We had a great time, and we enjoyed seeing Dr. Dunn. Dr. Dunn is doing well, although he did lose his wife 3 years ago. His daughter, her husband, and their 3 children live in Frederick County, Maryland. The surprise of the evening was the Rockville HS Pipe Band. Phillip Troup, son of Lorelei Fusco Troup, Class of '73, is a member of the pipeband!!! I am starting my 12th year with Montgomery County Public Schools as a Reading Specialist and this year I am joining the ranks of those trained in Reading Recovery. The bulk of my time is spent doing staff development at the school and county level, and doing demonstration lessons in classrooms. I am also certified in administration, but I prefer to keep my summers for my family. On the homefront, we are searching for colleges for our eldest Kevin, a senior at Paint Branch HS. Brian is a sophomore at Paint Branch HS, and our daughter, Kristen just graduated from Cloverly ES. Kevin's math teacher all through high school has been Charles Markovitz. He taught my sister, Cathy, at Wood Junior High School. In August, our 3 children attend a week of overnight camp near Gettysburg, PA, and my husband, Frank Walker, Northwood '67, and I are celebrating our 20th Anniversary by staying on Broadway. We already have our David Letterman tickets! Yeah! Cathy and I attended the 1st Annual Peary Alumni Holiday Party in December 1997. It was great! Many thanks to Maureen, Bob, Neal and the others who put it together. The Class of 1976 has lots of spirit. Hope more people attend the 2nd holiday party! I am still in touch with my high school friends Kathy Mancusi Karahisar (University Park, MD) and Terry Ludwig Beard (Illinois). I'd love to hear from other old friends: Karla_Walker@fc.mcps.k12.md.us ********** Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 From: Rachel Heller Zelson Rachheller@aol.com (1979) Subject: Newsletter Hi, Peary people! This is Rachel Heller, Class of '79, and I'm so glad to have discovered this terrific Website. I've already caught up with several old friends and paged through back issues and discovered the exciting doings of so many Peary people. It has only been in the last few years that I've truly understood what a great high school we had the privilege to attend. As for me.... after Peary, I went to University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in European History (thank you, Mr. Clarke) and a minor in Urban Studies. My college sweetheart, Michael Zelson, a Philadelphia native, and I married in '85. I had a career in public administration, working as a project manager for the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority for 8 years. My favorite project was the convention center. However, after awhile, the politics and other stuff got to me. Michael (he is a neuropsychologist) and I and daughter Eva, born in 1989, pulled up stakes and moved to Durham, NC . We had another little girl, Leah, in 1994, and then I went back to school, graduating in 1997 with my BSN from UNC-Chapel Hill (Go, Tarheels!). So now I'm a nurse at Duke Hospital, and we live in Carrboro, next to Chapel Hill. The "Research Triangle Park" is a great and growing area. Over the years, I've kept in touch with Paul "Bo" Kim, and here and there with Alan Link and Tom Leahy. Jessica Dunn ('78) and Craig Johnson are new re-discoveries. I would be thrilled to get e-mail from Peary folks, especially Class of '78 and '79. Please write to me at Rachheller@aol.com. MacKay geneis-one@msn.com (Staff) Date: Fri, 17 Jul 1998 Subject: Open Letter to Dr. Dunn Open Letter to Dr. Fred Dunn, As educators I assume we all wonder how we have affected people. What thoughts or ideas we planted, whether they took root, grew, perpetuated themselves, generated, new ideas. We have to occasionally wonder if any of them are still associated with us in somebody's memory. You may remember Ruag, my first born son. I planted a Purple Beech Tree in his honor on the front lawn of Robert E. Peary High School and gave a short speech on it's meaning. I spoke of markers in a man's life. That was just a day or so before I learned that he was afflicted with an extra chromosome giving rise to the conditions known as Downs Syndrome. Four bright and beautiful daughters enriched my family after that. They have and do love their brother. My daughters have left the nest. I still care for my son .... now 36 years of age. That was easier when my wife Carol was alive, but she has to quote Ruag, "gone to heaven" So for seven and a have years I have cared for him .... and as time goes on I appreciate his caring for me, his thoughtful consideration. He has taught me much that is deep and at the core of the meaning of life. This morning, Dr. Dunn, he cooked his oatmeal in the microwave, a significant departure from the stainless stain pot on the gas stove procedure that has been his entrenched and valued routine. "Microwave better", he said. "Take them from where they are to where they can go." were the words that came floating into my mind. Do you remember saying that again and again, Dr. Dunn? "Take them from where they are to where they can go." With Ruag, I count such little bits of progress with such gratitude. Accomplishments that seem so insignificant in a "normal" person take on such great value for us where we live. You can not imagine, Dr. Dunn, how many times the words "Take him from where his is to where he can go." have reminded me of the value of remembering where he is and where he can go rather than frustrating myself with where he could go but for that injured molecule in the centromere of the twenty third chromosome. There is satisfaction is knowing our struggles and accomplishments are all relative to what were, what we are, and what can do with these random factors of life. Thank you, Dr. Fred Dunn. Eugene L. I now have over 5,000 sq. ft. of creative space to help my creative and production staff. We are doing some mighty great things, especially in bioscience and telecommunications. If anyone out there needs the services of Barranca & Associates, I have more rent to pay and sure could use the business. We are 13 years strong and serving a host of impressive clientele. Visit my web site at http://barranca.com. If anyone from Peary wants to come visit, please drop on in. I keep beer in my fridge. I'm doing fine and living in Frederick. My two boys are grown. Future Plans: Hopefully to have all of my bills paid down or off. To be able to have the kind of wedding that I have always dreamed about. Make enough money so that when I am really old, I won't have to worry about it. Memorable Teachers: I remember Mr. Hill, because he compared me to my mother. She graduated from Peary (can't remember when) and she was a student of his. He asked me, "Ms. Toler, I know your mother and she was a really bad student, am I going to have the same problems with you?" I thought that was funny. I also remember Mr. Bragonier. He was teaching about criminology one semester and I was so interested in it, and participated that he asked me if I was going to be a cop when I graduated. I was laughing my butt off. :) Well things are going okay for me so far. I have a good job and my fiance and I are working towards having a proper wedding. My daughter is doing good. My brother David (Kennedy HS, 1974) lives in Richmond and has kept up with Rockville much better than I. He told me about six weeks ago that Peary was no more. I hadn't even know that. Even though I haven't kept up with a blessed soul from my one year at PHS, I was filled with sadness to hearing of the old place's demise. My memories of it are very pleasant and I revere the memories of many of the folks I met there as much as any I've met since. Since Peary, I took a couple of years off from academics and then returned to UVa and got an MFA in theatre, after which I promptly gave up theatre for ten years and worked in advertising, first as a copywriter and later as a graphic artist and creative director for agencies in New York, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Myrtle Beach. In 1983, I realized that I actually hated this and finally put the theatre degree to use, starting a stage and film acting career that continues to this day. I have been blessed enough by God to keep working all this time but, In typical Me fashion, have also taken several side-trips into other things, most notably as a chef. I always loved food and started working in restaurants in 1987, as a line cook, and have since gone on to be a chef with the Second Avenue Bistro, the Tyee Yacht Club, The Bread Company, Planet Hollywood, and the Wolfgang Puck Food Company, all in Seattle. Ever since leaving UVa, as well, I've continued to write, first as a magazine and newspaper features writer (for papers including the Charlotte Observer, the High Point Enterprise, the Greensboro News & Record, the Roanoke Times & World News, and the Seattle Times) I also wrote for the late, great magazine Crawdaddy and for several regional arts magazines in the Southeast. Lately - just yesterday, in fact! - my Seattle agent contracted me for two cookbooks to be published in '99 and '00. The first is half completed and is called "Guy Food for the New Millenium" and the second is tenatively called "South By Northwest". I am just about finished with my first novel, as well, called "Diagonal Mambo", which is going to my agent by September 15th. She claims to have a publisher who is interested. (Something's amiss; It can't be this easy.) I still teach acting, but have taken a two-year sabbatical from performing to be a full-time dad to my wonderful, smart, talented, beautiful, self-motivated, level-headed daughter, Olivia, who is due here to live with her old man in a month. Her presence on the earth is living proof that God is occasionally waaay too benevolent to his lesser creations. I caught two cases of marriage but recovered and am currently happily single, non-dating, and quite celibate for the past six years. I am also healthy as a horse, which is a story in itself, since I almost made your obits mentions in '95, after contracting Beta Strep-A, from where no one knows, and spending seventeen days in a coma and eight weeks in hospital, for two surgeries and enough antibiotics to fill a small swimming pool. The only real reason for mentioning this, here, is that part of the side effects from the scrambled blood chemistry is a random and annoying memory loss that has erased many, many people, places, and events. In looking through the alumni E-mail addresses last month, I was stunned to find that I remembered five whole names from the posted lists. Not even someone who is occasionally as socially inept as I could have spent an entire year at a wonderful, friendly school like Peary and only known FIVE people. I don't know if the rules prohibit this, but any and all contacts from classmates would be most welcome at my street address: 4081 Bluff Lane, NE/Bainbridge Island, WA 98110. My yearbook, I'm ashamed to admit, vanished two decades ago, so I can't even look at pictures to jog my mis-tuned memory. My best greetings and prayers to all Peary grads, and personal kisses to all the '70-'74 grads whom I may have rubbed either elbows with or the wrong way. I am especially anxious to know if anyone has word of Steve Boone ('71) who seems to have relocated to Mars. Also have too-brief memories of Jenny Gregorious, Cecil Booher, Gary King, Roz Rubin, and several others. Thanks to you few and fearless who maintain this wonderful website and as soon as my new Mac is on-line, I'll be seeing you all in cyber-space.
