INTRODUCTION
Hello Huskies:
STARBUCKS: As many of you know by now, 18-year old Aaron Goodrich was one of the victims of the murders at Starbucks in Georgetown July 7th. As you will see in this issue, Aaron is the son and nephew of several Peary alums. Contributions can be sent to: The Memorial Fund, The Employee-Partners of Starbucks, P.O. Box 34067, Mail Stop S-HR2, Attn: Caring Unites Partners, Seattle, WA 98124-1067. This information will remain online indefinitely.
ALUMNI NIGHT AT THE RACES: Congrats to the real winners at this alumni racetrack event held on July 19th at Rosecroft RacewayBarb Dentz Riley and Tim Riley, both from the Class of 1971who went home with their wallets a little fuller! We pigged-out on steaks, orange roughy, crabcakes, beef tenderloin, and hot fudge sundaes. Photos are now online with more coming. This event is scheduled again for fall 1998.
REUNIONS: The reunion season continues with 1967 and 1977's reunion activities, both the weekend of August 8th. Our weekly scheduled happy hour is set for the Silo Inn that Friday to coincide with their activities and help them celebrate. Photos from the classes of 1971 and 1972 reunion weekend (both were held the weekend of June 27th) will be obtained and placed online soon. Class of 1978's 20-Year Reunion is in the planning stages for 1998 and information is now available online, as is information on the Class of 1982's bash in October. Since the Peary and MSO is barely one year old, if you know of other class coordinators and/or reunion chairpersons for other years, please send them to this way so we can assist.
HAPPY HOURS: They continue each weekhope you'll join the rest of us occasionally at these social functions. The locations are scheduled in advance by Neal Pizzano and this information is always available at the website in the Events section along with photos of some our past gatherings and other events.
HOLIDAY GATHERING: Stay tuned for further information on a multi-class Holiday Dinner/Social to be held at The Golden Bull in Gaithersburg in December. Coordinator is Maureen DiFulgo Bladen, mosienon@aol.com. Our get-well wishes to Maureen as well, who recently underwent surgery.
VOLUNTEERS: If you're interested in serving on a Peary Alumni Activities and Events (A&E) Committee, organizing multi-class events and coordinating with specific class reunion activities as well, please contact Neal Pizzano at npizzano@erols.com or Barbara Dentz Riley at timm@erols.com with your interest.
Thank you for your recent financial support of the website and MSO. All of it goes towards the website and the costs of maintaining the site and the newsletter, which is upwards of $125 each month for our Internet link, server fees, permits, supplies, etc. Thanks to you, we will be able to continue our efforts of maintaining and making connections with our former classmates and staff. If you would like to help out, donation instructions are online.
The deadline for the August issue of the MSO is Saturday August 23. We hope you'll share your news with everyone next month!
Bob Lau, Webmaster The Midnight Sun Online Class of 1976
P.S. For those of you with multiple (primary and alternate) e-mail addresses, please let me know it you prefer the newsletter at one or the other, or both, if you haven't done so in the past. There are 700 classmates and staff with us here online, and we receive additions, literally, each day, at all sorts of hours of the day or night. (So, we know who the nightowls are.) The website is also linked from The State of Maryland's website, in addition to all of the major search engines, so more can find us.

I wanted to respond to the e-mail from David Warner ('75) on June 13. I saw a lot of names I recognized in his letter and I wanted to say hello to: John Cannon, Tom Gazenski, Keith Heinrich, John Kotsiras, Doug Lanciano, and Keith Nisson. Many of you I knew since elementary school. I'm Donna (Sale) Vaughan and I'm living in Fairfax, Virginia and work for a software development company (DataFocus). I haven't kept up with anyone from Peary until I came upon its web page. I was thrilled to see pictures of people I haven't thought of in many, many years. I hope all of you are doing well. I have an 18 year old son who just graduated from high school and is going to go to Virginia Tech in the fall and is majoring in Computer Engineering. He even has his own web page. Let me know how you are doing. ;}.

