From:
Lisa Couturier <LCouturier@AOL.com>
(1980) I
found out about the website from the Peary alum page.
Occupation:
writer, Spouse: Kirk Mettam, Children: Madeleine Couturier Mettam,
four-and-a-half years old Since
High School: I have just recently returned to Maryland, after living in
Manhattan for the last 15 years. In New York, I was articles editor for
New Woman and Redbook magazines. I then worked as a freelance writer for
environmental and wildlife magazines while attending graduate school at
NYU, which I finished with in 1994. I had my first child, Madeleine, in
1995, and she has brought me great joy. Shortly after her birth I returned
to writing and have published essays in several anthologies (American
Nature Writing 1998 (Sierra Club Books); The Mountain Reader (Lyons
Press); American Nature Writing 2000: A Celebration of Women Writers
(Oregon State University Press); The River Reader (Lyons Press); and, most
recently, I have just finished a piece for the National Geographic Society
about returning to Washington and the urban nature in the DC area. It will
appear in a book called Heart of the Nation, this fall. Currently, I am
working on another idea for National Geographic. Also, I teach essay
writing at the Writers Center in Bethesda.
Other things: I’ve traveled to Borneo twice and worked with
orangutans; traveled throughout Latin America (including hiking in the
Andes, sailing along the southern tip of the continent to Tierra Del Fuego
and through the Chilean fjords, and sailing in the Galapagos Islands). Future
Plans: It’s great to be back in Maryland. My husband and I love living
here and raising our daughter here. We have a small place along the
Potomac and feel quite blessed to have found such a beautiful spot.
We would like to have a second child soon. I plan to continue
working from my home, where I write, to “spread the word” about
wildlife and environmental conservation. Memorable
Teachers: Mrs. Flynn, my English teacher. She gave me confidence to be a
writer. Mr. Stamoulis, the
photography teacher; he was just a hoot—and a good photographer. Mrs.
Brewer, the art teacher, who listened, again and again, to the Grateful
Dead, all the while encouraging our artistic selves. Looking
forward to the big event. Thanks, Janet. From:
Marcia Gay Cohen Boyer <marciagboyer@yahoo.com>
(1965) I
found out about the website through a letter from Elizabeth Carter. Occupation:
High School Teacher, Sunnyslope H S - Phoenix, Spouse: William
(“Skip”), Children: Melanie Lynn - 23, Kristopher W. “Kit” Boyer Memorable
Incidents: The musicals; Dr. Dunn’s phone call to me, Xmas ‘65
inquiring about the whereabouts of the missing picture of the Class of
‘65; Class trip to the World’s Fair (‘64) and the door not having a
lock (we used a chair); and the list goes on. Since
High School: I graduated from Hastings College with a BA in English,
minors in Drama/Speech and Secondary Ed, May ‘69.
I married Skip one-week later in Omaha.
We will celebrate #31, May 31st.
We began our careers in Pratt, KS and ventured forth to Union, MO,
Virginia Beach, VA, Lakeland, FLA, and have been in Phoenix since 1983. Our children were born in Norfolk, VA. Skip and I have led an
exciting life with our travels, but on paper are the average all-American
family. The details are available upon request, but every dream I ever
dreamed back in ‘65 has come true with a lot more added. Future
Plans: I look forward to retirement in 2005!!!! Memorable
Teachers: Mrs. Magrab, Mr. Sprowles, Mr. Gibbs, Ms. Bladen, Mr. Hill, and
Mr. McKay. Each was the
ultimate professional, dedicated to kids, and each held a standard that
would be scoffed at today. I am
so happy that you found me! This
is a beautiful site! From:
mary callen baker <phil.baker@jhuapl.edu>
