From: Phil Trick ptrick@bigfoot.com (1966) Date: Tue, 8 Sep 1998 Subject: Thanks for the web site for Peary HS

I came across the web site while looking at high school band websites. My wife and I are building a site for our daughter's high school band here in Hickory, NC. I attended Peary High School from 1963 through 1965, moving away in the summer between Junior and Senior years. The family move to Florida kept me from returning to visit. Wow! What a shock to find out that the school had closed. But how nice to see a great website which brought back memories from a long way back! It prompted me to pull out my 1965 yearbook and show the old photos to my wife.

By the way, we lived on Camelot St, just around the corner from the school.

Thanks again,

Phil Trick ptrick@bigfoot.com

From: Alyson Berman Holzinger AndrewHolz@aol.com (1982) Date: Wed, 9 Sep 1998 Subject: Hi! Love the Website!

Hi! This is Alyson (Berman) Holzinger from the Class of 1982. I recently learned of the Peary Website and thought I would touch base. I hope some of my old pals will see this and drop me a line sometime!!!

Well, how about the abridged bio since high school ...

After Peary, I spent a couple of years in Maryland, attending Montgomery College. I enjoyed being a member of the college dance company. I also was teaching aerobics.

Then I moved to Northern California for 8 years or so. It is so beautiful there! I went to school for several things... I went through a teacher training program for a neuromuscular mind/body education called the Alexander Technique. I went to school for court reporting (ended up hating the legal field!). I took various courses at Chico State (Never could make up my mind what the HELL I wanted to be "when I grew up"!) I worked at several different types of jobs while going to school. Cocktail waitress, aerobics instructor, secretary, nursing aide for elderly in their homes. I even spent a summer as a blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe. While living in Northern California, I also performed (dancing, singing) in several musical theatre productions with the Chico City Opera.

I then moved to Florida where my folks live now and went to nursing school. (Quit after a year. I LOVED the lectures, but being an overly sensitive person, I used to come home crying after my clinical rounds in the hospital. Can't stand to see people sick! It was too depressing and scary!) I went to school (again!) for medical transcription. I am now doing medical transcription at a clinic in South Florida, and I love it. I think I'm ready to stick with this...(I'm getting too old for this shit! What a flake!)... I told you I could never make up my mind, but I have had so many great experiences, I think it was worth it!

I got married 3 years ago to a wonderful man, Andrew. He is a manager for Broward County in their Parks and Recreation Department. He has recently been thinking about going back to school for his Master's in Psychology. I think he would make a great therapist. He is the most understanding, sensitive man I have ever known. I have a 6-year-old stepdaughter, Stephanie. Andy and I have been trying to have children together. We live in a beautiful house in Deerfield Beach, Florida. I have been enjoying redecorating, but I'm dying to fill the house with little babies! Wish us luck!!! Florida is nice, but I miss California, and all of my close friends there, as well as my close friends up in Maryland.

I guess that's about it. I hope that some of my old pals out there will drop me a line some time!

Best Wishes to All!

Alyson (Berman) Holzinger

Dear Bob:

Thanks for managing the website and e-mail!

I heard about the webpage from my sister, Angela (Yau) Rowe, Class of 83. She is in Chicago now and has been married for 8 years.

I went to Wheaton for my senior year and enjoyed it very much. For college, I went to Cornell, where I froze to death and met my wife, Linda. I came back to Maryland to go to med school at the University of Maryland, and we were married in 1992.

We're the proud parents of Susanna Elizabeth, who is now 7 months old. My parents have since moved to a different part of Rockville, but we are in town quite often.

Occupation: Eye physician and surgeon in DC in practice at the Washington Hospital Center.

Future plans: We are living in Laurel now but are planning to move closer to home.

Memorable teachers: Mr. Boyd comes to mind as a fine teacher of history. Mrs. Hartman was a good coach and we appreciated her effort during lunchtime for our team.

I found out about this from my brothers Steve and Joe - classes of 1971 & 1974. Occupation: Teacher/Furniture Sales, Spouse: Nga (Marie Anne), Children: Caleb Niles - 17, Jessica Leigh - 15, Grandchildren: Whoa! Not so fast!

Memorable Incident: Protests against the Vietnam War

Since High School: I served in the Air Force for 4 years - attended the University of Kentucky in Lexington (bachelors) - attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green (masters) - taught in North Carolina married - have two wonderful children - love Bassett Hounds - at this time am selling furniture for a young, upcoming furniture retailer (Rooms To Go) - for the past 3 years - good money - but look forward to getting back into teaching in the future - would like to travel to a foreign country and teach English with my wife - enjoyable and satisfying experience - did so in 1993 in Vietnam. Have to tell you that I have been wondering what happened to classmates of mine from the 60's.

Future Plans: As I said, continue to sell furniture for a while - may move to Florida or Texas in the future with the company - maybe even Charleston, SC - but in the next five years I hope to return to Asia and teach in a university. Right now I am very much involved in the teenage years of my son and daughter - brings back memories!

Memorable Teachers: Mr. Gibbs * (can't remember his first name) - he taught history and was the soccer coach - I am sure all know whom I speak of. He was a great guy and really the single person that motivated me to become a teacher - I am certified to teach in both Kentucky and in North Carolina - have taught in the Social Studies fields in both states. Mr. Gibbs turned me on to current events of the day and history - its importance to understanding accurately what was happening currently - thanks Mr. Gibbs.

Missing People? I have been missing myself for a number of years.

Comments: Keep me informed please - I'd appreciate it.

From: Al Desmarais adesmara@cnap.navy.mil (1983) Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 Subject: MSO Update

Memorable Incident: No specific incident stands out in particular. My memories are of good friends, great soccer, and good teachers.

Since High School: Lieutenant Commander working in San Diego for the US Navy as Maintenance Planner for USS CARL VINSON. Training for my first Triathlon in October.

Future Plans: Plans include spending time with my wife. Following this tour with the Navy with one in Hawaii. Attaining a Master's Degree in Software Engineering from SMU.

Memorable Teachers: Mr Pine: Dedication to soccer and to his players, Mr Clark: the most influential teacher at Peary.

I found this site on the Internet trying to find out what some of my old teachers and friends were up to. I located it via Mr. Clark's Pipe Band page and am amazed to find such a well maintained site here. It is refreshing to know you are all out there. Reading some of the inputs to last months MSO certainly brought back many fond memories. It is also a relief to know that someone has decided to adopt the old building. The last time I was out there it was a depressing site.

I am a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy stationed in San Diego, CA with my wife Sarah. Since my graduation from Peary, I graduated from the US Naval Academy with a degree in Computer Science and then attended the Navy's Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida. From there I was stationed on the USS MISSISSIPPI a nuclear powered Cruiser and participated in Operation Desert Storm. From there I went to Newport, RI to teach and subsequently met Sarah. She picked me up in a bar actually! She and I then travelled to Seattle, Wa where she worked as an Admin Assistant as I went to sea as the Combat Systems Officer on USS PAUL F FOSTER a Destroyer. I then reported to the Aircraft Carrier USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN as the Main Propulsion Assistant. I am now behind a desk in San Diego waiting for orders to my Executive Officer tour. We hope to move to Hawaii for that one. I hope I haven't bored folks too much babbling about myself. The Navy has given me the opportunity to see the world (as ad! vertised) and meet many great folks. Unfortunately, it has also taken me away from the old home turf. I would love to hear from some '83 folks about how things are going.

Remembering my time at Peary, all of the bad experiences seem to have faded. My favorite memories are of my soccer teammates Sean Logan, Mike Brown, and Bart Fox. Of course there will always be a soft spot in my heart for Nadia Borowski. If anyone know where she is please e-mail me. I would would love to get in touch with her. I would also like to say hello to Ippy Laskaris and Shelley Turner and the rest of the friends I failed to mention. I hope the many teachers I remember are still in touch, Mr Clark, Mr Pine, Ms Tigani, Mr Hill... Hopefully I can reach them too. I hope everyone out there is doing well. I will bore you no longer. Please feel free to e-mail me.
