From:
Alan Goldberg <glockberg@erols.com>
(1974) After
nearly 22 years as a cop, I have attended many police funerals, too many.
In fact, as a member of the department’s honor guard, I have folded the
flag or attended the funerals of police officers from around the region.
Some I had known, most were complete strangers. Every May during National
Police Week we honor those law enforcement officers that have given their
lives so the rest of us can enjoy our freedom and way of life. We look
forward to working the Police Week detail, staring into the eyes of the
greiving parents and spouses, the children whose world is torn from them,
can be a gut wrenching experience. Why would anyone wish to watch these
events at such a high emotional cost? The answer is family. At police
funerals there is always talk of family. The blood family as well as the
extended, police family. It is a family unique and limited to those whose
profession places us in harms way each day we kiss our children goodby.
Despite the emotions, the well of tears held back, there is comfort and
warmth in the feeling of belonging that one shares in this family. As I
walked through the reception line of officers that stood for hours waiting
to pay respects for our fallen brother, Bruce Prothero, I recognized
another family. This family was not related by blood. It was not
associated by occupation. It was a family none the less. Bruce
Prothero’s funeral was a celebration of life. It was also a reunion of
sorts, a multiclass reunion. The comment was made that Peary turned out
the largest number of cops, criminals and landscapers of any other
Montgomery County high school. Some Peary graduates were wearing uniforms
of Montgomery County, Prince Georges’ County and other police and law
enforcent agencies. Peary graduates attended in respectable numbers, some
had known Bruce or his family, some never met him.
This is the third family that I spoke of. The graduates of Peary
High share a unique bond that does not manifest itself in alumni of many
other schools. To Bruce’s family; you will never be alone. They will
always be part of the police family and the Peary family. Our thoughts and
prayers are with you. From:

the grey behind! The people involved in the construction and upkeep of
this site deserve a big THANK YOU from anyone who went to Peary High

archives of newsletters and have seen a lot of fellow classmates words and

reading the assigned book for English then, after me giving a quick book
review would later B.S. an oral report and get an A everytime, Ms.Gordy
always being pregnant-for years! Honest! ALWAYS misspelling things on my
calligraphy projects in art (Do you think if Peary was still open Ms.
Brewer and Ms. Glass would still be playing the song “Southern

High School: Graduated University of Maryland Nursing School, while
working in the Emergency Dept. I met my wonderful husband of 17 years,
Les. Then worked in Labor and Delivery at Shady Grove Adventist(Yes, that

delivery room-I felt it was not the appropriate time for reunions!), then
as I worked on having three girls I worked as Admin. Head Nurse for a
large OB/GYN practice for 12 years. I presently work for the Dept. of
Health and Human Services as a School Nurse. Toughest job I’ve ever had but I enjoy the secondary
schools a lot. I’m presently at Hoover M.S., Wayside Elem. and Potomac
Elem. I’m waiting for a high school position to open. All the girls swim
in the summer and my oldest, all year round. They also do field hockey (I
still would love to coach one day), soccer etc. etc. Every chance we get
we are at the beach condo or just enjoying our friends here in
Poolesville. I love antiques and have quite a collection. My husband still
won’t buy the old house to put them in though. Mostly we live for our
girls and though we look at every swim meet, band cocert and academic
award as an accomplishment we can’t help but be a little sad they are
growing so fast. Future

“cool old stuff”. Travel more with Les. Memorable
Teachers: Mr. Pine and Ms. Tigani for always caring about us and not
treating us like “just a kid”, Ms. Brewer for giving me confidence in
my artwork that I never had before. Mr. Steel for being such a “cool”
chemistry teacher. Mr. Clark for his great bonus questions that forced you
to make a fool of yourself in front of the class. All the girls P.E.
coaches that made us tough and confident long before girls sports was
accepted as it is today. Thanks

computer graphic oriented and I did not stay up with the technology. I did
volunteer lots of my time with my children’s elementary school in Olney. I am now hired as an Instructional Assistant with the
Montgomery County School System. I have been with Olney Elementary School
these past two years and hopefully will continue to be with them. I am a
