From: Nan Kerpelman Sarb sarbjd@gte.net (1976) Date: Tue, 23 Dec 1997 Subject: One thing One thing that I have heard from about 5 people that I regularly now e-mail is that it would sure be nice to label who the people are for those of us that haven't seen anyone in over 10 years. Is that possible? nan [Problem is, your webmaster who has CRS, is experiencing the same. If anyone can or would identify some of these people in the recent photos that are online, that would be very helpful!]
Article forwarded from Sam Cohen Sam_Cohen@hp.com (1978) From the Cincinnati Enquirer (date unknown) Subject: Lois Cohen, Class of 1976 Lois Kramer began volunteering when her oldest child entered preschool seven years ago. Now it's a way of life. She has three children in three different schools - and volunteers at each one. Mrs. Kramer, 38, is a chairwoman of the Rockdale Temple Nursery Preschool Committee, where her daughter, Bria, 4, attends. She was room mother at Evendale Elementary last year for 8 year-old Josh's class. She served as chairwoman of the staff appreciation lunch, and helped with other schools activities. She also was classroom helper for 10-year-old Eric's teacher at Robert Lucas Intermediate. The boys are active in sports, which her husband, Marty, coaches, so she spends time helping those activities. "The wide range of community service projects and hands-on volunteer work she does is incredible" said Karen Tochtermannm Montgomery, who met her through the council. "The fact that she juggles three children, running a preschool board, and executive vice president of the National Council of Jewish Women, plus her various activities with the schools, is admirable. Mrs. Kramer said she believes giving enhances life. "I'm a stay-at-home mother, and very committed to family and community. I think there are times when you just need to step up and do what needs to be done."

From: Skip Fitzgerald bradley.fitzgerald@gsa.gov Date: Wed, 24 Dec 1997 Subject: Dr. Dunn, Neal, and You After reading the article on the "old" Central High School in the Washington Post Magazine [12/21/97] with the picture of Dr. Dunn, it's clear why and how Peary was able to develop the traditions that it had. After attending St. Johns H.S. my grandfather eventually graduated from Central sometime between 1916 and 1919. I'm not sure. My dad graduated from Gonzaga in 1951 and it's been a big thrill for him to attend alumni events. Even though we couldn't attend the Christmas Party, I'm glad it was such a success. I hope we can make it to Jed's. Thanks for your effort, time, and support in keeping the Peary spirit alive. Thank Neal, Maureen and the others for their effort. Merry Christmas. Skip

From: Bob Ibach Bobdunk@aol.com (1966) Date: Thu, 25 Dec 1997 Subject: Update [Bob Ibach has been staying extremely busy. Here's an update!] 1. Bayer Aspirin and PGA Tour: For the 4th straight year, I am overseeing a program called "Strokes Against Strokes," that ties in with the PGA TOUR and LPGA TOUR. We have brought together Tom Kite, Bob Murphy and Nancy Lopez as members of the 1998 Team Bayer. When each player makes a birdie during any golf tournament in May, which is National Stroke Awareness Month, Bayer donates $1,000 per birdie to the American Heart Association. In three years, we've raised over $600,000 for the AHA. Each player is directly or indirectly tied in with cardiovascular disease or stroke (mom, dad, grandparents, friend, etc.). The final check presentation will be in the DC area this year, during the Kemper Open in Potomac, MD during the first week of June. 2. Bug Ban. I am part owner of this insect repelling wristband which has done very well the past two years. We have sold over 22 million Bug Bans since May of 1996 and these are now on sale at Wal-mart, Venture, Target, Home Depot, Kroger, True Value and other retail outlets (retail price varies from $2-$3 each). Each Bug Ban keeps away mosquitoes, bees, yellow jackets, etc. The bands are the width of a wrist watch strap and can be worn on the wrist, ankle, attached to your hat or visor or put on a baby stroller, lawnchair, etc. We are beginning to sell the product internationally in 1997 and 1998 and have gotten the product into 46 countries to date. Peary alumns should visit one of our websites for more information: www.bug-ban.com. We have been written up and featured in the July 26th issue of People Magazine, the December issue of Entrepreneur Magazine, Wall Street Journal, CNN-TV mid-day business report, Crain's Business Magazine and my partner, Dino Miliotis, will be on the January 2 Sally Jessy Raphael television show. 3. Also am working on projects for several of my sports clients, including the upcoming Rose Bowl game, the Super Bowl game on January 25 in San Diego, the NCAA Final Four tournament next March and projects for major league baseball during the 1998 season. I've worked with both the Make A Wish Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House charities and tied them in with some of these sports projects. 