I am not sure how many of us “Peary” people are working in the system (MCPS)... or how many people knew Bruce, but I thought you all should know (and please pass the information on to whomever may have known Bruce) that he was killed in the line of duty on Monday, Feb. 7.  He was a Baltimore County Policeman for the past 12 years.  He is survived by his wife and 5 children between the ages of 2 and 6 (he had triplets).

You may have known this information, but I thought you would want the donation information.  Bruce was a 1982 graduate of Peary.

I called today and donations/cards, etc. can be mailed to:

Future Plans: Degree in Architectural Design

Memorable Teachers: Shirley Ancell, for making learning feel like a vacation and for unleashing my hidden creativity.  Evan Farkas for providing some of the most unconventional classroom experiences I’ve ever known and for allowing hoards of kids to invade her home during yearbook deadlines.  And Whatzername, the Horticulture teacher who I could never make understand that refueling at McD’s was a perfectly acceptable reason for missing class.  What was her name??  That’ll drive me crazy all day...

Other alums I know about? Last I heard (about 2 years ago) was that Lisa Williamson was an award-winning florist in San Antonio.  Crystal Ginn was last known to be living incognito.  Don’t ask.  But I’d love to read the book she REALLY needs to write someday.

I found out about the website from my coworker, Martha Wise, who is a 1975 alumni from Peary HS.  Occupation: Computer Specialist, Spouse: Don Hsia, Children: Brandon, age 12.

Memorable Incidents: I was too shy and quiet to make many friends or participate much in school activities.  I was at Peary for my Junior year and part of my Senior year.  During my Senior year, my medical condition (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy - similar to MS) caused such weakness that I had to finish my Senior year at home.  I do remember how I enjoyed the one-on-one relationship I had with my home-instructor.  I think I was able to learn more because of it.  I can’t remember her name, but I passed with flying colors and was able to receive my diploma!

Since High School: I attended Montgomery College and audited a few courses before landing a job at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD.  While working full-time, I began taking evening courses in Computer Science at Montgomery College.  In 1979, I was selected for the NIH STRIDE program and got married the same year.  As an NIH STRIDE employee/student, I worked part-time at NIH while attending American University full-time.  In 1982 I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from A.U.  My husband & I have traveled to places like California, Nevada, Hawaii, the northeastern states of the U.S., Canada, England, France, Italy, Switzerland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China.  Our son, Brandon, was born in 1987, and we began taking family-oriented vacations to places like New York City, Williamsburg, and Disneyworld.  I am still working at NIH.

Future Plans: Enjoying life one day at a time.  I’m looking forward to my retirement from the Government.  Hope I can last that long!

Memorable Teachers: I don’t remember the names of my teachers, but I appreciated the ones who tried to draw me out of my shell.  They didn’t just ignore me because I was too shy to speak or raise my hand.  Teachers who give equal attention to each and every one of their students are rare, and I applaud them!!

Since my health has deteriorated due to my medical condition, I don’t travel much or attend many functions.  Walking is difficult, so I enjoy staying home with my family, visiting relatives in the DC area, and playing with my young nieces.

Hello Everyone! This is great! I love being able to stay in touch with old friends. After high school I attended Montgomery College in Dental Assisting. I met my husband while in training at Walter Reed. At the time he was a civilian dental assistant. We got married and celebrated our 25th on New Years Eve! We live in Georgetown DE, about 20 minutes from the beach. I love the slower lifestyle and being so close to the beach, which I love. We have three daughters. Melissa-21 is a Senior Nursing student at Towson University. She will graduate in Dec. 2000.  She is an excellent student, making the Dean’s List many times. Laura-18 is a Senior in High School. She also gets great grades (just like their Mom). Her life is field Hockey. She has played Varsity for four years, attended many major camps and has played on a state final team. She was named all-conference in 97, 98 & 99. She was All-State in 98 and 99. She is planning on Attending West Chester University in the fall. She is being recruited for the Division 1 team. We are so proud of her.  Kimberly-15 is a freshman in high school. She also plays field hockey.

I was lucky this year to see two of my daughters playing and scoring to win games on the field at the same time! All my girls are very competitive and super athletes—not at all like me! We have lived her for over 11 years. If anyone comes through Georgetown on their way to Rehoboth, OC or Bethany please call and stop by. I love being able to keep in touch with old dear friends. I am looking forward to the big reunion in June. I hope to see a lot of my former classmates. Bye Janice

Subject:  Update

I found out about the website from the Alumni reunion mailing just received.

Occupation: Playing violin for fun; walking all over NYC, Spouse: Louis, Children: Michael - Age 25, Christina - Age 22, Elizabeth - Age 18

Memorable Incidents: Susan Leslie (Peary ‘65) came home with me after school one day with the school’s Siberian Huskie mascot, “King”.  (Susan’s family took care of “King” at their home, if I remember correctly.)  King was thirsty, so we gave him a drink out of one of our kitchen pots, then put it on top of the stove.  Soon afterwards, my sister, Kathy, came home and decided to cook a hot dog for herself - inadvertently heating up “King’s water” to cook it.  Whoops!  I also remember participating in the powderpuff football game.  Also - during the Cuban missile crisis - having many discussions in our senior political science class about whether or not we were going to get into a nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

Since High School: Graduated in 1967 from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York.  Worked and lived around Washington, D.C. and Arlington, Va. until 1973.  At that time, moved to Madison, New Jersey with my husband, so he could take a job at Bell Laboratories.  Raised three children there.  Moved up here to Hastings-On-Hudson in 1996 (fifteen miles north of New York City) to get a shorter commute because of his job change.  Worked in a bookstore up here for a couple of years.  Children are all grown up; two have graduated from college, the last one enters this fall.  Enjoying playing the violin and taking violin lessons (for fun) and having a great time attending theater, concerts, museums, etc., in New York City.

Future Plans: More of the same (above).  Maybe grandchildren someday? :)

Memorable Teachers: Miss Staney - she taught English, or maybe theater (?)  We had fun doing monologues, etc., in her class.  Mrs. Pearl Richardson - those advanced biology classes and dissecting those cats!  Mr. Wilkins - taught World History, I believe.  He had played football for the Washington Redskins back in the ‘40’s.  When he walked into the room, his shoulders filled the whole doorway!

I attended the Peary reunion in 1983 for Classes of ‘63 and ‘64.
