From:
Guy Goodwin <ggandsg@QuixNet.net>
(1965) I
regret to report the passing of my father, Donald W. Goodwin, on August 9th,
at the age of 77. He had been
suffering from a variety of ills for many years, always bearing the
weakness of his body with an unbending spirit, with dignity, and with good
humor. After a few days in the hospital with a new complaint, he
passed quietly after surgery to relieve its symptoms - it was all just too
much for him. My Mom, who is
now 80, is doing better than might be expected after losing her partner of
nearly 56 years. My two
brothers and my two sons were all able to be with her when the time came. Regards
to all, From:
Jan Zlotnick <jan@thezlotnickgroup.com>
(1973) Brother
of Dorann ‘71 (who is married to Chuck Penney ‘71) and Brian
(Rockville ‘85); married to Melanie Kartzman (Springfield, NJ); sons:
Tyler, 17, and Jared, 19, sophomore at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Keep
in Touch with: John McGovern (Peary/Wheaton ‘73). Love
seeing what people are up to, don’t you? It’s pretty amazing stuff,
like a great hit on a wonderful, FDA-approved drug that transports you
instantly to a time and place where you felt somehow safer, warmer, loved,
and pumped up to take on the world. When
my father died in 2000, we had services in Maryland and stayed at Dorann
and Chuck’s in Olney/Gaithersburg, and I went for a drive with my son
Jared to visit Peary. It was closed, but we peered through the doorways to
see the hallways that brought back visions of, well, of us, our class,
jeans, miniskirts (remember Lynn Studley and her mini skirts which were
actually her father’s dress shirts? It didn’t do me any good in that
math class we shared, which is why I remember Lynn but could never help my
kids with their algebra homework), sounds of feet clicking and sliding and
screeching to classes, bells going off, and then, again, the quiet of the
hallways. We
walked on the football field, where the mast was, where we kicked some
serious butt (and got some serious butt kicked), and then down to the old
baseball field and football/soccer practice fields where I told Jared
about the time I was leading the football team in warm-ups and as I was
facing the opposite direction of the rest of the team, I was casually
checking out what I thought was a remote control toy plane flying toward
us in the sky, until it got bigger and bigger as it got closer and closer.
I remember yelling to one of the coaches and the team, something like
“There’s a plane landing on our field!” and we all ran off to the
sides in disbelief. The small one- or two-passenger, in avoiding wiping
out the Peary football team, veered right and slammed into some jungle-gym
equipment near the tennis courts. It’s hard to remember particular
practices, let alone games, from back then, but it call came back to me
looking on that valley of green down those wood logs for steps that winded
down from the main campus. Or
the time the baseball team was practicing and we had one of those early
arm-snapping baseball-pitching machines spitting out 80mph fastballs to
batters, and one of the batters popped up a ball sky high directly between
the pitcher’s mound and home plate, where I promptly raced to and
planted myself, looking up, fixated on the ball that seems now in memory
to be falling in slow motion to my open mitt...while Coach Bill Williams,
in disbelief, saw that I was, duh, in the direct line of a fastball about
30 feet from various strategic points of my body that weren’t made to
absorb tightly bound and red-stitched leather at point blank impact....the
ball whizzed by my right nipple as I recall (that nipple has been forever
traumatized)...and Coach Williams, in shock, calmed himself down by
stuffing cigarettes into every facial orifice, one in each ear, nostril,
and five in his mouth, unlighted because he was trying to quit. I think he
lit one up at some point that day or night. ...Or
the time during “doubles” for football in August when Danny and David
Cannon and I were walking, from Wheaton (mall? shopping center?) because
their car had died and we were shooting the sh-t, telling stories about
junior high school, theirs from Parkland, mine from Wood, and they told me
in detail about a certain bicycle they escaped on after being caught
skipping Parkland and trespassing at Earle B., and how they ditched that
sweet 3-speed English Racer by pushing it over a cliff and excitedly
watching it crash and shatter into amazing big and little pieces in a
gully below somewhere in the woods behind Peary....yes, MY 3-speed English
Racer, on which I was to win my wager with John McGovern and Dave Baker,
that I could ride to and from school, rain or shine, for 100 days...I
remember chasing Danny and David, laughing our guts out, all the way back
to Peary for the afternoon practice. Lots
of memories that still stay with me, and now, thanks to the Midnight Sun
Online still rising and setting online for us holders of the Arctic flame,
many more stirred up. Thanks. regards, jan@thezlotnickgroup.com,

