Use the "Sign-up/Update" link on the MSO main menu to ensure your mailing address is correct in respective-class records. The class update forms online are submitted directly to your class organizers. Check the class "missing persons" listings - some of your siblings are missing! We know you know where some of these people are. Each class's missing list is linked from the respective class's Information Section. Some of your siblings also need to update us with new e-mail addresses (check the master "alumni list" - these listings are updated at least once daily, because it's inevitable that a day won't go by anymore when one of you 4,600+ folks won't have an update or change for us!) - and always, let those classmates know about their reunion plans... those who may not know about, or be aboard the MSO (yet) - Thanks! THANK YOU to our recent MSO Supporters: Unfortunately, there were no one-time donations received in the past month. However, we would like to say thanks to Frank Minogue (1978), who recently joined the ranks for recurring donations with our other pledges: Andy Harper (1967), Karen Weinberger Vilt (1980), Tracy Baker (1981) & Don Turner (1980), Ken Roseman (1969), Lynda Hench Donaldson (1966), Mike Parlon (1977), Sharon Marcus (1970), Lisa Beebe (1976), Bob Winegard (1975), Judy Pratt Rossiter (1977), Cynde Robinson Burgess (1977), and Anita Greene Bush (1975). To see how to initiate a one-time donation or a pledge (automatically charged to your credit card, monthly or quarterly), click on "Donations" at MSO. Or directly (on a secure server), see the options at https://id267.securedata.net/pearyhs/donation.htm - you can do this online or by fax or by snail mail (checks). Thank you for your consideration of support of MSO, which will celebrate its 10-year anniversary this August. Also visit PEARYGEAR.com, operated by Stuart Goldman (1981), to order all kinds of items like shirts, hats, mugs with the Peary Huskies logo. Visit PearyGear.com for all your Pearyphernalia needs and check it often for new items and occasional coupon codes for discounts. Proceeds also help benefit MSO. Contact Stuart at pearygear@comcast.net for bulk sales ... for your reunion! NOTE: I do not know who the MSO supporters were/are from the Vegas "welcome sign" sales since they were handled through a third party on behalf of MSO and The Nevada Cancer Institute. All we know is that we received the proceeds. If you purchased one, we'd like to give you the credit on our page of supporters - please let me know: blau@viawest.net Some MSO Facts: Did you know there is a listing of "Alumni Links" on MSO, with many of your old friends' current businesses and personal pages linked? It's a great resource if you need.. almost anything! e.g. visit Eugene MacKay's (Staff) new site, or Randy McClement's (1974) Bagel and Deli "The Market" in Frederick, or find a alumni realtor somewhere around the country where you may be relocating. Some alumni-owned businesses might swing you a discount on products and services! Also, "Births" and "Alumni Kids" news in the Husky Pups section... e.g. The Vineys (Bill & Debbie Hricko, 1970) daughter's news - see their article in this newsletter, and George Powell's (1983) daughter's photo online - now 6 months old! We also urge you to visit the site often - www.pearyhs.org - in-between newsletters... although we try the best we can to distribute specific timely announcements (i.e. unfortunately, usually funeral arrangements information), it is sometimes impossible to do this in time. At most, we can typcially only spend about 4 hours/day on MSO activities. There are some back-burner/pending items (music, yearbooks, license plates, and other items and ideas of interest to alumni)... you haven't been forgotten - you know who you are - we may take a while sometimes, but we don't forget! Watch for a photo of Ed Burlas (Staff 1960-1984) and his wife Joyce on the site shortly - they are visiting in Las Vegas as this newsletter is being typed. That is, this nightowl is actually meeting-up with them on The Strip for breakfast, with Duane Black (Staff 1968-70, 1974-1984) and his wife Jacque (who also live here in the valley)... the Blacks will give me a couple of wake-up calls to make sure I don't oversleep (I might just stay up overnight at this point - not an unusual habit for me as many of you know). Egads. Besides, each party has seen me in "zombie mode" in the past already (so, they won't be too shocked). Happy spring and St. Patrick's Day to all, Bob Lau, Editor/Webmaster, blau@viawest.net (Class of '76, Las Vegas NV) The Midnight Sun Online - Robert E. Peary High School P.S. If you wish to directly reply or comment, please don't quote the entire newsletter back. Create a new e-mail to blau@viawest.net, and always include your grad year and name in the correspondence. Please USE THE