During our years at Peary, she was also the "other mother" to many, Jan Zlotnick (1973), Lenny Chornock (1975), and Wendy Chornock Streight (1980) and to myself to name a few. She will be missed, but never forgotten as "we will find a way or make one." Fran, we all loved you!" We are sad to inform you that Mrs. Evelyn Muranaka passed away on Monday August 4th. Mrs. Muranaka was the mom of Lori Muranaka Smith (1972), Pete (1973), and Todd (1975). All were with her, including grand & great grandchildren. If you would like to support this project, please link to: https://id3416.securedata.net/pearyhs/donation.htm when you have a chance ... thanks in-advance for your consideraton! All donations, from individuals or groups/organizations/class reunions are voluntary. Additionally, there is no "charge" or "deals made" for MSO to accept or decline "offers" of support or splitting of event proceeds to access the MSO website or to post Peary Alumni-related events and activities in the newsletter or online at the website. "Voluntary" means "voluntary" - donate as you wish, or not. MSO is not in the position to accept or decline "offers" or deal in-trade or for publicity in return for financial support. It is up to the individual or group or graduating class whether it/they wish to support MSO. We cannot decide "for" you, so please do not propose deals or offers to MSO. "Voluntary" is just that - you decide. Please do not ask MSO to make "deals" or offer them. Also, on that note, please do NOT submit "articles" that are obvious solicitations and ads for your business..... the MSO is strictly a project to keep people and classes in-touch, re-acquaint, and let people know what classmates are up to. It is NOT a classified ad resource. MY MOM/KNOWN PLEA/THANK-YOU: As you may be aware from the last newsletter, my mom, who many of you know, has had her previously-in- remission lung cancer come back, and it's now into her brain. (If any of you sports-oriented folks out there probably know, it is the same situation as Barry Bonds' dad, who just passed away. I wish to extend a special THANK-YOU to Gale Senseman Privette (1966) and Ron McGee (1976) for distributing a notice on my behalf to the 24 class online coordinators, who may have, in-turn, distributed the notice to all of their respective classmates. A special thank-you to Neal Pizzano, as well, who forwarded the notice to my class, 1976, and on behalf of 1977 (Sandy Van Dusen was out of the country at the time). I do not know if this notice was sent to the Faculty/Staff, as there is no current coordinator for our alumni staff. The results/your responses to this plea have enabled me to make it back to Maryland and are continuing to help me alleviate the numerous additional expenses to be away from my home and company in Nevada. Both Gale and Ron knew I would have said "no," had they asked me beforehand. Those of you who have responded - I am still speechless after 4 weeks of what has occured with your responses and support. PLEASE, forgive me for not acknowledging all of the received e-mails and postal mail cards and letters and personal financial support - I WILL reply to each and every one of you who responded to the notice sent by Ron and Gale to each class's coordinator. Thank you for your understanding - I'm taking each day at a time - I feel lucky I am finding the time in-between to keep MSO up-to-date as I'm able, and to get this newsletter out. If you did not receive the notice from your online class coordinator, have no idea what I'm writing about here, and would like a copy of it, please contact your respective online coordinator and I'm sure he/she will forward it to you, OR just e-mail 1966's Gale Senseman Privette (gale7@juno.com) or 1976's Ron McGee (rp.mcgee@verizon.net) for a copy of this effort if you did not receive it. Your prayers and support at this time are greatly appreciated, Bob Lau, Editor/Webmaster The Midnight Sun Online P.S. If you wish to reply or comment, please don't quote this entire newsletter back to us - create a new e-mail to blau@viawest.net, and always include your grad year in the correspondence. If you have changes to your e-mail address or other contact information, please use the main menu links at www.pearyhs.org - it'll go a lot faster and make it easier on us. If you have an article, an update, a change of mailing address - please use the links on the website, rather than direct e-mails if you would. She had a brain tumor (cancerous) removed six weeks prior to her death. Her oncologist found cancer in the lungs and lymph nodes while she was receiving radiation for the brain tumor. Our family was fearing a long, torturous drawn out demise for her. Thankfully, she did not have to experience that end. She was stricken with blood clots in her legs which eventually traveled to her lungs. She experienced no noticeable pain or discomfort and simply went to sleep. She was surrounded by myself, my father