(1979) Greetings
fellow Huskies. I have been
in contact with Gay Laurienzo San Severino and her brood.
They recently added a dog to their family. “Penny”, a beagle joined the family in late January.
My husband, Gary, and I adopted a Bichon Frise whom we named Puffy
(a boy Bichon) on January 20. Puffy
was born on November 5, 2000 and has become the light of our lives.
Gay informed me that her nephew, Kevin (son of alum Jill Laurienzo
Coleman - 1981) will tie the knot with fiancée Angela on April 28th.
Angela and Kevin have a daughter, Valerie Sharron and are expecting
their 2nd baby in mid-June.
Gay will be singing in the wedding service.
Just an FYI...Gay and hubby Rick still have 8 children.
Their oldest is Dominic, who was 17 in February.
The youngest, Denise, will be 3 in September. Gay is home schooling a few of her kids (which ones I can’t
remember). We hope to get
together to have a joint 40th birthday celebration in the
summer. From:

graduates of Peary High School, Pat Minogue (73) of Redding, Ca, Peggy
Wallace (75) of Martinez, Ca, Marie Terry Minogue (76) of Rocklin, Ca, and
Frank Minogue (78) of Cheyenne Wyoming. Some of you may remember my mother as your old Girl Scout
Leader. The family is asking
for donation in my mothers name to the Friend’s of Girl Scout Campaign.
I encourage all women, young and old, to participate in screenings
to prevent breast cancer; it hit my mother fast and hard. Thank you. Peggy

there were other great times, like lots of “cruisin’” (once we had

trying to be in the ski club with NO skiing skill, and of course, ALWAYS
going downtown on the 4th of July for the Beach Boys Concerts! Since

(1979 grad mom) Philip
Mathieu, Class of 1979, has enjoyed a successful music career since
graduation. He received a
degree in guitar performance from George Mason University.
In his musical career, he has performed with Charlie Byrd as a
member of the Washington Guitar Quintet, released a debut Christmas Album
in 1993, titled “Simple Gifts” and most recently is the lead guitarist
in a rockabilly band known as “Ruthie and the Wranglers.”
On one of their albums, he co-wrote many of the songs and I am
especially proud of one he wrote which he dedicated to his Dad after he
passed away in 1998. It is a
guitar instrumental called “Farewell Polka.”
It was a very moving tribute.
Currently, Philip is doubling as a guitar and mandolin player at
the Ford’s Theater in Washington, DC in the play titled “Songs from
the Tall Grass.” Philip keeps me and his brother and sister (also Peary
graduates) informed of Peary High School happenings. From:
Beth Leimbach Swanson <hbwws@aol.com>
(1966) Dearest
Friends— It is
with a heavy yet happy heart that I send you the news of my mother taking
“the next step in her journey through this universe.” Mom
left her earthly body this afternoon at 1:40.
My father was with her and I had seen her very shortly before she
left. She passed on easily
and peaceably. Saturday had
been a very rough day for her and, in her own way, she let us know that
she didn’t want to stay around any longer.
My father and I had gotten to the hospice house about 12:30 and I
truly believe she had waited for us to get there before finally letting
go. She has fought for so
many years through so many illnesses that all she wanted now was to rest. As
many of you know, [my husband] Bill is scheduled to have a total knee
replacement done this Wed. and we are going ahead with those plans.
Mom emphatically did not want a viewing and a funeral per se, so we
have tentatively scheduled a memorial service for the weekend after
Easter. Bill should be out of
the hospital by then and able to attend - if not, I’ll kidnap him for a
day!! I am
so grateful that I had these past 2+ years to reconcile with my mother. If you have any estranged relationships in your lives, please
take the opportunity to give or seek forgiveness before it is too late.
“We pass this way but once.” With
love to you all— [Harriette’s
children who graduated from Peary include Beth, Jim (1968) who died in
1987, Michael (1973), Linda (1974), and Annamarie “Rie” (1976).] From:

Request Have
you ever read the Midnight Sun Online? For
those of you who are in your early 30’s to those of you who have passed
the FIVE-O mark, and yes some who are beyond that, and all those in
between, you read the Midnight Sun Online, and on occasion you talk about
the MSO to a friend or brag about it to a neighbor or work associate. It
is time to think about how great it is to enjoy it without the hard work
of keeping it going, golly it must be just a nice thing these people are
doing. Thank you volunteers, thank you dedicated staff members, thank you
Alumni group, and thank you BOB LAU for all the hard work to make this
happen. NOW I MUST GET BACK TO WORK, I HAVE THANKED EVERYONE I CAN THINK
OF, WHAT ELSE COULD ANYONE NEED? WELL If
you grew up around Peary High School you know darn well “THANK YOU” is
not enough. From giving out free smile buttons in the early 60’s, to
participating in “It’s Academic,” you understood there was a real
cost in real $$$. The open gym on Sundays was not free, as someone had to
pay the fees and for the person in charge. As we have gotten older, we
realize the enormous need to raise funds sometimes and how hard it is to
secure the needed funds no matter how great the cause is. If
you have never read the MSO before, and will never read it in the future,
please stop reading and go back to whatever it is you do. BUT if you do,
have, or will read the MSO, let’s get serious. Some of us reading this
cannot afford to pay for food, shelter, church, or clothes.
For those people who are down on their luck this is not meant to
drop salt into your pain of circumstance. It is
a call and challenge to those of us who eat regularly, (dine
occasionally), have a home, (a nice home), see a higher authority than
your spouse, (attend a service or two), wear nice clothes, (if your spouse
will let you), even might own a car of your dreams. Growing up, we
understood raising money is ‘The American Way ‘ “I will find a way
or make one.” This of course leads us into the life of people knocking
at our door, in person, by mail, or on the phone wanting us to contribute
to pay for someone else’s activity. Who pays for the activities we want? I
would not be so crass as to mention this to anyone who is, never has, or
never will read the MSO. It is clear to me when I give of my time, my
efforts, and my feelings and freely give a dollar or two to a cause -I
feel better. Well here comes the punch line. Wouldn’t it be nice for all
of those people who spend hours and hours and hours of their own time,
expertise, and some of their own money to provide us with the MSO every
month, if we as successful readers could set up a way to fund the inner
workings on a permanent basis? I am
not rich, and never will be, but I can, and I am sending the Peary Alumni
Association a check for $1,000 to be put into a special account so that
the earnings can help off set the basic cost of running the MSO. With
the help of the Alumni Association and others of you who might contribute,
the earnings could be enough to keep the site open every year. Would
non-readers be willing to do this? Probably not. Sometime in life you have
to try to make a difference in the future. I am ashamed that all those
people who keep this venture going with their efforts, time, and, yes,
their own money must resort to begging (I know, I ran a $30,000 athletic
department with $16,000 of gate receipts and $6,000 from the county.)
Raising money is hard to do and demeaning at times. This
letter is meant to be a call to all of you who are in a life stage where
money, which once decided if you and your family could go out to dinner
once a month, is no longer a serious concern. I am not asking those of you
who have very limited means to try to find a dollar or two. Isn’t it
ironic how often those who have the least financially are the ones who
want to try the hardest to help a wonderful concept? I think it has to do
with HEART. Are
you still reading? Still
reading?? OK! If you have $1,000 in the bank that you really believe will
never be spent for you or your family, please consider this a knock at
your door to help fund the future MSO, maybe forever. Let’s pretend 19
others joined me with a $1,000 contribution making it a total of $20,000.
Let’s pretend again it earns 7% a year. Guess what, that could be $1400
of the cost to keep the site open for a year, and nobody had to knock on
your door while we all enjoyed the future MSO. If more than 20 could
participate in this challenge it is possible all those people who work so
hard to bring the MSO to life each month could work without the nightmare
of what happens if “we have to shut it down for lack of funds.” For
many of you who have helped MSO stay open in the past, I am afraid your
financial support will always be needed. This letter is an attempt to
provide for the basic needs to keep the site open and does not include the
ongoing expenses of all the numerous up-dates and changes and the new
material each month, which will always cost something. A larger fund would
cover more of the cost and reduce the need to raise funds all year as it
is now. If you can join the challenge, please do and if you cannot please
continue to support the MSO whenever you can.
As special as I know Peary High is to many of you who entered the
front door, I am beginning to understand how special this web site is to
all of us. Well
since you are still reading I owe you one. “There once was man for
Nantucket .... “Oops, I remember now my 5th grade teacher in
1943 told me never to repeat that joke (what I thought was a joke) again.
Sorry folks. Someone
said not long ago, “I bet if Burlas cut himself he would bleed Navy Blue
and Arctic White”. You know, maybe he is right. There are a lot of
things that could be worse. Who knows, maybe giving a knock at your door
was one of them. God Bless and Take Care Mr. B (ed burlas) [If
