Subject:  In Memorial - John Patrick Bryan (1978)

Hello to everyone and now that it is September it is Back to School season for those who have kids.  I just wanted to take this opportunity to remember a dear friend, Pat Bryan (Class of 1978) who passed away on September 23, 1987 -- fifteen years ago.  Although I had not seen Pat since the summer of 1981, I thought about him and was kept informed about his life through friends and was deeply saddened by his passing.  It is hard to believe that 15 years have come and gone but I know that his friendships with so many alums meant a great deal.

Subject:  Alumni who own Bichons

Hi there...just wondering if there are any alumni that own Bichon Frise dogs?  I’d love to chat with you thru e-mail about them.  My husband and I own Puffy, a 22-month-old male dog, whom we adopted on January 20, 2001 in a snowstorm.  I will be down to Rockville on October 20th when the Capital Area Bichon Bash will be held.  Please feel free to e-mail me for more details.  Thank you.

How I found out about the website? I have been online for a few years now.

Occupation: Administrative Secretary, Spouse: Gary

Memorable Incidents: 11/12/77 -- the last home football game in a snowstorm.  The kindness of the Class of 1979 during my hospitalization in 1977 and recuperation from major surgery.  Getting kicked off Senior Court when the Class of 1978 had graduated (making the Class of ‘79 seniors) and it was the middle of June.

Since High School: I have been employed by the Federal Government since February 1980.  Since February 1993, I have been with the FAA Technical Center in Atlantic City, NJ.  As with everyone last year on September 11th, working for the FAA gave me a new perspective on my work and my career.  I have come to realize how important our loved ones and friends are to one another.

Future Plans: I hope to continue my career until I am no longer able to do so.  I would like to write a novel.

Memorable Teachers: For me, there are a few that stand out:  Tom Nawrocki (who wanted to flunk me for drivers ed), Pat Hale (who gave me the love of writing), Terry Kilpatrick (for my love of history and government), Sandi Fucci-Nelson, who was the teacher for the deaf and hearing impaired.

Other alums I know about? Gay Laurienzo-San Severino (1979) is married to a psychiatric social worker, Rick, and they live in Hershey, PA with their 8 children.  Their oldest, Dominic, who graduated HS in 2002, is leaving PA to go to FL for work.  Their youngest, Denise, who was 4 on 9/9, entered Head Start.  Gay has finally gotten some free time now that 5 of her 8 children are in school full-time.  We hope to see them soon.

HELP!  I’ve have had a major disaster with my PC and, without boring you with all the gruesome details, the result is that I have lost all updates to the class listing that you sent me during the past year.  If you have sent me changes in your emails, addresses or phones in the past year please re-send them to me so that I can restore my records.

Thanks, Carol

[Editor’s Note: If you haven’t updated in a while... and this is for all classes... you may optionally use the “Sign-up/Update” link from the MSO Main Menu to update any changes to your contact information for your respective graduation year]

Subject:  Peary Running Club

The Peary Running Club got off to a rousing start on August 31st with 7 members participating in the Kentlands 5k in Gaithersburg.  Since then, about 10 more individuals have expressed an interest in joining.  The next race for those interested is the Rockville 5k on October 13th in the King Farm Development off of Redland Road.  Peary Running Club Tee shirts can be ordered through Hank Fox (‘83).

Again, this is a very informal club.  Our sole objective is to get as many alumni, family and friends together to enjoy a little physical activity and catch up on old times.  This is not a competitive team environment, so don’t be intimidated if your interested.  For more details, contact John Golsen (‘82), John Holten (‘82), Hank Fox (‘83) or Tom Smith (‘83).

Subject:  Sister Passed Away

On Friday August 23, 2002, my sister Carol Miller passed way after a long illness. Carol contracted Hepitis C 14 years ago during surgery.  Due to the infected blood she had a liver transplant 10 years ago and a kidney transplant 3 years ago. After the liver transplant Carol had been quite sick but carried on with life as normal as she could. She was full of life, love, and laughter even though she was sick. She will be deeply missed.

Subject:  Father

I regret to report the passing of my father, Donald W. Goodwin, on August 9th, at the age of 77.  He had been suffering from a variety of ills for many years, always bearing the weakness of his body with an unbending spirit, with dignity, and with good humor.  After a few days in the hospital with a new complaint, he passed quietly after surgery to relieve its symptoms - it was all just too much for him.  My Mom, who is now 80, is doing better than might be expected after losing her partner of nearly 56 years.  My two brothers and my two sons were all able to be with her when the time came.

Regards to all,

Guy Goodwin - Class of ‘65
