From:
Suzanne Babich <babich@erols.com>
(did not attend Peary) I
came across this site while I was looking for a recipe for the Scottish
Festival. My sons are members of the Rockville HS Pipe Band. All the
members are well aware of the band’s history. In fact they wear some of
the same uniforms used at Perry in the sixties! These kids were not even
born when the school closing issue came about. They are only trying to
maintain what they see as a really unique way to be part of their school.
The Scottish Festival is held, as it has been for over 30 years on the
first weekend of May, It is in the Gym and Cafeteria at Rockville HS.
These kids really could use some support. Besides the standard Kilt jokes
they are occasionally met with difficulty raising any kinds of funds. It
is a sore issue to many people in the area. Our equipment is wearing out
along with the uniforms. However our fearless leader, Lisa Fraiser who is
a Perry Alumni, works long and hard to make it all click.
If you are looking for any tax deductible donations think of the
Pipe Band. Send us your Giant
and Safeway receipts! These kids are carrying on a tradition for all of
you. We are selling raffle tickets and tickets to the festival. Please
call and we can mail them to you, or even better come by and visit in May.
It would be a great Alumni Evening. We could reserve you a section. Please
pass on the information. Thank you very much. From:

Clarke’s World History class. He
scared me to death, walking around with his ruler and banging it down on
kid’s desks for no reason at all. He
turned out to be my very favorite teacher in all my years at Peary. Other

found out about the website through Niki Giampietro Queen.
Occupation:
housewife, Spouse: Michael, Children: Cristina Noelle age 25 Memorable
Incidents: Teacher strikes, no class trip, dragging the anchor to Dr.

High School: I went to Montgomery College for two years.
Went to Eastern Michigan University for a short stint before I got
married. I had my one and
only child Cristina in 1975 and got divorced. I went back to MC and
received my AA degree in medical assisting.
I worked for several years in the field for a variety of doctors. I
had to quit work because of health problems—lupus and rheumatoid
arthritis. In 1984 I had a devastating car accident in Damascus on the
day that I was to move to Florida. After recovering I moved to Tierra
Verde FL (near St. Petersburg.
I returned to college (Eckerd College) and received my Bachelor degree in
Marine Science. I began
working as a research scientist at the Florida Marine Research Institute
and remained there for five years. I moved on to lab manager for an
environmental and horticultural company.
I was reunited with my senior year boyfriend who was in the Marine
Corps and at Bethesda Naval Hospital after he came back from Viet Nam. We
broke up before I went off to Michigan and 23 years later I got in touch
with him through the VA. We
have now been married for five years and have built a house in southwest
Florida where we are quite happy. My
daughter Cristina is a golfer and manages a golf pro shop at the Country
CLub where she trained and played on during high school.
I make bears for my hobby and sell them at bear shows and by word
of mouth. My husband loves to
collect sharks teeth and we are living in the perfect place for them.
We do a lot of work in the house and the yard to get it to where we
like it. The work is endless, though. Future

having grandchildren. Memorable

(1984) I found out about the website from my sister (Class of ‘79), who e-mailed me about it. Occupation:
High School Math Teacher, Spouse: Divorced,
Children: Judy - 15 years, Robert - 10 years Since
High School: I taught at Sherwood High School and taught and coached
girls’ softball at Wootton High School after graduating from the
University of Maryland. I am
currently teaching high school math at Swanton High School in Swanton,
Ohio. I will graduate from
Bowling Green State University in August 2000 with my Master’s Degree in
Technology Education. I am
raising two beautiful and totally awesome kids and still looking for
“Mr. Right.” Memorable
Teachers: I have to say that I had many terrific teachers while I attended
Peary, but the teachers that I remember the most were Mr. Hill, Mr. Clark,
and Mr. Boyd. Mr. Hill was
the picture of class. He was
an awesome math teacher, and somewhat inspired me to be a high school math
teacher myself. In fact, I use the “Quote of the Day” in my own
classroom. I also learned a
tremendous amount in Mr. Boyd and Mr.
Clark’s classes, not only about history, but about how to have
fun and learn at the same time. Now
that I have been living in the Midwest, and in a completely different
culture, I realize and appreciate the education that I received at Peary
High School. A big “Thank
You!” to all of my high school teachers. Please
let me know the next time that we have a reunion, please.
I couldn’t make it to the 10 year reunion, but I would have loved
to have come to the 15 year one. From:
Dave Thomas <dcthomas@mail.aacc.cc.md.us>
(1977) I
found out about the website from my brother Ken. Occupation:
Physical Therapist Memorable
Incidents: I remember great times with great friends, some I am still in
touch with. Swimming morning
and evenings for 4 years and some great parties after most of the Peary
meets. County championships our senior year!! I remember the gang...and you know who you are!!
Luckily I still see a lot of Mike Dobbs and Cynde Robinson (now
Burgess...congrats Cynde!!) Since
High School: I graduated from UMAB in 82 in Physical Therapy and from UM
with a masters in Health Care Admin in 1992.
I spent 13 years at Washington Adventist Hospital as a PT and then
in Administration. I left the
hospital 3 years ago to teach Physical Therapy at Anne Arundel Community
College in a PT Assistant Program. Last
summer I celebrated my “BIG 4-0” by riding in the Washington DC AIDS
Ride, a 330 mile trip over 4 days to raise monery for AIDS.
It was awesome. If
anyone is interested in this year’s ride, get in touch! Future
Plans: Retire the minute I am able to Memorable
Teachers: Mr. Clark. He
taught much more than history... I credit any success in college to his
teaching style and focus on note writing (who can forget “map day”).