Buck, a Peary graduate from 1981, has been diagnosed with liver and colon
cancer. The cancer is stage 4
and at this point, John has run out of options. I
just returned from visiting him and he is not doing well.
He is expected to live only a few more weeks. John
has a four-year-old daughter and an eight-year-old son.
We are in the process of setting up a college education account to
help them. I will keep you
posted on how to contribute. In
the interim, please keep John and his wife and kids in your prayers. It is
a very difficult time for all of them. From:

Business Person Spouse: Linda Polk, Children: Allison (Step) 21, Lara 14,
John III 13, Grandchildren: Leah Rain 10 months Since
High School: Remarried in 1988, two kids (Lara and Johnny). My wife and I
are business people. I am co-owner of Information Control in Gaithersburg
(software design, support, IT services in the US and Canada), we are also
partners in a log home building business in Deep Creek Lake, MD; and this
past May we bought a 55 year old lumber yard and hardware store
specializing in custom mill work, Ingall’s Lumber and Supply in
Middletown, MD. My wife runs the lumber yard (her computer business
supporting airports was a casualty of 9/11). I have the other two
businesses to run so I only work there on Saturdays from 6:30 AM to 1PM.
I’d love to see some old school friends come in. We are also in the
set-up stage for a real estate firm and a new car dealership. One should
open in December 2002 and the second in March 2003. Future
Plans: By the time my youngest starts college (5 years) we will have
divested ourselves of most of the businesses and we’ll find something to
keep us busy for the third part of our lives (part 1 was pre-us, part two
is raising kids and preparing for part three, which is enjoying the fruits
of Part two). What could I have done if I had gotten to work on part two
before I was 35?! Memorable
Teacher: Melvin Weinstein, he was the one who saw I was heading for
trouble. He not only made sure I finished high school, but made sure I
finished well. He would be glad to see that the work ethic he championed
actually took root! I wonder what ever became of him?

(1975) Hi
gang! Well, the long awaited
announcement of an annual get together is here!
We’ve decided to hold this gathering Thanksgiving weekend. So, Saturday, November 30th at the Gaithersburg
Hilton lounge at 7pm. If you
went to the 25th reunion, this is where the “night before”
event was held and also last year’s less-than-stellar annual get
together. Since vacations
seemed to get in the way with a summer reunion, we thought we’d give
fall/winter a try. If this
doesn’t work, never fear, we’ll try to plan one for spring! There
is a restaurant adjacent to the lounge so you might want to consider
coming a bit early and having dinner.
Also, if you need directions to the Hilton, their telephone number
is 301-977-8900 and their address is 620 Perry Pkwy, across from the MoCty
Fairgrounds. So, all of you
who have made submissions in the past 24 months to the MSO and have
checked “AS SOON AS POSSIBLE” for the next reunion, I expect to see
you there! Any questions or
comments are welcome but keep your complaints to yourself! Best regards! From:

(1968) I
went to the Suds & Sun Reunion in OC.
It was a GREAT time!!! Kathy
Neipsey, Danny Duffy did a really good job.
Maybe it could be an annual event???
I flew up from Austin, and there were a lot of people I hadn’t
seen since graduation day. Seacrets
was a good idea, very relaxed. Everyone
had a wonderful time!! From:

(1981) As I
previously mentioned, John is terminally ill with stage four cancer.
His time is limited and every day is a struggle.
He is not typically up for receiving guests, however, he has opened
a web page at www.caringbridge.com/md/johnbuck.
People are welcomed to send messages of encouragement and support.
John’s wife, Wende, has said the notes have lifted his spirits. Also,
a college-fundraiser for his two children is in the works.
It appears that it will happen on Thanksgiving weekend.
I will forward more information as details become finalized. At
times like this, it crystallizes what is truly important.
It’s amazing some of the friendships and bonds made almost a
quarter of a century ago are still so strong.
Peary was a wonderful place for my group of friends and me. Thank
you for all that you do to keep the school alive. From:

(1965) Something
I was reminded of was that Dad had another connection to Peary High (other
than the 3 of us). When we
first moved to Rockville in 1957, Dad was a salesman for an outfit in
Meriden, CT called Miller Lighting and Illuminating.
In that capacity, he sold to the building electrical contractor the
light fixtures that were installed in all the hallways at Peary, as well
as the special fixtures installed in the Mechanical Drawing room. Others
in Tom’s & Tim’s age groups might also remember Dad as their coach
in the Midget (9-12 year old) baseball league in the Aspen Hill/Parkland
area, in which I also coached. [Editor’s