From: Elaine MacConnell Runion (1968) ERunion@aol.com Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 Subject: Update for the July Newsletter
A warm hello to all my fellow Peary High alums! Before I go into my past 29 year update I want to add my thanks to the many that have come before mine to the folks who have put this whole website together. What a wonderful thing you have done! I know it must take incredible amounts of time and energy. Many kudos to you both!!!
So it's been 29 years since I roamed the halls, or danced in the cafeteria, of Peary High! As many of you know I married Dan Runion in 1967 and had my first child, Tina, in March of 68, two months before graduation. Tracy followed close behind in September of 1969. We bought my family home on Loree Lane and lived there until 1976 when we moved to Braddock Heights, MD which is 2 miles west of Frederick. Dan and I separated in 1980 and were divorced a few years later. I think we did well lasting 12 years, though I was amazed to find couples in my class who got married shortly after graduation and are still together! It restored my faith in true love.
In 1982 I decided I had missed going to college so I signed up as a returning "adult" student at UMBC. I can't tell you how scary being a freshman college student is at the ripe old age of 32! Anyway I survived and graduated with a dual degree in 1985 with, much to my surprise a 3.5 average. Not bad for someone who barely made it to high school graduation.
Since then I married my best friend, Fred Burrows, a St. John's High School alum, and a Dentist in Frederick. We bought the house in Braddock Heights from my ex and have lived here ever since. I took a job right out of UMBC at Children's National Medical Center, also known as Children's Hospital. I started out developing the Pediatric Emergency Medical Services Training Program, a pediatric education program for paramedics that became a huge national success. Since then I've been busy climbing the ladder to my current position as the Director of Advocacy and Community Affairs. I have completed all the course work for my Masters Degree from UMCP but haven't finished the last little bit just yet.
As for the family, many of you knew my brother Louis MacConnell, class of 66? I think. He went to Europe and became a rather renown jazz musician. Even cut a few albums. Unfortunetly he died at the young age of 32 in 1981. My dad died in 1974 and my mom just passed away the end of April. I guess they are all together now. I sure do miss them though.
As for Tina and Tracy, Tina has a daughter Kelsey who is 9 years old and Tracy has a daughter who is 22 months old and is also due with her second child in December. Life does go on!!!
Well to close this I want to say I sure am looking forward to our 30 year reunion! Can't believe we are all fast approaching 50! I'd love to hear from all my classmates as well as some of my friends from the year before.
Again, thanks for this great newsletter and Happy Birthday. I think you've been doing this for a year now. Congratulations!!!! Hope to meet you soon at one of the Happy Hours.

From: Beverly Hill Theil (1965) beverlyVT@aol.com Date: Mon, 23 Jun 1997 Subject: school deterioration
I have just looked at the website pictures of Peary High. I am incredibly saddened by the pictures. Especially by the desecration of the stela that was built to honor our dead classmates. For those of you in the later classes it may not have had the same significance that it did to the earlier graduates. Those of us from the early sixties were the first of the baby boomers. We were born during and just after World War II. We were raised by parents who believed in our country and our government. We believed, too. Then came the Viet Nam War.
Reading it in a history book is not the same as living it. Hearing that it tore the country and families apart is not the same as hearing and seeing it. Many families with children at Peary were connected to the government. All the arguments and retoric came down to one thing. Our parents believed the government would never lie, we saw that it was lying. Our parents could not believe the country they fought for was not truthful, but they were not being shot at in the jungle, they were not having their friends die.
The stela was put up so that we would not forget those who would never make it to a reunion. It was put up for people like Ronnie Singleton who listed his ambition in the yearbook as "To let my little light shine." He never got the chance to do that. He was killed in a "training accident" in 1967 when a plane overshot the airstrip and hit the control building he was in. He had been out of high school two years.
So, tonight, when you have a moment, say a prayer for those whose names appear on that stela. For all of those who never had a chance to let their "little light" shine.
[Editor Note: Information on the ceremony and opening of the time capsule that is in the Bell Tower will be posted in the future.]