FORMS online for e-mail, mailing address changes and updates so they're directed to the appropriate graduating class for records. ********************************************************************* LETTER TO MR. GIBBS - From Will McNaughten Loving, Class of 1974, will@dedicationtechnologies.com: Dear Mr. Gibbs, I want to express my thanks to you for taking the time to make the recording of "Of Mice and Men," which I recently had the pleasure of listening to. I was alerted to the fact that the recording existed by Freda Curchack (Marver) and have since passed it on to Liz Loftus (Singer), all of us from the Peary class of 1974. From the moment Lenny says, "I like beans with ketchup", I was transported back to that unexpected and fascinating week in which you read the story. I was mesmerized listening to the tape, not just because it was a window to my past, but because your interpretation of the characters and their voices is so compelling. Hearing the story again also made me wonder how classroom discussions of the issues raised in it would differ today. How would students, parents and administrators today respond to the issues of morality, racism and sexism? Does anyone have the courage to tackle such issues in classrooms these days by reading a book like this? While I expect that you do not remember me - I was not what you would call an outstanding English student - your English and Humanities classes, your direction of the Drama Club plays, your wall of B&W glossies, and your after school movie showings did make a deep impression on me. Though I struggled with writing, I DID take in the paper writing concepts and frameworks you presented and they formed the basis for later writing that I did. I very clearly recall your standard example of a introductory sentence, "Lenny and George were depraved, deprived and depressed." You said it often enough that it became quite humorous. Though I struggled with and never really came to appreciate Faulkner (and I suspect I'm not alone in that!), I did enjoy Steinbeck and went on to read other Steinbeck books during and after high school. The Humanities class and after school films introduced me to forms of art and a broader range of cultural experience than I likely otherwise would have had. I recall specifically two instances, one watching Garbo in Queen Christina, and the other watching Fontein and Nureyev, in Romeo & Juliet, when you stopped the projector and replayed the same scene several times for us to take in and appreciate what was happening... Garbo's languid pose, Margot Fontein's arm drifting down. You helped us appreciate these things by showing us the things you appreciated and taking the time to look closely at them. My three years at Peary were a very difficult time in my life. I was wrestling with depression, struggling with an abusive mother and alcoholic father and generally feeling quite numb. And, English and writing were particularly difficult for me! I did, however, learn a great deal from you and benefited from my participation in your classes and other activities, including and most especially the Drama club presentations of "Long Day's Journey Into Night" and "The Little Foxes." I particularly recall the post-performance sessions with you and the rest of the cast and crew. It was a peculiar and precious (to us) moment there when you let down the normal teacher/student formality a bit more than usual to discuss how it had gone that night. So, all of this is to simply say, "Thank you." You did what teachers hope to do, make an impression, make a difference. You were not afraid to be yourself as a teacher and as an individual, and that in itself is an inspiration. You shared what you loved and cared about and it got passed on to many of us who sat in your classroom. Sincerely, Will Loving (known at Peary as "Bill McNaughten") Amherst, MA [MSO note: Mr. Gibbs remains inaccessible via MSO, but those in touch with him always let him know what's up!] Additionally... until MSO has a chance check its own space and archiving of large files, Will has graciously made available, the 6 chapters of Mr. Gibbs' "Of Mice and Men" (MP3 files), for downloading on his server temporarily at http://dedicationtechnologies.com/oman/ - thanks, Will! ********** From: Crystal Ashbrook Morrill (1981) Date: Sat, 4 Feb 2006 Subject: Update Website - www.thepropervillains.com (My husband's band. She represented the University at the 2006 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships held at Ohio State in February and became the first Big Ten Swimming Champion in 24 years for the University of Illinois. Her 100 Freestyle time of 49.06 has given her an automatic invite to the NCAA Division 1 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, GA in March. She holds the University of Illinois school records