she cracked me up. Carrie
B. Luck (John Brown it!!)... she was awesome! From:
Rick Leith <leith@allamerican.com>
(1972) How I found out about the website? I heard about the website from other alumni. Occupation:
Sales Manager/Part-time Professor of English, Children: Cailean Douglas,
22; Corinne Alison, 18; Brechin Mackenzie, 12. Grandchildren: Not yet. Memorable
Incidents: Having the best girlfriend a guy in high school could ever
want—thanks, Dawn. Being
sent home for wearing jeans. Being
called by Mr. Tile to compete in the state forensic championships the
night before, being completely hammered (left over from the night before),
and winning anyway. Insane
behavior on the class trip to the Bahamas—we should all be dead.
Trying to pick up a beautiful woman on that same trip, who turned
out to be Mr. Boyd’s girlfriend—I can’t remember who told me who she
was, but I’m still pissed about it.
Skipping about 60% of my senior year and being covered by a good
friend who worked in the office. Being
“honored” as senior class “Hotlips.” Since
High School: Staggered from university to university, spending summers at
the beach (hanging with other Peary people—I suddenly had my place to
myself early on when I lived with Doug Ray, Steve Saile, and Steve Sandoe—what
was it, my breath? Also
hanging with Eric, Ray, and LOTS of visitors from home).
Ended up in the Air Force as a Korean linguist, out of the service
and back to school, BA from UMBC, MA from College Park, married, kids,
work, lots of little league, divorce, probably a few too many beers,
dating here and there, and just generally trying to have a good time. Future
Plans: Get the younger two through college, move to a beach somewhere,
climb a tree, cut the soles off my shoes, and learn to play the banjo. Maybe write a book or two while I’m at it. Memorable
Teachers: Meda Mitchell because she was as cute as she could be, and she
put up with my teenage fantasies written in notehand.
Mr. Tile for helping
me to find more self confidence. Mr.
Clarke for always choosing the girl with the shortest skirt to point out
the northern-most cities on the map hanging in the front of his classroom.
Mr. Boyd for encouraging me to take risks and for not getting too
upset about that girlfriend incident in the Bahamas. I’d
love to know where a couple of people are, just to say hey, so if anyone
knows where Doug Ray, Wayne Hayes, Joe Pratt or Dawn Tobiassen are, let me
know. And if any of the other old high school buds is up for a brew
or two, please get in touch. From:
Laurie Robbins <lmrobbins@lucent.com>

Branch Sales Manager, Children: Daughter, Sierra, age 2 ½; one on the
way, due 8/13/00 Memorable
Incidents: Playing on the volleyball and softball teams, getting into the
picture for the year book of various clubs that I really did not belong to
(sorry to those of you I upset my doing that) see 1980 year book for
details. Since
High School: Working in the telecommunications industry. I work for Lucent
Technologies right now. Starting a family and enjoying my life to the
fullest. Future
Plans: Have my second baby in August. Won’t make it to our 20 year
reunion and I am sad about that. Keep working hard to get Lucents stock
price up. I would like to write books and travel. Memorable
Teachers: Ms. Vadala, Mrs. Rosen Does
anyone know how to get a hold of Mike Fitch (1980)? I would love to catch
up with him. From:
Teresa Whitsell Penland <tpenland@mamsi.com>
(1985) I graduated from Wheaton and found out about the website from Melina Mahassel Bates. Occupation:
Executive Assistant to CEO & President, Children:
Samantha Jean Penland age 8, Steven Boyd Penland age 6 Memorable
Incidents: The most memorable incident was the last wrestling match at
Peary High. The bleachers
were shaking - the whole place was rocking - it was thrilling.
My brother - also a Peary Alum - Greg Whitsell (83) was there and
Mark Furda (84). It was the
best time at Peary. Also when George Powell and I took picture of the
Peary Husky on the football field - last game ever played at Peary and we
got it - still have it! Since