4. This one would interest Peary grads who are Redskin fans. One of my clients is Michael Gustafson, a famous sports aerial photographer who has photographed over 150 ballparks from a helicopter and turned these shots into beautiful lithographs. Michael photographed the very first game played at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium on September 14 and made it into a limited edition (just 1,000 prints were made) lithograph, full color. Each litho measures 27 X 39 inches and is signed and numbered by Gustafson. They retail for $97 each. As of today, just 212 remain unsold of the 1,000. No. 1 went to the Washington Redskins team and hangs inside the stadium. No. 2 went to the Make A Wish Foundation and is on display at its Rockville headquarters. Gustafson also took the first game played at Camden Yards a few years ago. We can offer Peary grads a special price of $75 if they call the toll free number and order by the end of January. The number is 800-554-0153. Ask for Elisabeth Schrey and tell her they are a Robert E. Peary grad and heard about this through Bob Ibach. That will qualify they for the special price. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Make A Wish Foundation in Rockville. They will make close to $10,000 on this project. That's about it for now. Again, keep up the good work Bob. Here's to a safe and happy holiday and a great 1998 for all of the old Peary alumns!
From: Lisa Salsitz/Talmud afunnygirl@unforgettable.com (1981) (aka Allie Raye) Date: Fri, 26 Dec 1997 Subject: Update How I found out about this? I don't remember..been on so long... Occupation: Actress/writer, Spouse: I have a cat..does that count? Memorable Incident: Crashing my dad's car on prom night. Future Plans: GET MY SITCOM PRODUCED AND ON THE AIR IN 98. She will be visiting me in January and I will send pictures as soon as I get them.
From: Steven Swift Ph.D. swiftx@concentric.net (1984) Date: Fri, 26 Dec 1997 Subject: Update I found out about MSO from my sister Christina (Swift) Dodd (1979). Occupation: Biotechnology R&D Scientist Memorable Incident: I have to say that I really belong to the class of '85, but I graduated early so as not have to transfer when Peary closed. Most of my memories of that time are about things that happened off campus. I remember the school trip to Six Flags in New Jersey with some fondness. I remember going to parties with various people like Billy Frederick and my best friend Dennis Garcias. I seem to recall an Ocean City beach week with John Salah, Chris Romano, and Paul Smoluk that I will always cherish. Then there were the Wednesday night poker games with John Salah, Chris Romano and his brother Ralph, and a few other people (some from the Bagpipe Band). Since High School: Well after graduating from Peary, I went to Montgomery College for a few years on and off. Finally I found my field in biochemistry and transferred to the University of Maryland at Baltimore County. Living around and finally in Baltimore I developed a taste for city living. There is nothing quite like walking through the projects at night to make you feel alive :). I got my Biochemistry B.S. in December 1991. By this time I had caught the science bug in a big way, and decided to get my doctorate. After five years of serious hardcore work I earned my Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology, January 1997. Actually I finished up in December 1996, and took off on a crosscountry roadtrip. I took about 6 weeks to reach San Diego CA, stopping along the way to campout and hike in national parks. Since then I have been working for a small southern California biotech company doing product research and development. Future Plans: Ah. the ever tenuous future...Right now I am looking for an academic internship/post-doctoral position. This means I will be moving soon to ?. Well I'll put in two or three years in at that position and then try for a professorship at a university. Beyond that I plan to travel, buy a home, pick up couple of dogs, get married?, and live. Memorable Teacher: I best remember my history teacher Mr. Clarke for his ability to weave interesting stories from the threads of otherwise drab history. His was the one class I always enjoyed. It would be great to hear from any of my old friends. I'm moving soon, but my email account will still be good.
