INTRODUCTION Greetings
Huskies: As we
gather with loved ones during this holiday season, please include the
families of these individuals in your prayers: Carol
Bauer Shattuck, 67, of Potomac, Maryland, passed-away November 19, 1999.
Mrs. Shattuck (Miss Bauer during her years at Peary as the choral
director) died of breast cancer at Bethesda Naval Hospital.
Contributions may be made to the Faith United Methodist Church for
Breast Cancer Research. Further
details, courtesy of Grant Gursky (1965) and the Washington Post, are in
this issue of the newsletter. Tom
Blanchard (1969), passed away on Sunday 11/21 of pancreatic cancer. He is survived by wife Pam Wolz Blanchard (1970).
Tom was laid to rest at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Wednesday 11/24.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County,
P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702. Tom
was the loving father of Melissa Dawn, Kelly Ann, and Jackie Lynn

“James had been ill for a long time, but fought hard.
He always enjoyed reading the monthly online newsletters and always
shared them with me. Good
luck to all of you. This
online newsletter is a wonderful idea.” Floyd

engineer and Public Health Service captain who was an expert at the
Environmental Protection Agency on the disposal of radioactive waste, died

Thoughts are with our classmates we share the sadness ** IN
THE NEWS: Ed Gursky (1965) informs us that Jim Urie, REPHS ‘70, is
an exec with Universal Records, an arm of Universal Studios.
Radio & Records newspaper did an Editor’s Profile Q&A
with Jim in November. The
Washington Post named its Fall All-Met teams on December 16th.
For football, it marks the 60th anniversary of selecting
the DC area’s best players. Ray Wrenn, Sr. was on that first team in 1939.
His two sons Gary and Ray Jr. remember the pride their father took
from being named to that team. Gary
Wrenn is currently the athletic director at Bowie High School and played
Peary Husky football in the sixties. TV/”SNOOPS”:
Reported by Lisa de Moraes of the Washington Post in the November 23rd
edition, “Jessalyn Gilsig (“The Horse Whisperer”) is close to
signing on as a regular on David E. Kelley’s new ABC drama series
“Snoops.” Gilsig will join the cast in mid-January; series co-star
Paula Marshall’s (1982) character is going to be killed off.”
Paula, be sure to let us know what your next project is and when we
can see it. In the meantime,
catch “Snoops” (ABC) with Paula on Sunday nights (before it’s too
late)! A
CAPPELLA CHOIR MEMBERS: Please
see Kathy Anderson Folkes’ article regarding the Alumni Association’s
Homecoming 2000. The
association is looking for all former choir members for its bash next
year! REUNIONS:
Planning continues for next year’s reunions... the classes of
63-65 (joint event, weekend of August 11), 1970 (weekend of July 29), 1975
(TBD), and 1980 (TBD). The search for “missing alumni” is always an arduous,
“thankless” task to those assigned—if you would check-out the
classes’ missing lists and know of a sibling or the whereabouts of a
missing person to inform the class search committees, your assistance
would be appreciated so the “missing” may participate in the
celebrations! Details/plans
of the events are available online and updated as MSO receives the
information from the committees. Also,
Class of 1970 members, remember to check-out your new website at www.peary70.org
maintained by Steve Banks for specific class news and reunion info!
We understand there are a few classmates listed on the 1970 site
who aren’t singed-on to the MSO yet—let’s get ‘em all aboard here
on the Midnight Sun Online as well so they won’t miss-out on any
multi-class event information like the Alumni Association’s Homecoming
2000 or individual articles from their graduating-class alums in the
monthly newsletters! THANK
YOU: Your recent individual, generous financial support of this
project has been much appreciated. All
donations ensure the continuance of the Midnight Sun Online.
The MSO relies solely on voluntary alumni contributions to cover
its operating expenses. To-date,
the MSO has received contributions from 15% of its listed 2,436 classmates
(1963-1986) in its three years of operation.
We anticipate support from the remaining 85% of “online
classmates” soon! Donation
instructions are posted on the website. ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION: Stay tuned for information about upcoming association
events, including the blowout “Homecoming 2000” being held at the
Berman Academy (our building) in June!
Contact Neal Pizzano (1976), npizzano@erols.com,
for more information about the association, its purpose/goals, planned
events, and the membership dues! The
deadline for the first Y2K issue of the Midnight Sun Online is Saturday
January 22nd. Use
the “Article Submission” link on the website to let your classmates
know what you’ve been up to! Happy
Holidays... ..have
a great, safe New Year’s celebration as we ring-in the new year. Bob
