************************************************************ MIDNIGHT SUN ONLINE The Online Newsletter for Robert E. Peary High School Alumni Volume 10, Number 6 January 2006 MSO WEBSITE - http://www.pearyhs.org ************************************************************ INTRODUCTION Greetings Huskies, In this issue... Intro (general news items and reunion info), Classmate Updates, Quick Takes, Obituary/Condolence Notices. There are many "sad news" items since the last newsletter, unfortunately. Within the Peary alumni "community," we party and celebrate together, but we also mourn together. We urge alums to visit www.pearyhs.org occasionally for timely news items posted between the monthly newsletters. THANK YOU: Kudos and thanks to Dennis Judge (1972) who retired as a Colonel from the Marine Corps on January 13, 2006, after serving our country for 30 years. Dennis's photos from tours in Iraq are posted on the main page of MSO, along with a photo of his retirement night with brother Bruce (1966) who retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1998. Thanks to you two "jarheads" for preserving our freedom! We extend gratitude to all of our current and veteran Peary Alumni service men and women... and their offspring... Barb Zukav Davis (1975): "Here's a picture of my son, Tommy, on the first day of boot-camp in FT. Benning, GA. He's in the center-front, with the BCUs--[birth control units]--Army issue glasses--lol. He likes it a lot. His father, who passed away 10 yrs ago, when he was 10, was a Green Beret Viet Nam vet. He wants to be just like his dad." [The photo of Barb's son is posted in the "Alumni Kids News" area of the MSO website.] ASHP FOUNDATION (ashpfoundation.org): Fundraiser on March 6th at the Austin Grill, 7278 Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda. ASHP will receive 33% of all restaurant sales made after 5pm. Proceeds are used to fund medication safety research -- ASHP is the foundation that sponsors the annual charitable golf tournament that celebrates the life of Walter Jones, father of Victor Jones (1984). Couple of news items on the home front here. My son, Kevin, is now in his 5th year with the Baltimore Orioles, as assistant director of player development. So I still keep my hand in pro baseball, after many years myself as Cubs PR director here in Chicago. My own company, Ibach & Associates, has offices in Chicago and Sarasota and we do media relations and event management work, with a focus on sports. I also recently completed writing my 6th book, called "Making Airwaves" which comes out in February at bookstores nationally and online at Amazon.com. I co-authored this with Dan Schlossberg and it is the life story of Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster Milo Hamilton, the voice of the Houston Astros since 1985...Milo and I worked together when I was Cubs PR director from 1981-89...another book that I authored years ago, "Caught In the Net" about the Clemson basketball coach Tates Locke who cheated at that school in the early 70s and then told why he did it, is being made into a movie. Two Hollywood screenwriters have just completed the script and are shopping it to ESPN-TV and some other producers on the West Coast. Once our daughter, Kelsey, graduates from high school next year, my wife Vera and I will probably move out of cold Chicago and live at our home in Sarasota which we built two years ago--then I can continue to dodge all the hurricanes. Looking forward to coming back to the 40th reunion this fall--gosh, has it been 40 years? Wow. Best regards, Bob Ibach (Class of '66) ********** From: Beth Rogers Horvat (1974) Date: Wed, 4 Jan 2006 Subject: thank you I wanted to thank everyone for the wonderful memories that you have shared of your lives with John. John totally enjoyed his experiences with everyone from Peary, Seneca Valley, Rockville Drive-In and Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad. These were a few of the "famlies" that John lived with everyday. John enjoyed his job at Peary to the fullest, because it wasn't just a job it was an adventure. It was as though we were all one big family. It is a family that will always encourage and support each other through the good times and the bad. I just would like to thank each and everyone of you for your thoughts, prayers and support. I appologize for not writing any sooner, but the loss of my best friend has been a trial for me. I wanted to let everyone know that John will never be gone, because he lives on not only through his children, but through each Peary and Seneca Valley grad and through the people and lives he has touched in the fire/rescue services. Thank you again. Sincerely, Beth Horvat ********** From: John Applegate (1973) Date: Wed, 4 Jan 2006 Subject: Hello to all Peary Grads....... Thought some of you football fans might like to know that my youngest son, Ross Applegate, has committed to Boston College to play quarterback. Ross is 6'6" ...taller than Dad, but my oldest Mike still has us both beat by a hair! Ross led his team to the Georgia State Semi Finals as a junior and this year went to the second round of the playoffs. He's been 21 and 5 as a starter in the highest classification of HS football here in GA. Ross committed in July to BC and is really excited about coming north and playing in the ACC. They'll likely redshirt him his first year, but he's been told he will probably be on the active squad and get some "TV" time by being the one who signals in the plays. And yep...Dad IS a pretty proud father of two great kids. Mike graduates from UNC this spring. GO EAGLES! ********** From: Michelle Tully Harrington (1986/Rockville) Date: Wed, 4 Jan 2006 Subject: Update Website - www.crs.org (international relief and development agency of the Catholic church). Two alumni friend's children got married November 12, 2005 !! Sherry Wimberly's daughter, Tammy married my son, Barry Griffin. Sherry & I have known each other since we were 12 years old. We grew up together and had some really fun times at Parkland & Peary from passing notes in class, to junior high school dances, slumber parties, sneaking out at night, bus trips to Wheaton Plaza, high school football games, boyfriends, etc. etc. Then we watched each other's children grow. I was there when Tammy took her first steps and little Tammy was at my baby shower for Barry. Barry & Tammy celebrated birthday parties together, family gatherings and trips to O.C. In fact, Tammy used to babysit Barry and his sister! That's when Tammy was 13 and Barry was 10. We have so many wonderful memories and there will be many more to come especially when the grandchildren start coming. Sherry & I are having great fun being fellow "Mother-In-Laws" and will especially enjoy being "Grandmas" together. We feel so very blessed !! I had been making art since I was thirteen years old and, at the time I met her, I was in my second semester of tenth grade. I had flunked my first semester of German and was in one of those adolescent states of feeling misunderstood and unaccomplished. Rather than continue with German, I asked if I could start her Painting class in the second semester. As politely as I could, I asked her if I could share some ideas of what I was already doing and what I would like to do in her class. I must have come across a bit more cocky than I thought as her reaction was to listen and then let me know in no uncertain terms that she was in control of the situation and that she had a list of assignments from which I could choose. She handed me the list of choices to look over. After a few minutes, I think she noticed I had become a bit forlorn. And it was then that she taught me one of my most important lessons of my life: compromise. She pointed out that I could do what I wanted as long as it satisfied an assignment. I was confused as nothing seemed to match my desired project. She pointed me in the right direction. It didn^Òt have to fit exactly. We found an assignment that was close enough and I got to work. She was very serious and so was I. She was determined that I would work in her class and not play around. Within a couple of weeks, she realized that I was committed to what I was doing. By the end of the semester, I turned in five times the required amount of assignments. I continued to take more classes with Mrs. Glass in eleventh and twelfth grade. I did commercial art, painting and drawing, and silk screen prints. She prepared me well for both an accelerated art class and an internship that I took in my senior year and for college. I learned all sorts of technical skills. But the most important thing I learned from her was compromise. When in college, as much as I could, I arranged independent study classes where I would work out with the instructor in advance what my goals would be. They enjoyed my commitment and enthusiasm. I was always prepared to earn respect through my hard work. After I graduated, I treated my jobs in a similar fashion. Sometimes it was awkward for bosses to have an employee who didn't simply do what he was told, but if the results were successful, they would find they actually had less work to do themselves with me as their employee. Of course, life is a challenge, but it is easier when I get satisfaction from it. And it never hurts to make a boss feel good. When I heard of Mrs. Glass's passing, all of these memories came to mind. I wish that I had been able to tell her this myself, but that never came together. Now, I am currently working in a school myself. And I have done what I can to pass the important lessons that I learned from her on to the students I am involved with. Whenever I hear a student speak of being frustrated or of something not being fair, I try to avoid just telling them to be obedient. As the situation permits, I attempt to pass on that same gift that Mrs. Glass gave to me: the lesson of compromise. Jokie X Wilson ********** From: Ken Roseman (1969) Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2006 Subject: MINTIE GLASS/ Ken's Update Hello all: I'm writing this way before the deadline while memory is still fresh. Mrs. Glass was a great lady and teacher. What I remember about art class (senior year) was that it didn't matter if you could draw perfectly; what mattered was if students put in effort and understood the concept. Class atmosphere was relaxed; Mrs. Glass let us bring in records that we listened to while working on our assigned projects. I wanted to attend the other memorial events, but could only get to the actual burial service at Arlington National Cemetery. The service itself was very brief; men in navy uniforms carried the casket and an officer read a passage from the Bible. A small group was present: family members, a few friends, and from Peary-- Dr. Dunn and myself. I met Mr. Glass after the ceremony and told him that Mrs. Glass was a great teacher. I had been nervous about going to this event but it absolutely was the right thing to do. And I want to publicly thank Dr. Dunn for giving me a ride back to Silver Spring. He told me about the process he went through selecting faculty for Peary and how we got the anchor. Dr. Dunn has had quite a fascinating career-- I hope to talk with him some more about that. Regular update: I'm getting used to living in "South Silver Spring," I walk to my evening job (telephone fundraiser for PEACE ACTION) and joined the American Film Institute, who took over the old "Silver" theater. (I walk there too). Many of the new restaurants in downtown Silver Spring are branches of "chains," but there are still a few independents. BOMBAY GAYLORD (Indian) has a good lunch buffet Monday-Friday featuring tandoori chicken and chicken curry. During the last week in October I travelled to Newcastle, England for the 2005 WOMEX convention. This convention focuses on "world music" and is held in a different European city every year. I had a great time; met people from England, Scotland, Canada, Israel, Italy, Germany, Spain, and elsewhere. Heard and saw performers from Italy, Scotland, England, Canada (Quebec), and north Africa. SPAKKA (napoli) from Italy were great!! I'd been waiting 5 years to see them, ever since I heard their CD which is a marvelous blend of traditional folk and modern influences. By the way, I'm one of the "critics" who participates in the VILLAGE VOICE annual music critics' poll. Each ballot submitted will be posted on the VILLAGE VOICE web site (should be soon). Best wishes to everyone for 2006!! PEACE, LOVE, AND... In addition to Bill and I, Mrs. Haag is survived by her husband of 56-years, Bill, Sr., and two grandsons, Billy and Ryan Haag. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Ijamsville, MD on Friday, January 6th, where many friends and family joined us in celebrating my mother-in-law's life. While I didn't know my husband during his high school years, I sure did hear all about those great parties on Brad Court these past few weeks! It appears my in-laws had the "rockin' house." Both my father and mother-in-law are very special to me and always treated me as their own daughter. Mom is surely going to be missed but we know that God has created another "Angel" to watch over us. We also want to thank all the alumns for their love, support, and prayers during this difficult time. We want to extend an extra "special" thank-you to those alumns in the classes of 1980 and 1984!! True friendship and we love you all! We do wish everyone a happy, safe, and prosperous new year!! May 2006 be your best year yet!!
