(1979) On
Saturday, December 11, 1999, after a long battle with cancer, Sharron Lee
Laurienzo passed away at the home of her daughter, Jill Laurienzo Coleman
(1981) in New Market, MD. In
addition to Jill, she had 7 other children: Joy (1977), Gay Laurienzo-San
Severino (1979), Jay (1980), Bruce (1982), Brad, Dawn and Claire and many
grandchildren. I
have been a part of this family since September 1976, when Gay and I
entered Peary and have remained friends for nearly 25 years. The
funeral [was] held at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Rockville and burial
at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring. Please
keep this family in your thoughts and prayers as you have done over the
last year. Thank you. From:
Don Hawkins <don.hawkins@bigfoot.com>
(1970) Dear
Friends, I’m
emailing a list of my friends and acquaintances, past and present, today
to share the news of my mother’s passing. My mother, Mary Alice Hawkins,
has gone to her final rest today, Sunday, December 12, 1999.
She was suffering from cancer but, her heart failed and ended her
suffering prior to when the cancer was expected to take her. Thank
goodness her beloved hometown team, the Washington Redskins, have honored
her with a victory today. Who knows, maybe she had a hand in the outcome
herself! This
is not a pleasant email nor the most personal way to impart this kind of
news I know but, there are a variety of folks, spread far and wide, who I
have included in the blind-carbon-copy distribution of this email; And,
this is the easiest and quickest way for me to complete the announcement.
For some recipients of this news, this is the first you’ve heard from me
in awhile, I know. But, as this email will attest, HEY ... I still
have your email address! For others of you, who I am in touch with
regularly, I’ve included you in the same email for the same reason ...
it’s the fastest way to complete the task and I may otherwise be out of
touch with you a bit in the next day or so. Hawk From:

(1975) Hi,
everyone! I had the pleasure
of singing with the A Cappella Choir from ‘73 thru ‘75, under the
direction of Michael Peerless. My
sister, Peg Anderson (‘67), also sang in the choir. I am
working with the Robert E. Peary High School Alumni Association (REPHSAA),
on planning the “Peary Community Homecoming 2000” reunion to include
all 10,800 graduates. This
will be a 3-day event over a weekend (June 16, 17 & 18, 2000), held on
the school premisis. [There
will be a Press Release of all the information and details out soon.] MY
part in this is to contact all Peary Alumni A Cappella Choir members to
get us ALL together to sing at the ceremonies.
If you receive this message, please contact me by e-mail at <klfolkes@hotmail.com>.
On your response, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT “PART” YOU SING/SANG! I
HAVE A FAVOR TO ASK OF YOU. If
you are in contact with anyone who was in the choir, please give them this
message and have them contact me. I
am working on reaching as many choir members as I can through the use of
my own yearbooks, other yearbooks, the MSO and word-of-mouth.
I have a lot of names, but no way to contact them all.
With your help, maybe we can reach choir members we otherwise
wouldn’t have been able to reach. IN
ADDITION, if you have any way of contacting previous Choir Directors (ie:
Larry Phillips or Robert Hubbard), please have them contact me as well.
I have contacted Michael Peerless.
(Our condolences to the family of Carol Bauer Shattuck.
My sister sang under Carol, as well as Larry Phillips.) Thank
you so much for your help, and I really hope you can come celebrate with
us at our special homecoming. Just
think how “glorious” so many voices all together would sound!
Keep your eyes out for all the information in the upcoming Press
Release. This promises to be
a tremendous event!!! Best
wishes for a Blessed Holiday Season, and a healthy, happy & safe New
Year.
HAPPY MILENIUM!!! Yours
fondly, From:

(1979) To
all, as you may have read on the MSO front page, Sharron Laurienzo (mom of
several Peary alums) passed away on December 11 and was laid to rest at
Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Dec. 17. In
memory of Sharron, my parents, siblings as well as my husband and myself
have started the Sharron Lee Laurienzo Memorial Fund as part of the Angels
West-Norris Cancer Center. My
mother, Linda Rosenberg, is the President of the Maryland Chapter.
Sharron Laurienzo was a wonderful woman, mother, friend,
grandmother and all-around great person.
We can think of no other loving tribute to this great woman than to
start this memorial fund. The
donations can be as small as $5 and are fully tax-deductible.
All monies collected go strictly for cancer research and patient
care. A card will be sent to
the family on your behalf from Linda.
When they collect enough funds, a piece of equipment can be
purchased in Sharron’s name. I
am providing the address again: Angels
West-Norris Cancer Center Have
a happy holiday season!! From:

HIGH SCHOOL’S ACTIVE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION: New School Brings Old Memories
To Life by Sarah Breger (Staff Writer) Before
the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy there was the Robert E. Peary High
School. The new building is rich with reminders of the former Peary High
School. Forty years ago a
group of sixth graders were asked to name the school.
Since it is located on Arctic Avenue they decided it should be
named after Robert E. Peary, the man who discovered the North Pole. The
Peary class of ‘68 dedicated a bell tower to the Peary School in honor
of those former students who were killed during the Vietnam War.
The triangular tower in the front of the building points North and
houses the bell from the original USSO Robert E. Peary 132. The bell was
rung to commemerate significant occasions with a designated hammer. In
1984 the Peary school closed due to lack of enrollment.
The old building became home to many different types of people.
Gangs met in the building and homeless individuals gathered in
classrooms and corridors. A few years ago a group of Peary alumni met and decided that
they wanted to restore the building.
Unfortunately they did not have enough money. So when the Hebrew Academy expressed interest in buying the
building they were enthusiastic and began to support the initiative of the
school, often quoting the motto of the old Peary High School “Find a Way
or Make One.” The Peary
Alumni Association, with a membership of over eleven thousand graduates
and teachers, was instrumental in obtaining some lockers and doors for our
new building. To
show its delight in the restoration of the new building the Peary Alumni
Association is planning a festival in June for old and new students alike. There will be a rededication of the bell tower and many more
exciting events including an art show and sport competitions.
The Alumni Association will have a permanant office in the building
when it is completed. From:
