MSO WEB SITE - http://www.pearyhs.org INTRODUCTION Greetings Huskies! Our condolences to the Senseman and Moran families. Gale Senseman Privette's (1966) mom passed away at the end of May. Charles K. Moran, father of Colleen (1972), Tim (1976), Lisa and Lynn (1978), Chuck (1982), and Shelly (1984) passed away in early June. Our thoughts and prayers go out to these alumni families. REMINDER: Please... the Hebrew Academy asked us to stress the fact that our high school building is NOT OPEN to the public yet, and not open to self-initiated tours of the building as one of our bolder alums took. ERRATA: The Class of 1966 was the ONLY Peary class that did the 6-year attendance, 7th-12th grades. Thanks for bringing this to our attention! (Please note that "Fact 2" however, is still valid.... Pommies Rule.) CHAT/LISTSERVE: A reminder that a Majordomo listserv and a 24-hour chat room is available to Peary alumni. Please see the instructions on the on the website on how to access these features. The chat room may be useful for reunion committee meetings -- saves gas and time! Thank you to Steven Mohr (1967) for the chat area, and to Jim Hardman (1976) for configuring the listserv for our use. REUNIONS: The latest information available can be found online for the classes of 1969, 1974, 1979, and 1984. Planning continues for the joint 1963-65 reunion in 2000. The 1969 Reunion has been set for Friday October 15th, 1999 -- more details to follow in this newsletter! CLASS WEBSITE: In addition to the Classes of 1979 and 1984, the Class of 1970 is planning for its own domain. The Classe of 1973 information section on MSO is maintained by Laura Vandevender Collins. The Class of 1970 is now collecting donations towards making this a reality. In the meantime, the Class of 1970 site is being hosted off of Steve Banks' organizational site and the link can be found via MSO in the 1970 Information Section. For information on how to donate towards the 1970 site, contact Ruth Kaneshiro Fujita in Honolulu: happy@slider.net Articles for the next issue of the Midnight Sun Online are due Saturday July 24th. Just returned from Indonesian Borneo on a trip to work with the Orangutan Foundation International (redape@ns.net ; http://www.ns.net/orangutan), environment. While there's lots of talk about saving the rainforest, with that country's political instability has come the open large-scale illegal logging of protected rain forest, which we videotaped and took to the National Park Director. He claimed he could do nothing at the present time. Bribery is rampant: The prospects for the rain forests bleak, as are the chances for many of the endangered animals and plants whose home it is. If you want to see something of what the world had to offer before we took it away, you should quickly go to that part of the wilderness. It is a place of wonder we are stealing from those who will follow us. From: Ross Tuttle (1970)

Memorable Incidents: I don't dwell on them. I do remember judging the difficulty of a repair on a Fiat 600 by the amount of beer consumed in the process. Since High School: Got into recreational drugs until I had a nervous breakdown. Got things back together, jobbed around as a driver until I got into medical equipment repair. Since then I have gone to work as an army civilian, travelling to Nairobi, Rio de Janeiro and other places for them to repair laboratory equipment. I found out about the website by searching AOL's Netfind. Occupation: Manager of Publishing Operations for America Online
Memorable Incidents: I went away to West Virginia in the summer of 10th grade and I worked as a "hired-hand" of sorts and lost weight and grew my hair long. When Junior year started in September...I was somehow "popular" or at least more "popular" than I had ever been before. At least with the hippie types. Odd, but empowering and helped me become who I am today. Since High School: Too many things between '74 and '90. Started working for Prodigy Online service in 90. Moved to AOL in '93 and began one of the most fascinating, rewarding, challenging and cutting edge times of my life. I owe it all to Steve Case :) Future Plans: Finish settling in to my new house and to learn "how-to" stuff. Memorable Teachers: Mr Boteler...a good teacher, a smart and nice guy. I heard out about the website from Paul Bo Kim. Occupation: Attorney,
Memories: Rosalind Lee Hom, Melissa Nutter Prince, Laurie Stahl, Tom Leahy, Christopher Russell, Paul Bo Kim Since High School: I've been playing in North Carolina, getting degrees from Wake Forest and earning a living by practicing law. Future Plans: I plan to keep doing what I've been doing, but own more land to do it. Memorable Teachers: Mr. Clark -- I remember the humorous way he brought history to life in a hot dusty classroom so that I still recall Joan of Arc blowing out the flames and that Garibaldi's army wore red shirts to hide the spaghetti stains. Mr. Gibbs -- I didn't enjoy his class at the time because I thought it was so hard, but a lot of what he taught lasted me through law school. I can hardly watch a play or movie without thinking of how he would critique it. There's a lot to be said for teaching with your own style. Thank you for putting together such a terrific cyber place for us to get together, since the old building now belongs to someone else! From: Christine Rice Johnson (1983)
I have known about the website for awhile. I submitted something awhile ago but wasn't sure I'd keep the e-mail add. Short version- Mom told me about it. Occupation: Homemaker, Spouse: Steve,
Memorable Incidents: Tripping down the stairs in front of my boy friend Todd- I think that started me on the road to class klutz which sticks to this day. Anne Desando and I on the Cheerleading team trying to stay "normal". Walking into Biology- my favorite class- and finding Bibles on the desk before the start of the study of the THEORY of evolution- I chose creation. Going to Choir and finding someone warning of a substitute and turning around to leave. The choir trip to New Hampshire. Walking to school- around here they practically bus you from nextdoor to the school. Taking make up tests in the senior court w/ Sue Peters promising we wouldn't cheat. What? we got the same grade????-- Also taking 1/2 hour to park the car from a Roy's run at lunch w/ Sue and being late to Mrs. Fellows class-- Sorry Mrs. Fellows. Since High School: I haven't done a whole lot. Some of the wonderful things people have done are great to read about. I was accepted into a flight attendant school but got pregnant and had to w/d. I had the baby and gave him to a wonderful family from Colorado. He's 14 now. I married shortly after that to Steve and have been happily married ever since. I worked as a credit card fraud investigator for about 5 years worked w/the postal inspectors, Secret service, Interpol etc. That was great then Britt came along and I decided My children were more important to me and I decided to stay at home. I owned a day care for a time but decided to stop to become a FULL TIME 24/7/365 MOM. I love what I do. Brittnae is 8 now and finishing 2nd grade at Epworth Christian School in Laurel DE (not MD). She has a 97 average- where'd that come from??-- When she was 6 she competed and won the Little Miss Georgetown Contest. She spent a year doing parades and appearances. It was fun for her- Thankfully she doesn't want to do another pagent- I don't think I could handle another one. Brandi is 6 and finishing up her Kindergarten year at Epworth. She hates school and wants to be Homeschooled. What a difference in kids- She also wanted to compete in the Little Miss pageant and has spent this last year as the 1st runner up-- My "unbiased" opinion? She should have won. Any way that was easier for us. Braiden- He's only 3 not much except he is very loving and ornery. Steve has been w/ Delmarva Power (now Conectiv) for 14 years. He likes his job - the benefits are great- there is alot of turmoil in the electric industry w/ the deregulation but he is pretty secure we think. ME?- i mostly stay at home but do cleaning on the side to give me MAD money. I clean in the summers during changeover day at the beach. I oversee a crew that cleans 9 townhomes every Saturday in the summer in Bethany Beach. By the way- Those that come to Bethany for vacation and rent from Wilgus Realtors-- Thanks for helping to pay the kids tuition at school ---HA. OH- the most important thing--- just after I got pregnant w/ Jacob- I gave my Life to the Lord Jesus and I serve him joyfully. I am very active in my church- Abundant Life Church- I sing on the worship team Believe it or not. I have been in contact w/ Meg Winter. She lives and works in Frederick. My Mom is still w/ MCPS she works in the transportation. The "bomb" they blew up that turned out to be a kindergarteners project happened in the lot she works at. My sister (Paula Rice Hait would have been 1976 I think) Graduated finally w/ her diploma in 1998 from night school I have her e-mail if anyone from that year remembers her and wants to contact her she has an awesome testimony. My brother (Eric Rice- I think he would have been class of 1980) He is in Florida works as a roofing subcontractor. He's doing ok. He's not online so no e-mail for him. Future Plans: Become Debt free (so close) so can help others, do what the Lord has called me and my family to do, obtain the forgiveness of the teachers I wronged in school. Not that they remember but I do-- I'm sorry. Memorable Teachers: Mrs. Fellows- her kindness and gentle style. Mrs. Thompson- Her true education- gave us both sides of evolution and creation, even though she had to spend more time on evolution she allowed us to choose-- THANK YOU. Mr. Peerless-- songs from the scriptures both Old and New Covenants- of course I didn't know it at the time till I was reading them and remembered them in song. Mr. Gardner- Cheerleading Sponser Other alums I know about? Meg Winter Lyon, Frederick MD, para legal in a law office in Frederick.- e-mailed her the website add so she could log on I am grateful to those who put their time into keeping our school spirit alive and this website UTD. Future Plans: Hopefully to join Kevin in mission work sometime soon. In the meantime, continue to focus on working and raising our children. From: Janelle Burke-Maris (1974)

I received a note from a former student of Danny Haynos' (1971) that I wanted to pass along to the MSO. It was gratifying to receive it and it proves that even people who are not alumni are accessing our website. I just came across this while doing a search for Prospect Hall HS. Mr. Haynos was my science teacher there in 1981 or so. I always remembered him because he used to sing the songs to us to try and help us remember things for tests. He is one of the teachers that I really remember. I am sorry to hear of his death. Lisa Spring (formerly Alegi)
Dear Lisa, Thank you for writing about your memories of Dan. He was one of my and my husband's dearest friends. We went through high school and part of college with him. He was an usher in our wedding (20 years ago) and we kept in touch over the years. He was certainly one in a million and he is missed every day. If you don't mind, I'd like to submit your note to our monthly newsletter. I'd also like to forward your memories on to his wife, Gretchen. Please let us know and thanks again for the note! Sincerely,

I have been working as a child advocate for many years now. In recent months I have been asked to speak more frequently on the topic of children who kill. Unfortunately, over the last 15 years I have worked with an increasing number of abused children who have, in desperation, killed their abuser. When I spoke recently at the Ohio Attorney Generals annual conference one of the attendees asked what programs were available nationwide. I did not have an answer. If any Peary alumni are aware of any programs in their state or region that addresses the needs of children who have killed in self defense, I would appreciate their contacting me. From: Taina Tommila (1973)

I heard about the website from my sister, Kathy ('75). I graduated from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, IL (10 miles west of Chicago). During that time, I sang with the tour choir, The Kapelle, and in 1969, we traveled around the world. After college, I taught in New York, Chicago, Michigan, and Ohio. I also served as organist for church festivals and conventions. I earned an MA in Teaching in 1983. Since 1997, I am back at Concordia (now University) in a dual program, extending my work in Lutheran Ministry by training to be a Deaconess in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. That program dove tails with the Master of Arts in Religion. As of this summer of 1999, I am completing a one-year deaconess internship at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Matteson, IL and chaplaincy internship at Oak Forest Hospital of Cook County in Oak Forest, IL. After one more class in July, I will be traveling to several sites to research my thesis on Hospital Ministry. Graduation and Consecration is set for May, 2000, God-willing. Greetings to all. The Peary years were a wonderful groundwork for all of us. They will always be a special blessing to me as they served as the launch pad for my ministry in the Church. I will always cherish them. May our Risen Lord remain with all of you. Future Deaconess, Margaret "Peg" Anderson, Class of 1967. From: Eileen Kane (1969)
Memorable Incidents: The time Paul Curry ('67) chained the anchor from the senior court to a post in the library... trying to find flowers for the opening production of "Death of a Salesman" and not daring to return to Mr. Gibbs emptyhanded. I won't admit to where we finally found them! ... and anyone who saw the production will never forget Chris Rafferty as Willie Loman and Lee Robbins as Uncle Ben... I'll never forget listening to Andy Fink sing a solo at some school assembly -- who knew! What a wonderful voice. Is it true that Andy died in Vietnam? Since High School: Actually I never did -- graduate from Peary, that is. I left in my Junior year and graduated from Walter Johnson. Miss Thomas and I had a difference of opinion on whether I should show up and attend classes! I guess we both won! I've done a variety of things since graduation, but have stuck with real estate for a long time -- first got my salesman's license in 1974 and have been a broker since '78. I went back to college at age 41 and expect to finally get my B.S. in the year 2000! Just proves that you're never too old and that miracles really do happen! I'm single and still enjoying it. Future Plans: More of the same. After I finish "THE DEGREE" I'll probably take classes that interest me just for fun. Memorable Teachers: Mrs. Luck ("Well, I guess that's my mistake and your error!"). I never did grasp Geometry, but I can't blame it on Carrie B. She did her best! I remember hearing her announce herself at the doorway to the girls' restroom so that she wouldn't catch anyone smoking -- you could hear the hiss - hiss - hiss of all these cigarettes hitting the toilets!...Mr. Campbell, who didn't make me dissect a frog in Biology... Mr. Gibbs -- I never had him as a teacher, but he was an inspiring man to watch as a director. I think everyone was terrified of him, but he turned out wonderful productions! From: Dean Peters (1977)
As many of you know, the website for Redland Baptist Church has become a consuming obsession for some of us ... especially me. Well, appearently our efforts have been blessed. For those of you who haven't heard. From June 23 through June 30, http://www.redlandbaptist.org Critique of the Week series. This is a weekly series in which experienced designers pick out sites to evaluate and review. Builder.com, for those of you who may not be familiar with that site, is one of the most popular and prestigious e-zines (electronic magazine) for web developers. Anyway, they usually rank the site based on seven key elements on a scale from 1 to 5. Our average score ... a PERFECT 5. Thanks to EVERYONE who's ever helped out with the site. You can read the review http://www.builder.com/Graphics/Critique/ Or for more fun than the law allows, you can read my interview at: http://www.builder.com/Graphics/Critique/062399/interview.html Anyway, read the review, visit the site ... and thanks again for all your support ! The "so fine" "Class of '69" WILL be a having a 30th reunion this year!! Mark your calendars for: Friday, October 15, 1999! We will be at The Doubletree Hotel, 1750 Rockville Pike, Rockville. 8 P.M.-1 A.M. Cost: $65 per person. Watch your mailbox for an envelope from "The Reunion Company" for more information. There may also be semi-official activities for Saturday night and Sunday afternoon-- watch "The Midnight Sun On Line" for details!! We want everyone who wishes so to come; if you have "special needs"-- vegetarian food, wheelchair accessibility, etc. etc., please contact me and we will do our best to accommodate you. Memorabilia: Does anyone have: letter jackets and/or cheerleading outfits (and would you be willing to wear 'em?), old copies of "The Midnight Sun," notebooks, banners, senior banquet program booklet, megaphone, 45 rpm singles, anything else appropriate-- it would be really great to have a nice memorabilia table. We'd also like to have a photo board., so start digging through those old (and new) albums now! The "Reunion" Committee is: Ken Roseman, Jeannette Vinson Dillard, Ardis Cook Hutchins, Wilma Houser Yost, Jeff Stewart. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at the above address. Have a great summer and we'll see all of you in October!! Other news from Ken: There will be a fabulous retro/roots show at Lewie's (6845 Reed St., Bethesda, MD) on July 17 with "The Towering Bouffants" and "The J Street Jumpers." The Bouffants' repertoire of "girl group" and soul/pop classics includes such high school favorites as "Heat Wave," "Dancin in the Streets," "Chain of Fools," "Respect," "Please Mr. Postman," "He's So Fine," and "Mustang Sally." The three "Bouffants" are also a visual treat, with their great hair and amazing fashion sense (think "high school greaserette" meets "thrift shop chic" with a dash of "mod."). "The J Street Jumpers" play an exuberant mix of swing, "jump blues," and other nifty pre-rock'n'roll styles. So come on down and revisit your past (real or imaginary)-- "a splendid time is guaranteed for all!" I've been working on entries for "MUSICHound World" (Visible Ink Press) for the past six months and am pleased to announce that the book will be published in September! ! I wrote about performers from England, Scotland, Canada, continental Europe, and Israel including: Yosefa (Israel), Leahy (Ontario, Canada), Home Service (England), Sorten Muld (Denmark), Peatbog Faeries (Scotland), Horch (Germany), Radio Tarifa (Spain), and Madredeus (Portugal). Between 50 and 100 people contributed to "MUSICHound World," it's going to be a massive tome of around 1300 pages! "MUSICHound World" will be an valuable reference tool for anyone interested in contemporary ethnicly inspired music from around the world. I'll close off this article by saying that around 2 weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the high school graduation of Max Evry, son of one of my closest friends-- Ron Evry (Springbrook, '68), from Woodbridge Senior High School in Virginia. W.S.H.S. is apparently one of the largest high schools in the country with quite a diverse student body, but it seems to be good at nurturing very different kinds of students. But I was also struck by how similar teenagers still are, even with all the social/cultural/poltical changes of the past 30 or so years. I do feel this is a very capable generation, although they'll be dealing with many difficult situations in the years to come. Oh yes, one more thing-- I highly recommend the film "Pleasantville"-- buy or rent it!! From: Patricia "Mickey" Byrne Bryan (1971)
