From: Carol Cotton Hendrix carolh@gateway.net (1964) Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 Subject: Peary Reunion 2000

To the classes of 63, 64 & 65:

Plans for the reunion are well underway and you will be receiving a mailing in a couple of weeks. The date is Columbus Day weekend, October 6-8, 2000. The place is the Marriott Hotel in Gaithersburg. We will be needing some money in advance in order to put a deposit down to reserve the ballroom at the Marriott and to pay for some other expenses that can't wait, and so we are offering a price discount to those who might be willing to pay in advance. We realize that your plans might change between now and then and so if you do pay in advance and then find you have to cancel, we are prepared to refund the full amount for any cancellations received by 9/30/2000 and we will deduct $5 on cancellations after that date. Whether you decide to pay now or later, we would still like you to return the reservation form and the reunion booklet info sheet as soon as possible. We need to have some idea as to how many are coming in order to plan accordingly. We would also like to begin the preparation of the reunion booklet and we need your information.

We have negotiated a good group rate for hotel rooms. It will be $71 a night for a double room. If you indicate on the form that you will be needing a hotel room, we will send you a reservation card which you can mail to the Marriott to secure that group rate. Since the price is so reasonable, we are hoping that even those of you who live in the area may decide to take a room. If we get enough room reservations the Marriott may give us the hospitality suite for free and that would allow us some extra money to use for other things.

The activities for the weekend begin on Friday evening when we will meet in the bar at the Marriott for an informal gathering. There is no cover charge but it will be a cash bar. Saturday morning and afternoon has been left free for you to make your own plans to meet friends or relatives. We hope to have a hospitality suite open and you can use that to meet with friends or just to stop in and see what's happening. Saturday evening begins with a cocktail party, and then there will be a dinner followed by dancing in the ballroom. The dinner will be buffet style with food stations offering a variety that is sure to include something for everyone's tastes. After the dance ends around 1:00 a.m., the hospitality suite will be available for the night owls who want to continue to party on into the wee hours of the morning. On Sunday we are going to visit the school and see what improvements the Hebrew Academy has made. This will be an informal tour and you will be able to just roam the halls, look for your old home room, visit the classroom of a favorite teacher, or just walk around the grounds and remember some of the great times we had during our years there.

The costs are as follows:

Friday night gathering - no charge for admission, cash bar

Saturday evening including cocktail party, dinner, dancing and a reunion booklet

$75/person - payment before 6/1/99 $80/person - payment 6/1/99-12/31/99 $85/person - payment 1/1/2000-8/31/2000 $95/person - payment 9/1/2000-9/30/2000

No reservations accepted after 9/30/2000. No admission at the door without prior reservation. Full refunds for cancellations received by 9/30/2000, $5 deduction for cancellations after 9/30/2000.

Sunday tour of Peary High School - no charge

Reunion Booklet Only (cost + postage) - $5 (for those who can't attend on Sat. but want a booklet mailed to them)

If you have friends in any other classes who would like to join us, they are welcome to purchase a ticket at the same price and we'll also be glad to include them in the booklet. Just tell them to contact one of us and we'll mail them the reservation form.

So watch your mail in the next couple of weeks and please mail in your reservation as soon as you can. We hope to see you at the reunion.

From: Paul Hassler bigdeckguy@aol.com (Faculty) Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 Subject: Fund Raiser

Sorry I couldn't make the fund raiser, but I've wanted to donate for years. Donating online makes it real easy and no excuses should be had. While Peary wasn't my first school to teach at, it was the most memorable. Far too many neat kids, faculty and support staff. Teddy, who started as a janitor at Peary is now working with me at Magruder. We reminisce a lot about the old days. Peary was indeed a unique place to work and none of us will ever forget it. I was only there for a mere 9 years. Had it kept going, I'd still be there, 29 years in total.

I'll never forget the time I had at Peary. While I was a transplant from Pennsylvania, I never felt like an outsider. The Peary community was very similar to what i grew up in. I miss the old school and the atmosphere.

I presently coach at Rockville High School. While much of my allegiance still goes to Magruder Community, I see a lot of the old Peary characteristics in Rockville's kids. They work hard, play hard and don't make excuses or problems when they screw up. The parents support the school and the programs and the kids respond in like.

I spoke to Gay Laurienzo-San Severino on April 4 and inquired about her mother's condition. Sharron Laurienzo had undergone chemotherapy, however, it has given her complications. Hopefully, these complications will be resolved. I also informed Gay about our 20th Class Reunion and told her to look forward to some mail sharing this info.

From: James Buckeridge james.buckeridge@gsfc.nasa.gov (1975) Date: Wed, 14 Apr 1999 Subject: Update

I found out about the website from my brother, Mark ( EMTbuck@aol.com ) class of 77. Occupation: Industrial Specialist, Spouse: Ariane, Children: Colin James age 8, Katherine Ann age 6, Rachel Clare age 6

Memorable Incidents: The one thing that strikes me about those days is how little I remember, and how much I've tried to forget. Looking back, I was such a non-entity while I was in school. There were Grits and Greasers, Jocks and Smokers, even streakers, but I wasn't a part of any group, I didn't do sports, didn't do clubs, didn't do parties. Ah well, I've come out of my shell.

One thing that stands out though, and this might be all in my head, but I remember a small plane making a rather hard landing on the lower field. It used one of the backstops for just that purpose.

Since High School: I enlisted in the Navy in 1976 and spent three of my four year hitch on a destroyer in Pearl Harbor. Hey, somebody had to do it. Often we were tied up along side a frigate, FF1073, the U.S.S Robert E Peary. (Does anyone remember becoming an honorary Plank Owner of this ship? We all got a certificate or something. It was decommissioned in 1992 and sold to Tiawan.) Anyway, visiting Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and the Philippines, not to mention living on Wiakiki Beach showed me what I was missing. I had a great time and did a lot of growing up. Like high school, this is the type of thing that sticks with a person for the rest of their lives.

In 1980, with the help of the GI Bill, and living with Mom and Dad, I started working on an Engineering degree at the University of Maryland. It didn't take long, however, before Calculus showed me who was boss. After a little time off to reflect, I got back to school and graduated in '86 with a B.S. in Industrial Technology. During my senior year at UMD I was involved in a work/study program with the engineering and fabrication divisions at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt. After graduation, I started full time in the Fabrication Management Office at Goddard and have been here ever since. Since 1996 I've been the supervisor of the office.

I consider this to be one of the coolest jobs in the world. What we do is plan out and coordinate the fabrication and assembly of many of satellites and other space flight projects being built here. The most visible project we have is the ongoing repair missions to the Hubble Space Telescope.

My wife Ariane and I were married in 1988 and live with our three kids in Bowie.

Future Plans: I hope to continue working with NASA in some capacity. I'm looking forward to watching my kids grow up.

Memorable Teachers: Paul Hassler: I remember him being tough as nails even 25 years ago. Mr. Courtney, the electriciy/electronics teacher: His class was always a madhouse. When he left the room, we would be throwing things out the windows. Mr. Steel and Mr DeCamp: No reason.