in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle and took 16th last year at NCAA's in the 100 freestyle. Her 2006 Big Ten Championship time broke the Ohio State pool record and gave her the 4th fastest time ever swam in Big Ten league history. I am getting a tad overwhelmed with trying to keep up with where they are and emails, so I decided a page would be the best! It's a good overwhelmingness, tho!! I also want to thank you all for the emails I get and still getting regarding help on "Chase the Rain," my feature film! Locations, crew, etc. Wow....I just might make the entire film in Rockville. Go figure!! Oh, also, thank you for the donations! Your kindness is very touching. I'm officially in pre-production and it really is a wonderful feeling to know my dream project will be made!! It's a long process but I'm going in the best direction! Also, since I am the lead in the film, I've started the weight loss process. I'm actually quite proud of myself for doing this. I've lost 40 pounds since January 9th. No, I didn't cut off my head. Haha. I need to drop about 75 total before principal photography begins. If anyone knows a personal trainer that lives in Southern California, I'd love to have a referral. It feels great to be able to be active again! Why am I babbling about all this? I guess because it's my little accomplishment I have to share. The joke in my family is my sister gives my parents babies (3 boys and done!) and I give them movies. So....there ya go. Here are the film updates. "Jewz N the Hood" ( go ahead and laff!!) has been accepted into The Other Venice Film Festival, The LA Jewish Film Festival, MethodFest in Calabasas, CA and The World of Comedy Film Fesival in Toronto. http://www.worldcomedyfilmfest.com/full_schedule.htm I am the Producer on that little film. It's already been to two other festivals and was well rec'd. Next, another film I produced,"Queer Eye for the Homeless Guy" has just recently been accepted into MethodFest as well. Also, "The Last Great Infomercial" has been accepted into the The World of Comedy Film Festival. It's my first time having two films in one festival. I play a midwest housewife in that film. It will be great exposure. Unfortunately, I'm going to be in MA and NYC during the time of the festival so I won't be there. But, if any of you live in Toronto, check out my films if you can :) Guaranteed a laugh or three. My newest film, "A Perfect Life" the 10 minute musical comedy is just now making it's festival rounds. We are waiting to hear from two festivals and will post it on my site as soon as it's official. (March 1st, actually.) I co-wrote, produced and star in that one. And, yes, I sing. I know.....I scared myself too!! There are a lot of fun pictures on the site including me in a bathtub! hahahha Oh gawd, don't show anyone with a weak heart! Also, I have recently finished a film called "Carts." It will be playing nationwide soon. The release date is sometime in May or June. I am a biker chick and again, quite the scary one. Okay, that's it for now. Thank you all for all of your kind words of encouragement and support! I'm planning on being home for the reunion in June. I can't wait to see everyone. I'll be in touch and check out www.allieraye.com when you get a chance. The links will tell you where to go to get information :) And, if any of you are planning on visiting LA, CA anytime soon, let me know. I'd love to meet up for dinner or drinks!! Bye for now. Even more startling, breast cancer kills approximately one woman every 14 minutes, robbing us of our mothers and grandmothers, our sisters and aunts, cousins and best friends. My name is Jennifer Riley and I am the daughter of Barbara Dentz Riley and Timothy Riley (Class of 1971). This year I will be doing the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer along with seven of my friends. Four of these friends are cousins who will be participating in the walk to honor their Grandmother who just last month dealt with her second bout of breast cancer. I will be walking 39.3 miles over 2 days in Washington, D.C. I have also committed to raise $1800 in order to walk. The race is April 29th so I don't have a lot of time to waste. You can simply make a donation online by going to avonwalk.com. From there: 1. Click Donate, 2. Click Support a Participant, 3. Enter my name: Jennifer Riley, 4. You'll be directed to My Page where you can "Click here to support me" Even a $5 donation would be so helpful. Maybe you've never personally known anyone touched by breast cancer. If that's the case, you also know that you are very fortunate, and that it's likely that one day that will change. A staggering 1 in 9 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women right now, and the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55. Every woman is at risk, because we don't know to prevent it.