From: Debbie Beach-Rowalt Owen DOwen6@aol.com (1973) Date: Fri, 26 Dec 1997 Subject: Update I found out about the website from Steve Thomas. Occupation: Domestic Engineer / Taxi Service, Spouse: Joel W. Owen (1973), Children: Jonathan 16-3/4, Ashley 14, Michael & Shannon (Twins) 6-1/2, Grandchildren: "I CERTAINLY HOPE THERE ARE NONE" (At Least not for 10 more years) Memorable Incident: Oh my gosh.......which would be the most memorable.. on or off school grounds???? There were so many how in the world could I pick out just one. I just know that there were so many things going on at ALL times with pranks, skipping, driving (when not old enough... where are you P.B. & E.L.) and what about field parties? I don't know if the "Old Timers" is kicking in or if it is just the C.R.S. (Can't Remember Sh**) Syndrome, but it seems as if it was so long ago, and heck...I can't even remember what I had for dinner tonight. I just know that I had a great deal of fun at the ole R.E.P.H.S. with friends, teachers, and the administration (Ha Ha). No, really never got in big trouble, but it was really fun fooling Mrs Thomas when we could. Since High School: Married my High School Sweetheart, Joel Owen (73) in 1978 after he graduated from the U of Md (AND IF I SAY SO MYSELF, HE'S THE GREATEST). Have had 4 wonderful children (2 at one time) and have enjoyed every second of life that I breathe. As we all know......You never know. Was lucky to be able to stop working in 1991 when our twins were born to tackle the ole "Domestic Engineer" position that everyone has always raved about. Boy oh boy, I sure found out it was alot harder then punching a clock from 8-5, but it sure has been rewarding. Also learned that I don't know how the heck I ever did work with our first 2 children. Future Plans: Taking one day at a time, watching our children GROW like weeds, watching for all the clues of anything and everything (ya know.. been there..done that, can't fool us-actually, I think its jealousy, really miss the ole days). Looking forward to the kids going to college (hopefully on scholarships $$$$) and watching them succeed to their fullest, marry them off (if they wish), enjoy retirement, then maybe the grandkids (lets hope it follows this order), then travel the world and spend our kids' inheritance (if there's anything left after college and weddings). Memorable Teachers: Mr Weinstein, Ms Dawson, Mrs Glass, Mrs Kaye, Mr Bragonier and Mr. Gardner...I know that this is quite a few, but they all really seemed interested in our growth and potental as human beings rather than just "kids" and always seemed to give the message of "never give up....if you want it its there....you just have to go for it."
From: Jim Hinkeldey jhinkeldey@aol.com (1979) Date: Fri, 26 Dec 1997 Subject: a new member of our family On December 20, 1997, my brother Dave (1981) welcomed his son, Jacob Austin into the world. He wighed 5 lbs. 3 oz. For all those who knew him at Peary and could have never pictured him as a parent...well it just goes to show....never say never.

From: Marti Schmitz Dillon bagpipe@erols.com (1978) Date: Sat, 27 Dec 1997 Subject: Update How I found out about the website? My sister Ruth Schmitz Myers (71) showed it to me. Occupation: Medical transcription, piping tutor, secretary/receptionist; Spouse: Bruce; Children: Jenny 12, Gene 9, and Maggie 6 Memorable Incident: The day I arrived at school to find a BUNCH of "for sale" signs on the front lawn. The Scottish Festivals. Pipe Band and Mr. Clarke who, by the way, married my sister Pat. After an eleven break resumed piping with The Dunloggin Pipes and Drums, as well as teaching the beginning pipers at the Rockville High School Pipe Band. My latest claim to fame is playing on two separate occasions on the Don and Mike radio show on WJFK. The more recent performance was on St. Patrick's Day 1997. I have also played at some of the Peary reunions. Future Plans: Celebrating 16 years of marriage with Bruce, raising my children, and competing in the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland. Memorable Teacher: Mr. Clarke, for all of the years with pipe band, and now as a family member. From: Lori Sloan Van Zanten lmvz@aol.com (1978) Date: Sun, 28 Dec 1997 Subject: Update How I found out about all of this? I was at a party and saw Miles & Linda Newman a year ago who told me about the web site. Occupation: manufacturing representative, Spouse: Scott Children: Brittany-8, Carly-6 Memorable Incident: There are several, but I would have to say when I was given a ticket for discharging refuse without the intent on picking it up. I was given a $50.00 ticket for throwing eggs at an old friend's truck that was parked at his new girlfriend's house, (may I add this wasn't his future wife Leslie's house). It was pretty funny because Jim Beck defended me to the police officer who still insisted on ticketing me. I must add that my accomplice Melanie McIntyre Gugliuzza drove