Haven't posted anything since 2001. Lot of changes. Our family keeps growing, LOL. Olivia Nykole was officially adopted in April, 2005. In the short time that we've had Nykole (less than two years) she has added greatly to our family dynamics. Nykole is now 7 years old and in 2nd grade. We started homeschooling Donovan (now 8, 3rd grade) and Nykole this year. That is going very well. Mandy is married (4 years now) and Suzy will celebrate her first anniversary this month. Joey graduated this past June and is working on a career in music. He is presently still living at home, but that's going well, so no complaints there ... yet. His band is called "Yours For Mine" (they have a webpage with PureVolume). Charley and I celebrated our 10th anniversary by going on an Alaska cruise. We can't wait to go back! My Mom/StepDad (along with their two dogs and one cat) moved into a lovely "in-law" apartment in our basement this past May. So, as I said, our family keeps growing. Hopefully there will be grandchildren to brag about ... someday. ********** From: Ricky McKinney (1980) Date: Mon, 7 Nov 2005 Subject: Update I found out about the website from a a friend. It has been quite a while since I last wrote in. In August 2004 I showed up on TV and newspapers as "the NASA guy explaining the crash of the Genesis spacecraft." That was quite a shock to the system, and it has been non-stop action since then. By the way, it looks like we have gotten most, if not all, of the science out of Genesis. As the Director of NASA's Solar System Division (yes, I like to unabashedly push the cool title), I feel like I am on top of the world. The Mars Rovers, Cassini around Saturn, the spectacular Deep Impact comet encounter a few months ago--all of these are controled within my Division. We have a spacecraft on its way to Mercury (Messenger), one coming back from collecting samples of a comet (Stardust--January 15), another on its way to Mars (MRO), and one getting ready to go to Pluto (New Horizons--January 11). With all of this, there seemingly has been no time to breathe. But, yes, to all of you who remember me as the space geek from Rock Creek Valley, this is what I have always wanted to do. I get a real kick out of seeing how my words get contorted in the press (and get a real laugh out of some blogs that have used my quotes to justify some pretty off the wall opinions). I actually feel for politicians (sort of), seeing how easy it is to say something simple and have it taken out of context. I have to laugh at it all--I am still pretty much the quiet person I always was, so it seems so ironic when one of my utterances hits the papers. Did you see the press on Deep Impact? Front page of every major newspaper worldwide. That was quite a tough mission, but the team, pulled it off wonderfully. As I said, this is really a cool job. It is a real honor to be associated with so many brilliant engineers and scientists. But enough of that. Some of you might remember that I was in Judo way back when. Well, I never really quit, and my two sons ages 9 and 10, are into it. Both got first place in the National Championship two years ago, and the older got 3rd last summer. They really love it and Dad will be happy any time they want to take a break (seriously!), but they just keep at it. My wife, Erin, is a High School English teacher and so I have learned to have a great deal of sympathy for all teachers, especially English teachers. All those papers to grade! Yuk! It really stinks that I missed the 80 reunion, but I had to travel out of town. It looks like it was fun, though. Everybody please take care of yourselves and your families, and enjoy the upcoming holidays! A lot of things have changed in my life in the past few years. In March of 2000, my husband of nearly 30 years, died suddenly (Walter Clark Devore - Blair '69). But I got myself together......Life does go on! I have since remarried a wonderful man, Richard (October 2002). We are both retired and enjoying life and have jsut recently purchased a 26' RV. Will start traveling in the spring. We each have 4 grown children and between the two of us we have 11 grandchildren (1 year to 19 years old). With that many holidays are crazy, but fun. Since High School: Worked in North Carolina in advertising for 11 years; worked as a chef from 1989 to 2002; own part interest in restaurants in Mobile, AL, Knoxville, TN, and Charlotte, NC. I met a great woman named Judye Allman about four years ago. She was injured in a motorcycle accident in August '02 and was confined to a wheelchair, so I moved in with her to be her primary caregiver. After looking around at what we'd like to do in our retirement years, we decided to open a wine shop, which we did on September 19th, 2005. It's called VinElla - "vin" for wine, "Ella" for our granddaughter - a full-line wine and specialty beer shop, and it's located in Woodinville, Washington, which wine fans will recognize as the hometown of Chateau Ste. Michelle, Columbia Winery, Januik, DeLille, Betz, Baer, Matthews, and Silver Lake, to name less than half of the local wine community. I have a few pictures posted on buzznet.com, keywords "Wine", "Woodinville", "Washington", and "VinElla". We will have a website up shortly, at vinellawines.com , at which you can order wine, as long as your state's laws allow.   We now have seven grandkids between the two of us, including our second granddaughter, Alyson Marie Leonardo, born October 18th. Judye, who was told she would never recover any function below the site of her injury (T4-5, spinal cord) is now up on a walker and just bought a car with hand controls. She also landed a GREAT job with a major Northwest developer, so I'm VinElla by myself except on Saturdays, but It's a lot of fun and keeps me off the streets. Future Plans: More VinEllas; publish novel, "Tree Hugger"; open retail bakery in Woodinville in 2007. Memorable Teachers: Vince Gibbs, for his knowledge and charisma; Mike Tile for his open mind; Bob Clark for barely-disguised eccentricity. What a wonderful service this website is! When I attended Peary, we lived on Eastland St. which is a one-block street parallel to both Mariana Dr. and Bauer Dr. Chances are, many of you remember that neighborhood...great place to grow up! Back around 1963-ish or so, Norman Coder, who was the father of Linda (WHS, '63), Bill, Paul, and Martha (all Peary grads) was a Boy Scout Scoutmaster. He had planned a Christmas party for the troop, and needed someone to play Santa. He asked my dad, Pete Hoffman, to play the part. For those who don't know or don't remember, Mr. Coder was tall and lean. My dad was tall (6'3"), but...uh...not so lean! Anyway, Mr. Coder rented a Santa suit which he was sure would be large enough. Turns out it was close...kinda, sorta, but not really! But when the night of the party arrived my dad wasn't feeling well. My mom, Eloise Hoffman, tried to dissuade him from playing Santa, but he wouldn't hear of it. He said something like, "No Eloise, I promised Norman I'd be there, and those kids are expecting Santa, so I've got to be there!" So he put on the costume. It was skin-tight! And of course that meant he'd be overheated and extra-uncomfortable in it given the fact that he had a fever. My mom kept lobbying for him to stay home, postpone, whatever! No way, he says...got to be there! So my poor dad dresses up as Santa, fake beard, pretend boots, the whole nine yards, and goes anyway. (Now days, most parents would probably prefer that he stay home given the same situation, but people usually just "soldiered on" back then, hoping for the best.) He went to the party, did his best to "ho-ho-ho" his way through the evening, then came home, walked straight from our front door to his bed and darn-near collapsed! I never saw him look worse! His face was as red as the Santa suit! Poor Dad! But he made it through and fulfilled his promise to Mr. Coder and did not let those kids down! Just a little memory I thought I'd share for those of you who may have grown up in Aspen Knolls, and possibly remember either or both dads! (By the way, Aspen Knolls is the name of that part of Aspen Hill.) Happy Holidays to all!--Ann Hoffman McKee, '65 ********** From: Howard Jordan (1971) Date: Mon, 28 Nov 2005 Subject: Update I found out about the website from Roz Rubin.