and numerous cousins and her favorite niece at the time of her passing. As for myself, I am happily married to Karen (Kaufman) Repas, a non-Pearyite. We have two sons-Terry age 37 who lives in Mobile, Al. and Tony age 35 who resides in Maitland , FL. We have 5 grandchildren-- 3 boys and 2 girls. I do believe it was the best reunion yet, thank you Terri and all of you that put the event together. I was so glad to see many people I haven't seen since graduation and many of you I get to see every 5 years. The pictures are great, you all need to check out Bill's site on Yahoo. Muldoon's was great fun, a little too much fun and I have the bruises to show for it. I'm not used to beating myself with the tamberine. Allen was greatful that everyone remembered him and brought the reunion to him since he couldn't be there. I can't wait for 5 more years to do it all over again. I can wait though, to be 5 more years older, UG. If you guys plan on doing something next year, I will be there. If any of you are ever in the Outerbank, please look me up. I would love to see you. On Sept 1 (Labor Day) we will be placing our order for Chesapeake Bay crabs to be flown out to Colorado for the Peary High West Crab Feast on Sat, Sept 6. If you plan on coming but haven't given us your order yet, please do so NOW. All the details are linked to the PearyHS.org home page. Click, order, pay, then come crack crabs with us up against the Rocky Mountain foothills in Boulder. We'd hate for you to miss out! ********** From: Christine Waters Smith (1980) Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2003 Subject: autism I was reading Bevy Ponton Kerns letter [MSO newsletter, April 2003] about the number of incidents of cancer patients that are among the Peary alumni. It is ironic. I wonder if anyone else has had a child or grandchild diagnosed with autism. My oldest has been diagnosed and the cause is unknown. It can be truly devastating to the parents since the delays don't start to appear until toddler age. Puberty can onset intense self-abusive behavior. Ronnie is 15 now and the behaviors are somewhat better. I would like to chat with anyone that has experienced the same issues. ********** From: Vicki Kendall Emmert (1976) Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2003 Subject: Update I found out about the website from Classmates chat board. Occupation: Homemaker / PetsMart associate (PT), Spouse: Steven, Children: I'm StepMom to Jacob (24) and Stephanie (21) whom I helped raise. StepMom also to their older sister, Harmony (27), and StepGrandMa to Ashley Marie our first grandchild. Grandchildren: Ashley Marie (1) Memorable Incidents: When the artists of the class of '76 finally got their sh-- together and won the Hall Decorating Contest. I was one of them. The trip we took to Italy & Germany over Spring Break with Mr. Clark. Cruising around on Friday or Saturday night in somebody's fixed-up Street Rod, recreating our own version of American Graffitti. Since High School: I graduated from Southeastern Academy with a diploma in Fashion Merchandising. I still have my second car (a 1966 Chevy II SS) which is pretty close to being fully restored. I worked for Vitro Corporation in the Accounts Payable Dept for 5 or so years. Since 1987, I've been pretty active in Biblical Research and taking classes. In 1992 I bought a 3/4 ton Dodge 4x4 Power Ram pick-up with lift kit. What was I thinking? The guy I was dating talked me into test driving it, and I fell in love (with the truck!) I was into country music back then; learned all the boot-scootin' two-steppin' dances that were the craze in the country music bars. Then in 1993-94 I volunteered for an out-reach program for 10 months and was sent to Oklahoma City, OK. I fit right in there with my love for country music, my cowboy hat, and my pick-up truck. When that was over, I returned home to Iris Street thinking I'd be staying put for a while, but I ended up getting engaged, to a man who lived in Indiana! So, I sold my house, and packed my pick-up, and moved to Indiana. We ran a household fellowship for a while, raised two teenagers together, and now we are empty-nesters. We just got back home from a visit to Maryland's Eastern Shore (Aug 11-18, 2003). That's where my relatives are from. We drove through the old neighborhood and it still looks pretty good. Future Plans: It would be nice to get in contact with some of my old friends from school days even if it's only by e-mail. However, I have reservations about posting an e-mail address. Memorable Teachers: Mr. Clark - because he made learning Social Studies fun and he was funny. Mrs. Glass - I really enjoyed my art class. Mr. Boteler - I enjoyed his class Novels, Plays, and Movies. I wished it was longer because I had a secret crush on him. ********** From: Hank Heller (1983) Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2003 Subject: Sorry I missed #20 Hello to my classmates and old friends.