the car while I threw the eggs. What was so difficult was that money was very tight for me at that time because I was planning on driving across country with a girlfriend and did so with only $200.00 to my name. At our last reunion, I approached Jim and asked him if he still had egg on his face, because I certainly did. We laughed and it certainly was great seeing him, and I feel doubly blessed to have been able to talk to him before his death a few years later. I still think of Leslie and his children and will always keep them in my prayers. Jim was certainly a gentleman and is greatly missed! Since High School: I have been married as of yesterday for 11 years to a very wonderful, patient, and loving man. I add the patience aspect because anybody who remembers me must realize that is what it would take to be married to me for so long! Scott and I are raising our two daughters Brittany and Carly in a Christian home where they attend a christian school and we are very involved in our church. We both run our businesses out of our home, where we both are manufacturing representatives for several different companies. Scott is on the pool, spa, pond, and irrigation end of the business; while I am on the decorative garden accessories end. We both sell to retailers in the MD, VA, PA, DE, NJ market and love our work. Future Plans: To continually grow in our faith and raise our children as best as we can, (hopefully with the knowledge of life's hard lessons I have picked up along the way). Hope is the expectation of God working for good! Memorable Teachers: I feel all of my teachers did the very best they could for me at that time! And believe me, I needed alot of work! I did run into Linda Perritt Desko from the class of 1968 in Chicago at the National Hardware show this pass summer. We were talking to one another in the bathroom and discovered that we went to the same high school. She is living in Tustin, CA and I have her business information for those who may be looking for her.

Occupation: Homemaker, Spouse: Steve, Children: Christine Michelle 5, James Charles 2, Loren Elizabeth 7 months Memorable Incident: No one incident stands out; mostly hanging with friends, the senior prom and playing in the marching band. Since High School: Got married in 1987; worked in Rockville for a local law firm until I had my second child. Have been home since November 1995 and had my third child in May 1997. From: George Powell law454@tsulaw.edu (1983) Date: Mon, 29 Dec 1997 Subject: Update Hello Fellow Peary Grads. Just a note to say hi. I've been off-line a while. I should be back in swing by the end of this semester. I'm still in law school in Houston and working for Continental Airlines (I'm considering a transfer to Atlanta). I drop in on my parents quite a bit (like right now... I'm using their computer). I'd like to get together with some of you sometime. As soon as I have time to get back on-line, I'll forward my new email address. Hope to talk to you soon. George
From: Diane Herz Herz_D@bls.gov (1983) Date: Tue, 30 Dec 1997 Subject: update How I found out about the Peary website? I was contacted after registering my email and noting Peary as my alum. Memorable Incident: The one I want to put would still incriminate someone....so I'll refrain :-) Since High School: Studied economics and women's studies at the University of Maryland. Got a job with the Department of Labor doing labor economics research. I've kept it 10 years. Good work; Great people. Meanwhile, I've done lots of artistic, political, and personal growth work. I came out as a lesbian in college, even though I had a secret girlfriend in high school. I founded the Department of Labor's gay and lesbian employee group and sit on the board of the organization that represents gay Feds from every department. I had the partner and house in the suburbs, but it wasn't a good match for me, so I'm in the city on my own now and exploring my options again. I'm the happiest I've ever been! I'm also an artist on the side and will be coproducing a video on brain injury survivors in 1998. (I was in a softball accident in 1994 that broke most of the bones in the right side of my face and left me with a few cognitive problems. It's impossible to tell this happened now, as I had a great surgeon and my brain is almost all better.) Future Plans: To curate the "Too Queer" art show in DC in the Spring. To write the story of my Jewish family's experiences (deaths and escapes) in Nazi Germany. To learn German and hopefully spend some time in Berlin once our family repossesses the house that the Nazi's took in 1938! To continue to learn about this amazing world and all its inhabitants. Memorable Teachers: Mr. Hill was incredible. Mr. Clarke and Mr. Boyd for letting us be ourselves and have fun. Mrs. Splinter, for refusing to let me manipulate her and teaching me to write. Missing persons: I'd like to find Rhonda Mandich and Jeanne Miller. | Back to the
