Subject:  Camp Peary (March Newsletter)

This one’s for Skip Fitzgerald.  The word on the street is that Camp Peary outside Williamsburg, VA is the CIA’s operational (paramilitary) training station.  Last stop before you parachute into Mazar i sharif, that sort of thing.  Big fence, lots of security you can’t see.  They probably keep your name on a list for snooping around asking questions.  It gets a mention in one of Patricia Cornwell’s earlier books.

Subject:  Passing of my Father

Hello to all! The most wonderful man in my life...my Dad, passed away peacefully but so unexpectedly of lung and brain cancer on March 24th 2001. It’s been a long and lonely year without him, but I have the best Guardian Angel that anyone could ever ask for. He adored everyone and was loved by all. I was honored to have been his daughter for 39 yrs.  God Bless him!

Subject:  Sept 11th Artwork and Music by Alumni

I would like to announce my recent artwork. “The Promise” by International Portrait Artist Dayle Duffy (Peary 1966) is an expression of what I imagined took place in the Spiritual Realm on Sept. 11th.

The original artwork was in Pastels, my medium of choice. The print comes 16x20” on acid free paper with title and scripture centered in lower white border. Currently this print is being sold in Mt Airy’s Town Hall to raise money for scholarship funds. These funds are for the children of, or in memory of the two town residents killed in the Pentagon disaster.

The BALTIMORE SUN did an article introducing this fundraiser. “It is the artist’s desire to offer a print to family members of the victims.” 25 have already been donated and delivered to Firehouses and Parishes or churches of the fallen in NY. Numbers are also donated to several fundraisers in NY and Washington

I also plan to continue sending or presenting these to Firehouses, Town Halls, Hospitals, Police Headquarters and etc where the fallen worked or were known. I’ve included representative portraits of victims in an attempt to honor the fallen and represent the many walks of life, ages, races and Nationalities struck down that day. The portraits are meant to be merely representative and not exact likenesses.

This Limited Edition is 750 and 375 of the prints are being used as donations for fundraising or display as a memorial or comfort.  Each print will come signed by the artist and dedicated to anyone or organization of their choice with pencil on the white border. For every print purchased one is donated. Please go to my website www.portraitart4u.com to learn more. My husband wrote and sang a companion CD listen at ...www.meadowmart.com  to accompany this artwork.

This will offer our alumni a chance to help out. My husband and I will be presenting our art and music at several Border Book Store locations this spring.  April 13 in Germantown [was] our first engagement.

Thank You,
Dayle

I found out about the website from my sister Patty Duffy (Peary 72).

Occupation: Artist & Mont. Co. Art Teacher, Spouse: Michael, Children: Son age 12 Matthew, Daughter 8 Paige Noel

Memorable Incidents: Football Games, Mrs. Glass’s Art Class, Dancing to the Jukebox at lunch, The Hot Shoppes

Since High School: Dayle studied art her whole life - both at home and abroad. In her twenties, she worked her way around the world doing portraits and sketches. She emigrated to Australia and became somewhat of a celebrity there for her artistic talent. Other than her art being featured through major department stores and hotel chains, she was a guest entertainer aboard Princess Cruises out of Sydney, cruising the South Pacific. Later, in London, she was hired by CBS London to do portraits for album covers. In her 30’s after returning to the states, she continued as a portraitist in Annapolis, Md. while returning to college for her Art Ed degree. She has been teaching ART in Montgomery Co. Public Schools for 18 years.

She sailed the Atlantic one summer on a 65 foot Trimaran and landed in the Azores where she was hired to do artwork for their summer festival and department of tourism. Her latest “adventure” has been to present her premier limited edition print “Winter Wolves”, her second Limited Edition “Evening Wolves” and “The Promise” being used for fundraising and comfort. Dayle feels not only captures the wolf, its habits and beauty but also gives glory to the Lord who gave her the artistic Gift!

Future Plans: More Art produced Glorifying our Lord. To continue to Bless rather than impress others I come in contact with. To grow more humble and in service to others.

Memorable Teachers: Mrs. Glass my art and homeroom and class sponsor.  Ms. Vidala who worked so hard. Mr Williams who named me “Duffy” and tried to pair me up with Dennis Diehl while learning to square dance.