Married to Mike (just celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary!), with two daughters. Nicole is 15 and Noelle is 12. I am a part-time actress, having worked on 8 motion pictures, a few episodes of the locally filmed "Homicide," and a featured role on an "America's Most Wanted" episode. No, folks, I wasn't being hunted, but played the part of a con woman, that I am pleased to say, was captured two weeks after the airing in Florida!
When I'm not working in the film industry (which is quite often now) I spend my time carpooling (or should I say chauffeuring) my 12 year old and her soccer teammates all around the state and country. Last year we traveled to Minnesota to participate in the USA Cup Tournament (the largest youth soccer tournament in the America's), and brought home the gold! This July we will be going to Pennsylvania for the regional competition, where our girls will be playing for the State of Maryland (having just won their 4th victory in as many years for the state). Our first trip out of the country happens in August as we travel to Ottawa to check out our Canadian competition, and a trip to Amsterdam is scheduled for the Summer of '98. As you can see, I am a true "soccer Mom." My older daughter plays as well, especially indoors, where she has been playing on an adult league for three years now, with her father. She was also one of the leading scorers on her Watkins Mill High School Varsity soccer team. Nicole plays basketball and field hockey as well.
We live in Gaithersburg with our 8 month old german shepherd puppy named Bvca (for all you liqueur connoisseurs, you now know that she was named for that wonderfully delicious treat "Sambvca"). We like to travel, our favorite retreat being Aruba. I would love to hear from anyone out there...please write!

Six months after high school I went into the Navy and before I knew what happened, twenty years had gone by. I retired from a ship in March of 1993 and decided to stay in N. California. Bought a house here in Stockton and work in a local dental laboratory. Here I can go skiing in a couple of hours or go into San Francisco at the drop of a hat or trip off to Yosemite with houseguests.
My favorite teachers were Miss Glass, Mrs Richardson, Miss Dawson, the driver ed teachers, the gym teachers... oh, there are too many to name.

I went on to get a BA in Spanish only to find out it's virtually impossible to find a job with this degree. In 1994 I received my MA in elementary education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I was living in Birmingham because that is where my husband, Carl, is from. Two months after graduation (1994) I found out I was pregnant. I now have a beautiful 20-month old boy who keeps me very busy. His name is Zachary Kyle.
We just moved back to Rockville (6/97) and are staying with my mom until we get settled. I just landed a teaching position at St. John the Evangelist in Silver Spring. I found out about this web page through a man who is an alumnus from 196- and is an educator for Baltimore County Public Schools (I can't recall the name). I'm very excited to see all you are doing to keep Peary alive and hope to be able to make it to some functions. I'll pass the address on to my brother, Matthew German, who is married and living in Florida with his wife, Danielle, and daughter Rachel (2).

One of the victims of the Starbuck's murders was the son of friends of mine who were both classmates (71): Larry Goodrich and Frances Goodrich Block. Their son Aaron was murdered at the Georgetown Starbucks sometime last evening. Frances just lost her mother to cancer recently.
I've heard that a fund will be set up for the family and I will forward that information when it becomes available. This might be something their classmates would be moved to contribute to.

Nice job on the Peary homepage.
Let me know if anyone can find out what the teacher Judith Plows is up to. She taught history at Peary in 1973-1974.
Also, if you can locate Brad John a 1974 graduate that would be nice too. I think he is a designer in New York.
Thanks, nmpyxis@aol.com

