INTRODUCTION Greetings
Huskies: FORMER
TEACHER PASSES ON:
From the Washington Post Obituaries Wednesday, June 13, 2001; Page B07,
courtesy Doug Adams (1970) Muriel
Nicholson Hoover - Teacher Muriel
Nicholson Hoover, 89, a retired District of Columbia and Montgomery County
Public Schools educator, died of pneumonia June 9 at Carriage Hill Nursing
Center in Bethesda. Ms.
Hoover, an 80-year resident of Takoma Park, was born in Grafton, W.Va.,
and came to the Washington area with her family as a child. She
graduated from Central High School, where her father, Lawrence Grant
Hoover, was principal, and from Wilson Teachers College. She
received a master’s degree in history from the University of Wisconsin.
For more than 30 years, Ms. Hoover taught history and geography at Alice
Deal Junior High School and Anacostia High School in the District and at
Robert E. Peary High School in Rockville. She retired in the mid-1970s. She
traveled to such areas as Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, Europe and Mexico, using
those journeys to enliven her teaching. Ms. Hoover was a member of the
League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women and
the Takoma Park Historical Society. She
leaves no immediate survivors. [If
you remember the centerfold/map incident, you remember Ms. Hoover] TIME
CAPSULE: A reminder that John Horvat is collecting items for the Peary
