education in our county, state, and country. This year we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Brown Vs. Board of Education with the knowledge that we have come along way, but there is still much to do to close the gap in student achievement. My youngest brother works at an ad agency, and one of his clients (WC and AN Miller, a real estate firm) wanted to put in a "thank you" also. What my brother came up with is something that brought tears to my family's eyes and a huge lump in each of our throats. The ad itself is 2/3 page bordered in black. The entire background is obviously an old old photo - black and white and grainy. It is a photo of a young soldier, bundled against the cold, taken in the Herken Forest. The copy superimposed over the area that is just snow-covered ground and trees reads as follows: We see your actions as noble and heroic, You say you were, "Just doing our job." You rescured the world from an undeniable evil. Still you say, "Just doing our job." After the war, you sought no celebration, no international recognition. You rolled up your sleeves and rebuilt a nation. "Just doing our job." For all of your noble acts, your heroic deeds, your selfless nature. For just doing your job, We say, "Thank you." If you haven't guessed, the soldier is our father, Frank, at age 22. He had survived landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day, and would obviously survive the rest of the war. As kids, when we would tell him how proud of him we were for having served his country and his family, he always said "Just doing my job." As we celebrate this Memorial Day, let's remember what the day is really about. Thank each and every veteran you know or just come across for "Just doing their job." May you all have a peaceful, safe holiday. Beth (Leimbach) Swanson PS: for those who may still have the magazine, the ad appears on page 53. The article itself is also very interesting. [An image of this ad is posted on the MSO main page - other known Leimbach siblings are Annamarie (1976), and brother Mike. Mr. Leimbach resides in Silver Spring, and served with the "Big Red 1"] ********** From: Gary Rosenthal (1974) Date: Wed, 2 Jun 2004 Subject: Update My son Evan will be a senior at Sherwood High School and was just named sports editor of the school paper.
