Page 2 From: Robin Rosenberg Aiscowitz BEEQ15A@prodigy.com (1980) Date: Sun, 27 Sep 1998 Subject: MSO Just a word of thanks for creating this website. Former classmates Carolyn King Chapman (77) and Mike Chapman (77) their children, Brandon and Kyle were severely injured in a fire at Mike's home. Carolyn and Mike are divorced, but Mike and his 2nd wife (name unknown) were hurt. Carolyn's sister Trudy attended PHS for her soph and junior yrs, but the King family moved before Trudy's senior yr. I received this information from Gay Laurienzo San Severino (79) over the summer. It had been heavily publicized by the DC tv media and in the POST newspaper. The family lives in Gaithersburg. Pat Bryan (78) passed away 11 yrs. ago and I want to post a tribute to my best friend. I shared the MSO info with former classmate Gay Laurienzo-San Severino. She and her siblings attended PHS as well. I don't know if they have e-mail access but I can provide their names for you and you can forward the list on. Joy Laurienzo (77), Gay Laurienzo San Severino (79), Jay Laurienzo (80), Jill Laurienzo-Coleman (81), Bruce Laurienzo (82) I am not sure if her other sibs attended Peary, Wheaton or Rockville HS. But those listed above did. I do know that everyone but Gay and Bruce live in MD. Gay is in PA and Bruce in NYC. Thanks again and another personal note: any Peary alumni in the NJ area, perhaps we can connect. I live in Atlantic City. Looking forward to the 10/98 issue of MSO. Regards, Robin L. Rosenberg ********** From: Robin Rosenberg Aiscowitz beeq15a@prodigy.com (1979) Date: Mon, 28 Sep 1998 Subject: Fire & Injuries to Peary Alumni Children I learned this information from fellow classmate Gay Laurienzo San Severino (79). The children of Carolyn King (77) and Mike Chapman (77) were severely burned and injured when their home had been hit by a fire. This happened in Gaithersburg. Carolyn and Mike are no longer married, but Mike's new wife was injured when she jumped from their 2nd floor window. They live in Gaithersburg. This has been reported in the WASHINGTON POST and on the DC television stations. Brandon is 14 and Kyle is 12. If anyone has remained in touch with their families, I am sure they would love to hear from fellow friends. If this news has already been reported, I apologize for not knowing sooner. ********** From: Robert Clarke Robert_Clarke@fc.mcps.k12.md.us (Staff) Date: Mon, 28 Sep 1998 Subject: Bell Tower Plaque Originally small plaques with a single service man's name were added to one side of the bell tower when an active duty death (not just combat) occurred. With the anticipated closure of Peary, some of the families asked if they could have the individual name plate of their family member. My understanding is that they all were then distributed. When later in the move toward closure, the community requested that the bell tower be moved to the Aspen Hill Library by the school system, I thought that it was appropriate that a single memorial plaque should be made listing all the appropriate names known at that time, and that it be put on the bell tower after it was moved. I ran collections during the closure year, collected enough money and had the plaque made. When it looked like the bell tower was not going to be moved until after the closing, the plaque was entrusted to John Horvat, a Peary grad who lived in the community and who was working at Peary at the time as Media Services Technician. After closing, the Navy asked that the U.S.S. Peary ship's bell be returned, and it was. With no bell for the bell tower, the push to have the bell tower moved waned. So, the stripped bell tower is still at the school and the plaque is still in the hands of John Horvat, currently the Media Services Technician at Seneca Valley High School. If it is no longer desireable to move the bell tower, the plaque at least should be placed in a prominent location at the Aspen Hill Library. This is something that the alumni association needs to lobby for through the county government. P.S. - Thanks for the great job! ********** From: Lisa Huntington Padilla LHPadilla@aol.com (1975) Date: Mon, 28 Sep 1998 Subject: georges dear friends just a quick message to let everyone know we are fine. we are lucky to have escaped another hurricane. thank you all for the calls and offers of help. the kids and i escaped to the land of the mouse while antonio stayed to handle the dirty work. ralph the dog, pepper the cat, and t.d. the turtle all went with me to orlando. it was an interesting weekend, needless to say. ********** From: Ed Burlas ebb1000@erols.com (Staff) Date: Tue 29 Oct 1998 Subject: Trophies In regard to athletic trophies-county, state, and most valuable player. The county had no provision to store trophies and the feeling was if left up to the county they would eventually be destroyed or lost. The Aspen Hill Library also had a space problem. It was decided, since it was likely the trophies would be either lost or destroyed in the future, a better action was to give the trophies to someone who had a vested interest in them. Where possible the coach who was coaching at the time the trophies were earned received them, so they could display them in their home. In cases where the we could not contact the former coach one of the most valuable players was contacted to receive the trophies. Sorry to say but the list of these individuals who received the athletic trophies during our closing year has been lost. Records and awards, are not known for much of the school history for the girls sports program as that history was kept separate by the Girls Sports Association until the Women's Sports Program was merged into the Peary High School Athletic Program. As to the other artifacts, drama, student government, band and others I have no idea what was decided. ********** From: Mike Deitchman mdeitchman@olg.com (1968) Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 Subject: Update I found out about this at our 30th reunion.