Occupation: Alliance Technology Manager, Significant Other: Bruce Waterfield, Children: Diane - 13, Michael - 11, Grandchildren: Not Yet!

Since High School: Just wanted to post an update to what I’ve been doing since my last MSO update.  It’s amazing how fast life goes by!  I just took another job with IBM as a Technology Manager assisting high tech companies to form strategic partnerships with IBM.  It requires a fair amount of travel, but I enjoy making new friends wherever I go!  I’ve even had the opportunity to meet up with some fellow Peary alumns!  I still live in Austin, TX and love it here.  I spend most of my time outdoors with a running club or boating out on the lake.  The kids are growing fast and and we all are approaching the teenage years (yikes!).  My daughter’s soccer team was the state championship team last year and my son has ‘graduated’ from cub scouts to boy scouts.

Future Plans: To keep working, travel, and enjoy every day of life!

If any fellow Peary grads pass through Austin, let me know.  It’s a GREAT place to visit!

Life is very crazy and extremely fun out here [San Diego, CA].  I’m currently the Director for West Coast Operations for SETA Corporation but have given notice and will wrap up with SETA on April 19.  On the 23rd I’ll be flying down to Palm Beach, FLA for a week of scuba diving, Disney World, and general mayhem and then heading down to Equador on the 30th.  I’ll be in Eq until June 10 and will come back to work for a small company called Antin Engineering.  Nothing is settled yet but it looks like my initial assignment will take me to Ft Huachuca, AZ for a few months to fill in as PM on a project, covering for the regular PM who has been deployed to Afghanistan.

While I’m in Eq I’ll be learning Spanish and finishing up a book that I’m intending will go to the publisher late summer/early fall.  In Arizona I’ll just be working part time and will spend the rest of the time finishing a business plan for a new company I plan to start by the end of this calendar year.

How I found out about the website? I went looking for it a few years ago.  Occupation: Computer Tutor Clubhouse founder & WAY too happy wife and mom, Spouse: Kim David Jensen, Children: Jannine Teri (3 months), Grandchildren: GRANDCHILDREN?!!! . . . are we getting that old already?!  I think it’ll be awhile for us :-)

Memorable Incidents: Dr. Dumes “pounding the pulpit” and saying, “Peary is NOT dead!”  I think, in a way, he was very right.  Much credit for that should go to the amazing folks who have been our glue - keeping us together through the Internet and these reunions.  I also believe Dr. Dumes really hasn’t gone away either . . . like our school, he’ll always be with us.

Since High School: I’ve been having more fun than a crocodile in a henhouse!

Went on to get a degree in Recreational Therapy from Brigham Young University.  Also served a mission 1 ½ years in Argentina.  Married in 1990.  Still on our honeymoon.  While waiting to be blessed with kids, our consolation prize was to travel to foreign countries like Egypt, England, Russia, Singapore, New Zealand, Utah . . .

Worked as a Rec Therapist at the real “Hotel California” - Camarillo State Hospital-DC with wonderful folks who had mental illnesses (gang teens to the “chronologically gifted”).

When the hospital closed, became an entreprenuer (though I can’t spell it!), developing the Computer Tutor concept, including the latest branch - Multimedia Scrapbooking.

On Christmas Eve, a “Regalita” (little gift) joined our family.  Jannine was adopted when 3 days old.  If I were any happier, I’d have to be twins! (Thanks for asking)

Future Plans: Will soon be releasing an “edutainment” audio course to help folks learn how to use the Internet.  Will be patenting several inventions.  Hoping that CBS will be airing a “feel-good” reality show concept.  Really will finally skinny-up (really!).  My most daunting aspiration is to be a good mom!

Memorable Teachers: So MANY great ones!  One would be Mrs. Hales, sponsor of the school newspaper.  I was always so thankful for her depth and the respect she gave us.

Other alums I know about?  I’ll try to contact Heidi Houck’s folks and see if I can get this for you.

High 5’s to you guys!  We need to put you organizers through the Xerox machine - We need a lot more folks like you who understand that “school spirit” goes way beyond jumping up and down at a football game (I want to be more like you when I grow up!).

In spite of any doubts Vadala & Gibbs may have had about my weird and randomly witty writings, I have finally managed to get published. Here’s the low-down on my highbrow ramblings via the publisher (Sybex.com):

Son of Web Pages That Suck:  Learn Good Design by Looking at Bad Design

By Vincent Flanders with Dean Peters - May 2002

ISBN: 0-7821-4020-3 - Level: All Levels | Type: How-to/Reference

Yes, it is an unfortunate title, but that’s what the publisher wanted, so that’s what they got.

Now for those of you who really, really like me, and you two know who you are, might I suggest using the following link if you want to buy the book via Amazon ... http://buythebook.deanpeters.com

You see, I didn’t write the entire book, but just the Bleeding edge chapter, along with some other contributions here and there. Vincent Flanders is the real genius behind this stuff. This means I don’t get a cut of the sales ... unless you http://buythebook.deanpeters.com/ !-)

If you do http://buythebook.deanpeters.com/, you’ll be doing your part to keep “babies from crying and puppies from dying.” Yeah, that last quote is in the book as well.

So c’mon, learn good design through bad examples...

Subject:                Impromptu Reunion in the Baltic

It was with no small amount of surprise when on a recent Navy Reserve tour of duty in the Baltic Sea that three Peary classmates turned up on the same ship. In February, I was scheduled for a routine NATO Fleet exercise that consisted of joining up with the Second Fleet Command Ship “USS Mount Whitney” in Kiel Germany and participating in the Baltic Sea for a three week multi-national military exercise. I expected to be surrounded by mostly young Navy types and many foreign country participants that I had never met before. This was the case but I was pleasantly surprised to meet not one, but two Peary classmates on board.  Captain Dave Prothero ‘74 (Commanding Officer of the USS Mount Whitney) and Lieutenant Commander Tim Gedney ‘75 (a pilot assigned to the Second Fleet). It was a nice homecoming and there is a picture of the three of us that Tim will be submitting shortly. (I’m the old looking guy). I just want to know how they kept their full head of hair and continue to look so young? It prompted me to work out each night in the gym on board.

It just goes to show that you can never tell where you might run into some past friends. (In case you’re wondering - the ship survived the mini-reunion and is still afloat!)

Subject:  Philbin Update: Oscar del la Hoya Cancels Vargas Fight!!!

At approximately 11:30 AM West Coast Time the Vargas Camp received a press release that said Oscar del la Hoya has canceled the HBO- Pay-per-view fight with Fernando Vargas! It was scheduled on May 4th at the Mandalay Bay (Sold Out) in Vegas. It appears that Oscar has re-injured his left hand.

Of course, the Vargas camp believes that the injury is suspect and that the word got out that Fernando was in the best shape of his life and already close to weight. We believe that Oscar needed more time to prepare for this WAR and Fernando’s strength and power and improved technical skills and defense strategies.

My deepest apologies to all my friends and families who have bought tickets (reimbursement), made hotel arrangements, and bought airfares.  The situation is obviously out of our control. I also apologize for the mass e-mail but I thought it best to reach as many people ASAP.

Well, I will keep you all posted on any developments. Thanks for your time.

Memorable Incidents: The fun days and the fun people who actually were a decent group to hang out with.  Smoking court and the rowdies and walking into the main hallway past all the football wanna be’s.

Since High School: I have been working in the area of Mortgage Finance for the last 20 years.  I am currently a Loan Officer specializing in all types of mortgages to help everyone achieve homeownership and loving every minute.  You know me, little suzy chatterbox, so I put those skills to work.  I have been traveling out West for the last 3 years exploring and living the wild life.  I have been living in Colorado for the last several years and have returned to Maryland recently.  I have a daughter who I absolutely adore and enjoy my life.  I spend time hanging out with some friends from time to time and spending time with Alexis and the rest of my family.  Life can only get better.  I love the West Coast, however I have returned to work on business here for the time being.  I spend a lot of time camping, hiking and generally enjoying the outdoors when the weather cooperates.  I have been to Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, California, New Mexico, Kansas, Texas and such.  It was nice to that there is more to life than Maryland.  I have met a lot of nice people and developed a lot of business contacts over the last several years.  I also have my own Mortgage Company, which is doing quite well. I could go on and on and on........