Well this is kind of strange, since I am so new to the computer world. Hard to imagine that 3000 miles from home I can keep up with my friends.
I am married to a great partner, Jim, who just retired after 23 years active duty with the NOAA Corp (uniformed branch of the Dept. of Commerce). So we have moved around a bit. My favorite place was Juneau, Alaska for 3 years. Jim is now an engineer with Boeing Co. in the airplane interior division. He seems to like his new place in the world.
We have 3 boys, Jacob-16, Benjamin-10, and Matthew-7. They definitely keep us busy, between camping (when we can), sailing (when it is not raining out here), and school and sports and band concerts....well you have the idea.
We have been in the Seattle area for 2 years now, and I still feel like it is a big adjustment. Although the boys fit right in. Jim is quite happy to be living back here, after such a long time, since he is from the Puget Sound area. Jim never did get used to the heat and humidity of the East Coast, right now I miss it.
I am a nurse with Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound and recently took a new job position within the organization as a Teenage Mother Childbirth Educator and birth place nurse....
My brother and sisters are still in the Maryland area. Beth-Ellen (74?) is married and living in N. Potomac, they have 1 daughter. Steve (78) is living in Odenton, married and he has 2 children. He is a P.G. Police officer. Natalie (82), is single, living in Frederick and also a P.G. Police Officer. So the family is doing great.
Well hello to all the '76ers. I think of you often. Please, let me know if you are ever out here, it is a beautiful place to see.. would love to show you around.

From: Beverly Hill Theil (1965) BeverlyVT@aol.com Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 Subject: Roy Gerela
There were some questions about Roy Gerela (1965) in a previous newsletter. For those who are interested I submit the following, all garnered from football playing cards my sons collected.
Roy played college football for New Mexico State where he ranked seventh in the nation in punting as a senior in 1968, with a 41.6 yard average. Roy had his first professional football year in 1969 when he was drafted #4 with the Houston Oilers. There, as a rookie, he broke George Blanda's single season club record for field goal attempts and field goals made. In 1969 Roy punted 41 times for an average of 40.4 yards. At that time his home was listed as Serrail, Alberta, Canada. In 1971 he was acquired on waiver by the Pittsburgh Steelers and played for the Steelers at least through 1975. In 1975 his home was listed as Port Coquitan, BC, Canada. Roy was a two-time Pro Bowl participant and the first Steeler to score over 100 points, a feat he accomplished twice. He was described as a soccer-style kicker and it was noted that his brother Ted was a star kicker in the Canadian league.
Hope this fills in some of the gaps for you fans.

From: Bob Lau (1976) blau@clark.net Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 Subject: Movie Update
Well, it has certainly been the month in the DC/Baltimore area for feature film production. I worked a couple of days in "For Richer or Poorer" as a reporter. This particularly funny divorce court scene, with Tim Allen, Kirsty Alley, Marla Maples (wow), and Wayne Knight (Seinfeld's "Newman" and Jurrasic Park) was a joy to work on. Being the last two days of shooting in this area, the food was fantasticand being one of the crewperson's birthdays on the last day, shooting was interrupted by a professional stripper for this fellow. It was odd, but fun, to see this happening in the middle of shooting a scene, especially in the Baltimore Circuit Court courtroom. The feature moved production to NYC and finished-up on July 13th.
Got a call to work in another Bruce Willis flick called "Armagedon" but retrieved my messages too late to take the work (lesson learned). I had previously worked in a Willis movie called "In Country" where I met and had the opportunity to chat with Demi Moore (right after they had their first child), and also "12 Monkeys." Also had to turn down work in an Ameritech long distance commercial recently due to a conflict in schedule.
Both Kristy and I had the opportunity to work in "Species 2" scenes as well, with James Cromwell, the "Babe" farmer, who I worked with previously in "The People vs. Larry Flynt" though the shots they used of me were in scenes with Woody Harrelson. Nice man, Mr. Cromwelldown-to-earth and not "above" everyone else on the set. I played a reporter, waiter, and a secret service man in different scenessee if you can spot the discontinuity when it comes out! Kristy also played a reporter in this and had several close-ups filmed in a news conference scene with the "Mars Mission Crew."
We're both working again next week, receiving a call just moments ago from DreamWorks, Steven Speilberg's company, for work in "Deep Impact" (I believe another asteroid disaster-type flick) both playing media types again in scenes at The White House, and I will be working later in the week in a HBO documentary called "From Earth to the Moon" being produced by Tom Hanks and Ron Howard. This particular scene for the documentary is set in the sixtiesthank goodness they're also providing the wardrobe since I was just a little kid back then, unlike some of you ;-) "Part" of the reason that production is so heavy here this summer may be that the Washington Monument is scheduled for renovation beginning in 1998, so they need to get their shots before the scaffolding goes up.
Oh, "Contact".... well, the scenes I was most likely to be prominent in, I wasn'tthe scenes where I thought I'd never show up, I did. I did make one of the trailers too, but heck, it all pays the same either way. I'm in the media "rush" after her experience and after the Senate Hearing scene with James Woods, when they get close to the bottom of the "Capitol" steps. Still never saw Howard Stern's "Private Parts" where I'm told I appear in the transvestites scene (wonderful) in front of the White House (thanks Kevin Brooks, Class of 76, for providing this info that I made the cut), and have yet to see whether I made it into the final cut for "Air Force One" (due out soon) and "Washington Square" (due out this fall). Still waiting on residual payments from work in "America's Most Wanted" and "Homicide" last season. Thank you to reruns, overseas airing, and cable! Hey, Diana Taylor Keselica, stop working the same shows as me! Are you following me around or vice versa?
I'm currently working on securing a reappearance in next season's "Homicide" that just began production for the fall season this week. Two of the "regular" cast members that you may be familiar with, if you watch the series, are no longer with the show this seasonthat makes more room for work for the rest of us!

After graduation from RPHS, I attended Boston University and received a BA degree. While at BU, I served as a disc jockey on the student-run AM radio station and got a taste for the music business. So for over twenty years I have been a freelance music journalist, and have done recording and performance reviews, artist profiles, and columns for a number of magazines and newspapers including "JAZZIZ," "Tower Records' PULSE," "CMJ New Music Report," "The Boston Phoenix," and others. I've also done CD booklet notes for "A Celtic Collection," a sampler of contemporary Celtic-oriented performers released by the "Putumayo World Music" label and for "Weather Out The Storm," the third album by Newfoundland folk-rock band, Figgy Duff. Presently, I contribute event previews to "Washington City Paper" and write recording reviews for the noted folk music magazine "Sing Out." I'm also involved with a fascinating project called "The Book of Ballads and Sagas," a comic book series featuring adaptations of traditional folk ballads. I look up in-print recordings of the ballads and write a paragraph about the musicians and singers who recorded them. I'd like everyone to know that a trade paperback edition of material collected from the first four issues of "The Book of Ballads and Sagas" has just been published (and is available at all well-stocked comic book shops!).
If you haven't realized it by now, I am a major fan of Anglo-Celtic folk and folk-rock (Steeleye Span, Richard Thompson, Fairport Convention, Billy Bragg, Oysterband, Capercaillie, others) and have traveled to England four times to catch his favorite performers live on their home turf!
As many of you may know, freelance journalism won't pay a lot of bills. So in addition to that, I work four nights a week as a fund raiser for the non-profit organization "Peace Action."
And if you're wondering, I remain an indomitable non-conformist and eccentric who's never been married and have no children. (I do, however, have a nephewSam Bieber (12) and a niece, Elizabeth Bieber (9) of whom I am proud.) I live in a funky apartment in north Arlington, VA filled with over 1,000 CDs, 2,000 vinyl LPs, comic books, and other pop culture artifacts.
Ironically, I am not yet "on-line," but a friend is working on a website for me. But for now, if you want to reach me, you gotta do it the old-fashioned way, by mail at: P.O. Box 744, Arlington, VA 22216.
I would like to publicly thank Neal Pizzano and Bob Lau for all the work they've done with the website, newsletter, Friday Night Gatherings, and other activities.
Always remember to "find a way or make one"a thought appropriate for many life situations.