can. They go to private
school - thanks to the great job I have I can afford it and they are
adjusting well. Just moved in
with my boyfriend to a new house in Good Hope Estates in Silver Spring.
Very different from living with mom - but loving it. Future
Plans: Hopefully have my kids graduate from Good Counsel and go on to
college and have successful if not happy lives.
Hopefully they will make the right decisions - whatever they do - I
will be proud. Memorable
Teachers: Was too busy experiencing what public school was like to ever
get to like a teacher too well. After
private school - coming to Peary was a different world - good one - but
very different. I made some
good friends and I feel bad I haven’t kept in touch but that will
change. Other
alums I know about? Greg Whitsell - brother - can email me at my address. From:

(1970) I
found out about the website from my brother, Robert (1975).
Occupation: Homemaker. Spouse: William Viney (1970), William’s
Occupation: Marketing for Lexmark Int. Children: Tom..23..Western Kentucky
Graduate (Occupation: Marketing Manager for Typewriters at Lexmark Int.),
Ken..17..Senior in High School (College Plans: Va. Tech.
or Purdue University), Barbie..14..Freshman in High School. Memorable
Incident: Mr. Gibbs production of Oliver. Since
High School: I attended Eastern Kentucky Univ. and graduated from there in
1974 with a degree in Elementary Education.
Bill and I married in November of 1974 and I began using my
teaching degree at home in 1976 when our first child was born.
I was able to spend a great deal of time in our children's’
classrooms with my Elem. Ed. background and although I never choose to
have a classroom of my own, I would like to think that my degree was a
help in guiding our own three children through school.
I have a sneaky suspicion though, that there were probably many
times my kids wished that their mother would go and practice her teaching
skills on someone else. Someday
before senility strikes I hope to hear that they are glad I was home for
them. We spent our first four
years of marriage in Tenn. while Bill was in the Air Force.
We have been in Kentucky for the past 22 years.
A job offer from IBM brought us here and after the Lexington
division was changed to Lexmark we continued to stay.
Our life is pretty standard for families of our day.
It consists of going from one child’s activity to another.
The two younger kids are very involved in competitive swimming
which takes up a great deal of our at home time but has allowed us to do a
lot of fun weekend traveling together.
Bill and I celebrated our 25th Wedding Ann. this year
and that about sums up the last 30 years. Memorable
Teachers: Mr. Gibbs and Mr. Clarke- I wish that my children had more
teachers with the same interest and enthusiasm in teaching that they both
showed. Mr. Clarke’s class was interesting and fun.
He had personal stories of his own to go along with the History
facts and it made the facts that much more realistic.
If I am remembering correctly I believe Mr. Gibbs once told me that
he was a graduate of Transylvania Univ. which is only a short distance
from our home. I think of him
often when I pass that campus. I
remember the long lists of SAT vocabulary words he required that we
learned. His teachings on how to prepare for those college boards lay
dormant in my memory until my own children had them zooming before them.
They were about as overjoyed with what I called, “Mr. Gibbs’
Vocab. Lists” as I was, as a 16 year old. Some day they will appreciate
it and thank me as I now thank him for pushing me to prepare for those
terrible tests. Both of these teachers let their students see a human side
to their character. They were
not just adults that stood in front of a classroom and told us facts to
memorize. They each gave a
personal part of themselves to the school and the students by the extra
curricular activities they each sponsored.
We got to know them as interesting people and then respected them
as someone worth listening to in the classroom. Other
alums I know about? Janet Rice Anderson and Chris Anderson (both are 1970
Grads) From:
Todd Bradford <DirectSuccessInc@aol.com>
(1983) How I found out about the website? Strange Search result quirk - Just Lucky. Occupation:

years as their finance Director and have hung out my own shingle as a
fundraiser for Political candidates and State Republican Parties and
non-profit charities. Memorable

you, and his assistance with Variety shows etc., and Pat because she
treated you like an adult - excuses didn’t matter - Results did. From:
