From:
Bruce Shanker <bshanke1@tampabay.rr.com>
(1970) I
found out about the website while searching the web for 30th
year Occupation:
CFO\MIS Manager - Florida Holocaust Museum, Spouse: Linda Memorable
Incidents: Having the AFS student live with my family during our Senior
Year. Also, I have fond
memories of the day a group of us went to OC at the end of our senior
year. The excuses the next day for our sunburns were all quite
clever. Since
High School: After graduating from Peary, I went to the U of Colorado
where I received my degrees in sociology and education.
After failing to obtain a teaching job I went back to school, at
night for 5 years, for my accounting degree.
During this period while I was going to school at night I worked
for a number of local accounting firms.
I took the CPA exam once and passed it.
After working in public accounting for 10 years I started my own
financial planning practice. As
I was building my practice I also got involved with the United Jewish
Appeal in DC and earned their young leadership award winner. About
six years ago, I left the DC area and moved to Tampa, Florida to run a
local community Foundation that I was able to more than double its size.
As of last August, I left the Foundation and became the CFO for the
4th largest Holocaust Museum in the US. In
the late 70’s I dated my current wife for a couple of months.
We went our separate ways and later met again at a local singles
event 13 years later. After
dating again for ten months we decided to marry and move to Florida to
reduce our run ins with traffic and ice storms. Future
Plans: Continue living in Florida while working to create a new tolerance
and educational product using the web. From:
Linda (Eimer) and Dan Hauprich <danlin_hauprich@yahoo.com>
(1979) I
found out about the web-site from Dan’s sister, Jeanne Hauprich, ‘76. Occupations:
Linda - Afterschool Coordinator, Dan - Contractor, Children: Greg age 9,
Dana age 7, Melissa age 5 Since
High School: I work in Parkland Middle School coordinating their after
school and community programs. Dan
is a contractor here in Montgomery Co. From:
Tom Way <way@bcs-inc.com>
(1980) How I
found out about the website? It’s
been so long, I can’t remember. Occupation:
Computer Scientist, Spouse: Laura Kerst-Way, Children: Emma, May 10, 1994
(6 years old), Amelia (“Mellie”), September 4, 1998 (1 ˝ years old),
Grandchildren: George (10), Harriet (10), Bess (14), all cats, and Curly
(1) a goldfish. Memorable
Incidents: “I’m gonna
bounce this chalk of your head.” -Anonymous Throwing
a playing card across the room in Spanish class and having it pierce a
poster on the wall and hang there suspended, much to the amazement of Jeff
Winter (81). Since
High School: Biked the C&O canal with John Warrington, earned a BA in
Film from the University of Maryland, was a morning DJ in Syracuse,
teleprompter operator, comedy writer, producer and director in Hollywood,
professional magician at the Magic Castle, marathon runner (for
“fun”), PhD student in computer science, computer programmer, Internet
entrepreneur, creator of DHMO.org web site, and most importantly, a
husband and a dad. Future
Plans: Finish my PhD, create a job that combines my Hollywood and
high-tech backgrounds, with my wife Laura (who does ALL of the work) have
one more youngster, start a nanotechnology company specializing in
computer software for the emerging molecular nanotechnology industry, move
from our current house because our basement gets wet, own a car made in
the 90’s, structure my life so we can live anywhere we want...
and then live there, work primarily from home, read lots of books,
run until the day I die, live to 140 years old, and most importantly, play
with my wife and daughters every day. Memorable
Teachers: Mr. Gibbs, for the love of the arts (including all of the hard
work involved) that he helped me to learn.
Mr. Boteler, who somehow helped bring into focus for me my previous
11 years of English education. Mrs.
Zimmerman, clearly the most important teacher I have ever had since I’ve
been typing every day, all day, since 1985.
Mr. Hill, but of course, and the many people whose names I never
knew (or don’t now remember) who served up hot lunches, kept the trash
cans emptied, and made sure my file was in order, for generally making
life at Peary a grand experience. Other
alums I know about? John
Warrington (80) was killed in a car accident in December of 1990.
He graduated from Notre Dame in 84, worked for the Air Force in
Dover, Delaware, and then as a Civil Engineer on the New Jersey Turnpike
while attending Law School at Widener University in Delaware.
He was married and divorced. The
only new news I have to report is that I have no new news to report. From:
Brian Twillman <twill@erols.com>
(1972) I
found out about the website from Cable TV Montgomery and the pearyalum.org
site. Occupation:
Organization Development/Human Resources, Spouse: Mary Milne Twillman,
Children: Maura, age 3 years, 3 months (DOB: March 27, 1997), Matthew, age
2 years, 2 months (DOB: April 23rd, 1998) Memorable
Incidents: The Organized Protest March on the Superintendent’s Office
protesting student issues and concerns and our class trip to Paradise
Island in the Bahamas...we returned in short pants and short sleeve shirts
and it was snowing here in Washington.
I think it was April! I
also remember that our Prom was held in Montgomery Mall one year. Since
High School: Graduated from Western Maryland College (1976 -- BA in
Sociology/Social Work and Political Science) and Johns Hopkins University
1981 -- MS in Applied Behavioral Science).
For several years, I worked in a private psychiatric hospital
(Sheppard-Pratt in Baltimore) and community-based mental health programs
(Montgomery House here in Montgomery County and ReVisions, Inc. in
Baltimore County). I was the catalyst and founder of ReVisions, Inc.
It continues to serve over 100 people a day who have been
discharged from local institutions. I then became a full-time independent organization
development consultant and trainer for Fortune 500 companies and numerous
other private and public sector organizations.
Frequently, I would administer the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to
these clients. Currently, I
am employed at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an Organization
Development Specialist and training coordinator in the Office of Water. Future
Plans: To continue to expand the work of psychological type and
personality theory to organizations and individuals.
Our web-site, www.NFJournal.com
is dedicated to ‘creating a global community of compassionate
communicators.’ Memorable
Teachers: Mr. Birmingham (Math teacher at Parkland) because he is now a
member of the family—my youngest brother, Andrew, is married to his
daughter, Gwen. Mr. Hill
because he made Math classes (Algebra, etc.) tolerable.
Furthermore, he carried himself with dignity and class.
Ms. Vadala because she was very dedicated to her students—it
seemed she wanted everyone to read and enjoy important works of
literature... and when we didn’t, she became very emotional and quite a
drama to watch. Being
at Peary during the early 70’s was quite an experience.
I had the kind of personality that was pretty adaptable...some of
my close friends were ‘tried and true’ hippies while others were quite
conservative and straight-laced. With
this variety in my relationships, there was never a dull moment! I
will be unable to attend the homecoming festivities, as I will be with my
parents and other family members celebrating my parents’ 50th
Wedding Anniversary. We will
be celebrating at the Wintergreen Resort in Charlottesville, Va. I
will be urging my three brothers (Kevin - ‘70, Keith - ‘76, and Andrew
- ‘83) to send in their Update forms. I
look forward to reading about how the Peary Homecoming Weekend goes. Hope
everyone has a great time! From:
Judy Casey Edghill <yadayadayada@starpower.net>

That was a time in my life when I got over my shyness.
It was a carefree time and I had some great friends. Since

approach to teaching and true professionalism, he held my attention enough
for me to actually get a “B” in math!

(1979) What
a weekend. My husband and I
attended the concert on Saturday evening and it was a blast.
I did not see any of my fellow alums that night.
However, I had been in Rockville for the week visiting my parents
& ran into Al Comeau (1978) and his family at Mamma Lucia’s in
Olney. I thoroughly enjoyed
seeing the old school transformed & seeing the concert brought tears
to my eyes as I recalled the variety shows and seeing my best friend, Pat
Bryan [deceased, class of ‘78] as a participant.
He would have loved the concert. I
purchased the Alumni cookbook & coffee mug.

(1970) Spouse:

Incidents: The standout incidents/activities for me will always be the
Theatrical productions. From the opening brawl in Romeo and Juliet through
the closing night of Oliver, the outstanding sets and quality of
performance have never been equaled. Vince Gibbs brought an energy to his
productions and a ferocity to his direction that was the envy of many
Montgomery County High Schools and many theaters in general. I also have
clear memories of the classic films he used to show. The
other stuff, the protests, the teachers strike etc pale before those hours
in the Gym prepping and rehearsing. Hanging lights from the rafters and
the incredible elevated platforms from JOB where Mr. Gibbs demonstrated to
us that he could act as well as direct. Mike Tiles Forensics team is the
other clearly defining activity of high school for me. The ability to
think and speak on my feet that those competitions developed has helped me
in all of my careers. Mike brought enthusiasm to the program and the
willingness to take chances and instilled confidence in many of us by
believing we could do it even if we didn’t believe it ourselves. Since
High School: After leaving Peary I went off to college in Colorado and
studied Psychology with a Speech/Theater minor. I did theater and debate
and generally raised hell. During the summers I worked at the Central City
Opera House in Colorado as an Intern.
I got my first professional theater job there when a touring
company from the Royal Shakespeare Company needed an Assistant Stage
Manager for the rest of the tour. I left college and for the next few
years worked as a Stage/Production manager for a number of touring
companies and theaters. When
I finally got tired of being on the road, I took a job with Montgomery
County Public Schools as a Theater Tech first at Springbrook and then at
Paint Branch High Schools while I went back to school at Montgomery
College. I left the school system and joined IBM and became a Techno-Geek
while continuing to satisfy my theater habit by consulting with Paint
Branch and Churchill High Schools as a Technical Director on their
productions. Meanwhile working my way up in IBM from a Field Engineer
(repairman) to a Database Designer/Developer. I left IBM and joined a
computer-consulting firm where I got into e-commerce solutions very early.
After some years of being a Senior Consultant, E-Commerce Curriculum
developer and Technical Instructor (Thanks Mike) I have joined one of my
former customers, SciQuest.Com, as their Chief Architect. I also sit on
the Advisory boards of a couple of other companies. Future
Plans: More of the same (I really do love my work), plus enjoying my wife
and daughters company in raising dogs (5 at present), horses (3), and

Wed, 21 Jun 2000 During
the Community Reunion this past weekend a bunch of us (Donny Carter,
Denise Collier, Chip Longcor, Chris Romano, Denise Rosenfeld Humphries,
Samir Saah, and Chris Sheehy to name a few) from the class of ‘85 were
talking about having a reunion. This
past weekend was a blast with all the classes present and I’m looking
forward to more events in the future with all the classes but also think
it will be great to get our class back together. If
you’d like to help, I’d love to have more volunteers.
The people who volunteered over the weekend, and volunteered me to
take the lead on organizing this event can expect to here from me soon. Please
send me an e-mail of information on anyone missing from the website,
telephone number, e-mail addresses, parents location whatever you have.
At the moment we only have 60 people on line. There were at least 250 in our class. Help me find everyone and watch the newsletter for more
details. If everyone on the
website from our class finds 3 people we should have almost everyone.
(BTW - I already have the contact information for the people listed
above who are not in the e-mail list on the website.) Additionally,
send me ideas for a good date during the second half of next year.
(Yes, I know that will make it our 16th reunion not 15th
but we were an off beat class any way, going through the school closure so
why not.) Sandy From:

(Staff) Hi
Bob, I
want to thank you for your insight and dedication to an idea a few years
ago. The party did not raise
the amount of money Neal and Terry wanted, nor did it see 10,000 former
alumni descend on Peary over the weekend as they had hoped. What
it did was restore the bell and the honor of those whose names it carries
on the tower. What it did was
tell all alumni the Husky head is still in the gym.
What it did was to display the school seal in the gym lobby. What it did was to strengthen the bond between the current
residents of the school and the traditions of the past.
What it did was bring 25 known staff back to the school on Friday
for the dedication (and for 3 of them who started there in 1960 it was
very emotional). What it did
was bring hundreds of students back to their high school where former
staff, young and not so young former students talked about how great it
was to have gone to Peary. The
real purpose in September was to have as many alumni and former staff get
together and celebrate the saving of the school property and to spread the
work about the alumni association. With
the media coverage, just unbelievable, and the event itself, few people in
Montgomery County did not know the physical property of Peary High School
still exists today. Maybe other closed schools somewhere in the country
could bring 40 years back into a weekend but I think not. It
was not just Neal, Terry, and Bob Lau that made this event a success (you
and I know without them there would not have been an event), the event had
parents and grandparents telling their children and grandchildren this is
one of my teachers and this is MY school.
One outstanding quality of the student/teacher experience at Peary
High School is how many still think of the school as MY SCHOOL. Thanks
Bob for allowing me to come face to face with students I taught 40 years
ago and by golly on the same spot on the earth.
I do admit we got older. I
can not speak for all 45 staff, that I know of, that returned but in
talking with most, the experience was not something you could measure in
monetary value, but the trip in human emotion and joy was overwhelming.
Thanks to you and your friends.
I am in your debt. Thanks
again, Edward

(1976), The
Alumni Association would like to thank all of those who helped make this
Grand Party a huge success. From
the volunteers to the attendees, your participation in the weekend’s
festivities proved beyond a shadow of doubt that we “Still” know how
to throw a party! Your
comments made while walking around the grounds of the old school, were
uplifting and rewarding. We
feel a true sense of accomplishment.
Like no other gathering created before, we were able to bring
classmates together with faculty and staff in an unprecedented way.
The recognition of everyone at the alumni breakfast wrote a new
chapter in the book of friendship. Our
opportunity to thank the faculty for what they did for us, and to allow
them to speak out about times remembered was truly a highlight for all to
hear. Our
corps of volunteers were invaluable to the success of a smooth operation. Many gave it their all.
And to that nth degree of dedication, we formed a new club of Elite
People. These volunteers
received the highest award the association could devise for honor and
dedication to serving others, the Peary “P”.
This group will henceforth be known as the “P” Club.
We feel that without their help... well you just wouldn’t have
enjoyed yourself. Shortly we
will post the names of the P Club members on our web page.
Thank them when you get a chance, they deserve it. The
success of the weekend will now move forward with more ideas to plan out.
We welcome all ideas, big and small.
Our relationship with the Hebrew Academy has made it possible to
relive many of our memories and will now create opportunities for more
memories to be created. We
want you to get involved so that we can build a stronger and better
association. Helping each
other out is the name of the game. Let
us know what you see fit as the next function we can work on. We
are planning to hold a membership meeting in the near future.
We will be soliciting people to serve on the board and to fill some
invaluable positions within the association.
Please review the By-laws and come prepared to join us if you can.
You do not have to be located in Maryland to be a member or serve
in a higher capacity. We are
looking into teleconferencing for out of towner’s to make it even easier
to be a part of this organization. The
announcement for the meeting will be posted on the association website as
soon as we pick a date. In
closing, we wish to thank Bob Lau for his assistance in running the
association’s web page along with his undying dedication to the Midnight
Sun Online. Without this
valuable tool he developed, none of this would have ever been possible.
Our family wouldn’t be as close as it is now. Signed, | Back to the Newsletter Selections |