Future Plans: I am looking into further career development and moving into commercial development.  I have applied to return to school for further education to continue my personal growth towards a hefty retirement, and possible early retirement at that.

I found out about this from my younger brother who found it through a search engine.  Occupation: co-owner of Total Leather Care, a leather furniture repair business.  Spouse: Chris Pritchard (from Seattle, WA) I met him at a Christian ranch during the early ‘70’s Jesus Movement in northern California.  We’ve been married 28 years!  Children: Jessica 16, Justin 13

Memorable Incident: I was pretty much of a loner during high school.  I didn’t fit in with the cheerleaders and jocks.  I didn’t fit in with the greasers.  I didn’t fit in with the druggies.  So I hung out with the other people I found hanging out by them.  Except for when I had a boyfriend.  Then I hung out with him.  :-).  I joined the Bag Pipe band because my boyfriend, Tom Stambaugh, was in it.  It was fun.

Since High School: After Peary, attended St. Francis College near Altoona, PA for 1 year.  Then transferred to University of MD for one semester.  School seemed separate from real life to me with the Vietnam War going on and I decided to drop out and hitch hike around the country with my girlfriend from St.Francis and find the “real meaning of life.” After 6 months of hitch hiking across the country 3 times, I ended up at a Christian commune in Eureka, CA and became a born-again Christian.  I met my husband there and lived there until 1975.  We moved to NYC for two years where my husband was one of the church elders.  Then we moved to Philadelphia in 1977 to start a church.  We did that until 1987 when we decided to close the church.  We now attend a 6,000-member church called Calvary Chapel, which also started out in California back in the ‘70’s.  And we own a leather furniture repair business that I work in 4-6 hours daily before having to be a taxi for the kids to their sports events, etc.

Future Plans: Continuing to work in the business. Adapting to the needs of my teenagers.  Not the least bit worried of what to do with myself once we have an empty nest. I’m hoping when that happens we can travel!  Don’t see retirement in the near future, gotta save more money to be able to retire in the lifestyle I am accustomed to!

Memorable Teachers: I especially remember Mrs. Goodman who taught me Latin.  One of the things my husband and I have in common is that we both took 4 years of Latin!

Most of my family still lives in Rockville so we still go to visit there.

Subject:  Looking for a long lost friend

For years now, I’ve been desperately trying to locate one of my best friends from school years.  Her name is STACY DEGRAFF.  We went to Parkland Jr High, Peary in ‘84 for our sophomore year, and then on to Wheaton HS.  A few years after high school, growing into our adult years, we lost contact.  She moved a lot.  I went by her family’s old house on Parkland Drive where her sister Kelly lived for some time after their mother’s passing, but I found out that they moved.

I figure maybe someone would see this and hopefully can get Stacy in contact with me.  She has older sisters Kelly and Leslie, whom I believe both attended Peary, and a younger sister Correy.

I can be reached via email at Shelbi010@aol.com.

Thank you so very much for anything you can do.  And thank you for your continued work in keeping the Peary spirit alive.

A few of us from the Class of ‘68, thru our Midnight Sun website, got chatting with one another and decided to start a “Reach the Beach” - “Sun and Suds Peary 1st Annual” in Ocean City, MD. It was going to be for the Class of ‘68 - but many alumni from other classes wanted to join in.

The Class of ‘68 would like to challenge the other classes of Peary High to see who can get the most people from their class to show up.  There will be a 50/50 drawing, which proceeds will go to help support the Midnight Sun Online.

The plan is to meet at Seacrets, 49th and De Bay, Saturday September 28th at 3:00 p.m. - by the Boat Bar. If you have never been there - you’ll find it as soon as you go inside the gates. (See www.Seacrets.com)  You must be 21 years of age to be on this side of the beach. We will do a headcount of classes around 6 p.m. (‘68 RULES!  Other classes drool)

That weekend is also the Corvette Show and Winefest. Some recommended hotels are as follows and still have space available:
