If you belong to the 85% of alums on MSO who has not supported MSO over the past 7 years, we hope you'll visit: https://id267.securedata.net/pearyhs/donation.htm when you have a chance ... thanks in-advance for your consideraton! PRAYERS NEEDED: Those of you who have followed-along.... unfortunate news. My mom, after going through 4 months of chemo for lung cancer and then declared in-remission a few months ago - it has reared its ugly head again in her brain, and she's currently receiving aggressive radiation. I'm her only kid, and I'm 2,500 miles away. Nothing will be known until results of current treatment are known in the next 10 days or so. Prognosis for this kind of condition is usually not very good. Thank you for your prayers - it helped last time. If ever needed, they are needed now. For those who have "access" to her, it is her request that she receive no calls or visitors at this time, please. Find a Way or Make One. If, for some reason, I do not reply to your e-mails right away, I thank you for your understanding during this stressful period, and if you don't see updates on MSO or processing of changes and sign-ups - well, that's why. Either way things go at this time, a trip to Maryland may be warranted in the next couple of weeks for me. Thank you for your emotional support, everyone who has been "in the loop." I am not handling this situation very well, right now..... limited direct e-mails to me right now would also be appreciated - there's already going to be the usual two-day's worth of follow-up with this newsletter distribution to our 4,100 alums aboard MSO anyway. Bob Lau, Editor/Webmaster The Midnight Sun Online P.S. If you wish to reply or comment, please don't quote this entire newsletter back to us - create a new e-mail to blau@viawest.net, and always include your grad year in the correspondence. If you have changes to your e-mail address or other contact information, please use the main menu links at www.pearyhs.org - it'll go a lot faster and make it easier on us. If you have an article, an update, a change of mailing address - please use the links on the website, rather than direct e-mails if you would. Thanks! ********************************************************************* From: Robert Kibler (1974) Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 Subject: Update Occupation: Professor of English and Humanities, Children: Bethany Anne age 22 Memorable Incidents: skipping school with Mike Rogers and Mark Mellinger to hitchhike downtown to attend anti-war and peace demonstrations of one kind or another. After that, thinking about a trip down the Amazon--adventure learning. Memorable Teachers: You know, I just read a post about Mr. Lugar. I had alot of contact with him, and while he often seemed embittered and cynical, he also had a wry sense of humor and a tenacious spirit. That is it. Lugar had a tenacity that I admire, and perhaps even a kindness. I do hope that the class of 1974 is going to have a reunion. ********** From: Cheryl "Cherry" Pelham Habib (1964) Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 Subject: Update I found out about the websitefrom Candy Beck Burch. So if I gave that impression so many years back, I am sorry. As I recall, our faculty sponsor bailed on us during our senior year when I was editor (some sort of "work action"/teacher's union thing I think) and so it was a bit of a stressful year. Nonetheless I think we turned out a great yearbook. In retrospect I appreciate everyone's efforts and if I didn't then, I guess I was just one of those obnoxious teenage girls! To come up to date: I am still working in the US Senate on the republican staff of the Budget Committee. I live in Baltimore City with my wonderful husband Mark Felder (who is a native of Baltimore and a portfolio manager with Legg Mason). We have a beautiful little girl, Grace. She is 4 1/2 and will be starting kindergarden in the fall at the Bryn Mawr school in Baltimore City. She is my biggest accomplishment in life and a constant source of joy. ********** From: Steve Greenberg (1966) Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2003 Subject: Son Receives Ph. D. He has recently received a large grant to "count every tree in the Tahoe Basin" between California and Nevada. He will use satellite imagry and computer programs to determine the light refraction of the pixels of the individual trees to determine the kind and quantity. Jonathan lives in Napa, California. The entire Greenberg family made the trip from Maryland and Virginia to California to celebrate with Jonathan. Myself and wife, Pam, and son, Micah; David and Shirley Greenberg, Jonathan's grandparents (who still live in English Manor); his Uncle Leslie Greenberg (Class of 1968) and two daughters Erin and Paige; and his Aunt Saundra (Greenberg) Bromberg (Class of 1973) and her husband Richard and his daughter Sara had a great week in California's "Wine Country." ********** From: Jay Wenger (1976) Date: Fri, 4 Jul 2003 Subject: Update Website - http://www.aztechs-lsp.com (business); Occupation: Consultant, President, AZTECHS Memorable Incidents: Too many to list - every day was an adventure! Occupation: Electrical Engineer, Significant Other: Joanne Piotrowski Memorable Incident: March to the board of education (what were we thinking!) Since High School: After a rocky start, I finally got my BS EE/Math from U of MD in 1979. Worked for GE space division for four years then started a business with two partners in 1983. I finished my MSEE at UofM in 1984. In 1986 I sold the business (didn't get much, but it's still around) and returned to school. I finished my PhD in EE in 1992 at UofM (Ok, not much imagination, but I liked it there). During that time I taught for the EE dept (1986 to 1993), worked for a small company doing my research and started another company to do consulting (only me this time). Through a somewhat circuitous chain of events, I ended up as the director of technology for a mid-sized computer company. Personally, I met my significant other (Joanne) while we were both working for GE in 1983. We have been together ever since. We have no children of our own, but we love to borrow our neices and nephews for short periods. Future Plans: Work hard and retire wealthy, healthy and happy. But, seriously, I would like to return to teaching one day. I found it very rewarding but, at this point in my life, I cannot afford to do it. Memorable Teachers: There were many great and memorable faculty members so I'll cite a couple. Mr. Hill: Compentent, dignified, unflappable and, somehow, managed to make me learn. I wish I had attended more of his classes. Mr. Courtney (sp?): A real absent-minded professor type. His informal, unconventional style appealed to the rebel in me. After observing him electronics shop, I realized that nothing shocks him. ********** From: GUY DECHENE (1965) Date: Wed, 9 Jul 2003 Subject: Update How I found out about the website? Bringing home my first report card in 11th grade with 2 A's and 4 B's. I had never seen my parents cry prior to that day. Since High School: I retired after serving 23 Years Active Duty in the Air Force, 2 years in the Air National Guard. I was fortunate enough to serve my country, travel, meet great people, and be stationed all over the world. Also I was fortunate enough to attend school and earn a couple of Masters Degrees along the way. Future Plans: A few years back I had a little heart incident so I plan to stay healthy, stay employed, and keep all options open. I may possibly pursue an EDD or PhD program. Memorable Teachers: You know thinking back they were all great, and they all gave us something special in their own way. I will always remember them no matter how many years pass. However, I really do appreciate Ms Brewer's kind comments and encouragement to me, a student who took three years of Art and to this day cannot even draw a decent stick man, very sad. I also appreciate Mr Jacobs and the Consumer Math Course, which was the most practical course I attended in High School. Lastly during my Senior Year I coasted a bit and took courses like Bachelor Living, Art and Consumer Math, so I will never forget the horror on Ms McDonald's (Guidance Counselor) face when I showed her my letter of acceptance to St Francis College in PA. Other alums I know about? I believe I saw Alan Bandler cruising down Georgia Avenue on a motorcycle with a "Rent a Hubby" sign on his back. Since High School: Went to Maryland for a year, dropped out. Bounced around a lot, spent many years working on and off at a summer camp year around (Camp Friendship). In between worked at UPS, went back to Maryland (dropped out with a year to go, decided I didn't have the patience to teach high school math). Picked up recycling bins for Waste Management up in Northern Montgomery County, gave that up when they went to all paper, worked for George Mason University in the Student Accounts Department. Finally landed a job as a Unit Administrator for my Army Reserve unit (299th ENG CO) out of Fort Belvoir. Through all that bouncing around I managed to do 14 years of Reserve duty with my unit. I just got back from a 8 and a half month long deployment in the Southwest Asia, 4 and a half months in Kuwait and the rest in Iraq. It was quite interesting to "breach the berm and attack another country". I did not have to fire my weapon once, although there were some dicey moments. They sent me home ahead of my unit to repair a hernia. For those who are sending packages and correspondence to troops abroad, I thank you all. Your efforts and donations are definitely appreciated. I've never been one to dwell on the past and I kinda thought going to reunions would be like re-living high school again. So I've always skipped 'em in the past. But it was nothing like that. It was really fun to see so many old acquaintences. One of the few things I did at Peary was play soccer and I was happy to see Holger Serrano and Charles Blaha who were team-mates and friends. Holger looks like he hasn't aged a day since 1973. It was fun to reminisce about our soccer exploits. It was good to see Sherri Davis who I remember as always being sweet to everyone. Some things never change, I guess. Thanks, Sherri for the Cha-Cha! It was good to see Grant Nisson who I believe I met in 1969 or so in a CYO baseball league. I remember Grant as being a genuinely nice guy. It was a real pleasure to meet Grant's sister, Julie '74, who I remembered but really didn't know well in high school; but I wish I had! Thanks Julie, for the interesting conversation and attempt at West Coast Swing. By the next reunion I'll expect that you know the basic figures really well! ;-) It was good to see Dee Dee (Kefauver) who I remember well from junior high (Parkland) because I had a major crush on her in 8th & 9th grades, but was far to! o shy to tell her. So I finally told her 30 years later for what it's worth! Thanks Dee Dee, hopefully in the next event I see you at we'll get a chance talk a while longer. It was good to talk a bit with Marie (Lozupone) Denissen who actually has gone to my church for the past ten years or so and we somehow never figured out that we knew each other until a few weeks before the reunion. I was especially happy to see Dawn (Thorpe) who looks just as gorgeous now as she did in '73. Dawn, thanks for the conversation and the dancing. You're awesome! All I can say is, the time was just too short for my money. I hope we can stay in touch, I didn't have the presence of mind to get your e-mail before you left so, shoot me an e-mail, OK? It would be nice to hear you sing at one of your gigs. For those of you who are going to the Seacrets event in OC in Sept., I'll see you there! Regards, Mike King PS Steve Knight: How are you doing, man? I haven't seen you since my Phd party years ago. We should get together soon. You ladies obviously lived in the deep end of the gene pool, you all looked great. Dawn, you are more vibrant than ever. Carol it was nice to meet you, Sherrie, I don't know what the hell you had in that purse but it must be a vial from the fountain of youth. Diane, we've been buds for ever and you and Barry mean the world to me. This was probably the most enjoyable reunion to date. I would welcome any and all to keep in touch. Motorcycle riders. Call me. If you don't own a bike and want to ride I'm sure we can find a back seat for you.
