From: Ken Roseman kenroseman@dclink.com (1969) Date: Sun, 25 Jul 1999 Subject: M.S.O. July 1999

It was great that 5 members of the "Class of '69" (myself, Terry Brooks, David Alde, John Horvat, Marc Gottleib) showed up at the July 21 "Robert E. Peary High School Alumni Association" meeting. There are lots of great activties being planned and I'd like to encourage all of my fellow '69ers to join up.

As a music journalist interested in Anglo-Celtic folk and folk-rock I attended the 26th annual "Virginia Scottish Games & Festival" held in Alexandria, VA on Saturday, July 24. Mackeel, an electric band from Nova Scotia, Canada (complete with bagpipes, fiddle, electric guitar, bass, and drums) played a rockin' and reelin' set of heavy metal sea chanties and lively dance tunes. Clandestine, a quartet from Houston Texas, showed just how powerful an acoustic band can be. With only guitar, percussion (bodhran, congas), fiddle, and bagpipes they made a lot of noise and their hot jigs and reels inspired a few audience members to get up and dance! Fiddle and bagpipes traded off on the main melodies; percussion and guitar formed a dynamic rhythm section. Clandestine are a tight, charismatic, ensemble.

Many traditional pipe bands also appear at the Virginia Scottish Games & festival. In fact, a massed "retreat" featuring all of them was held in the late afternoon and they were very impressive in their full regalia (pipes, drums, kilts, hats, etc. etc.) all marching thru the festival site and lining up out on the Espicopal High School (festival site) field. I also discovered that a number of RPHS pipe band alumni keep playing after high school graduation and are involved with pipe bands throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Yes, RPHS alumni were well represented among the piping and drumming throngs in Alexandria. The "Dunloggin Pipes & Drums," based in Howard County, MD included the following "Huskies": David Ricklis (1967), Marti (Schmitz) Dillon (1978), Mark Frazier (1981); Mike Scott (1980); Steve Sharp (1984); Ed Krintz (1968); and Rob Sauerhoff (1985). Ralph Romano (1984) plays with the "Tidewater Pipes & Drums" (Norfolk, VA). Paula (Porter) Glendenning (1972) pipes with "The City of Washington" Pipe Band" and is a co-editor of "The Voice," "The Official Publication Of The Eastern United States Pipe Band Association." It's great to see that so many alumni are carrying on one of RPHS's proudest traditions. And for myself, it's wonderful to have a really organic connection to RPHS alumni thru music. (Apologies to anyone left out and I hope all of the names and class years are correct.)

An observation: The RPHS alumni and staff are a very diverse group but we've come together and formed this new association. And now a positive relationship is growing between our young alumni assocation and the Hebrew Academy folks. I feel that a lot of great things will come from this partnership. But more importantly, this kind of relationship, which brings together seemingly unrelated groups in common efforts, is an antidote to the conditions which created situations like the Columbine High School disaster.

One more thing: I hope to see everyone from the mighy "class of '69" on October 15 at the Double Tree Hotel in Rockville for our gala 30th reunion!!
