Not really a news item... more of an inquiry. Was there a class of '72? Month after month I enjoy reading about the school that once was but rarely if ever do I see anything pertaining to 1972. I know my high school years were a bit nebulous. Was it so for the entire class? Regretably, living in Florida makes it difficult to get together with classmates who may remember me. So I do enjoy the periodic updates provided by the newsline. Now that I've spent a year staying home as a Mr. Mom {Joshua turned 1 on September 19} and gaining new respect for moms all over the world, I would have enjoyed reading more about the class of '72. Oh well, time to feed the young-un, finish the laundry and go outside to feed the other critters. It's only been a quarter of a century, talk about dust in the wind! jjj ********** From: Jerry Leach (1979) Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 Subject: Update Occupation: Management/Analyst, IRS; Spouse: Adina (Chief, Financial Management, IRS), Children: Lyndsay 18 & Abbey 8 Adina & I just completed the Multiple Sclerosis 150-mile Breakaway to the Beach bike ride, riding from Rockingham, NC to Myrtle Beach, SC. Occupation: physician Since High School: A long, long story. Traveled the world. Went to medical school. Lived in an Apache village. Had an academic career. Climbed a corporate ladder. Moved to the Pacific NW. Future Plans: Peace. Maybe prosperity. Memorable Teacher: Mrs. Percival - her interest in us. Siblings: My brother, Terry - 1973 ********** From: Chris Smith (1968) Date: Sun, 2 Oct 2005 Subject: Update Les Greenberg's recent update prompted me to offer some news. I live in Bethesda near Glen Echo with my wife of 21 years and my two children, both of whom are at Whitman. My sister Barbara ('71) lives in Ft Collins, CO with her husband and two children, who are also in high school. Mom lives in SC and is doing very well. Our family is greatly blessed. The past couple of years have been an adventure. In the spring of 2003, I followed what can best be described as a clear, compelling vision to return to school. In June '05, I completed a MS in Organizational Development from the American University/National Training Labs (AU/NTL). The experience was nothing short of exceptional in terms of both intellectual and personal growth. Working full time while obtaining a Masters in two years was quite a challenge. I learned that I more bandwidth than I realized! This spring, while heading toward the finish line in school, I closed the sale of Ai, the architecture firm in which I was a partner and CFO. (Dominic Venuto, '68, was one of the founders and recruited me there in 1998. He's now in Richmond.) Providentially, an opportunity arose several days after closing which has turned into my current job as COO of US Green Building Council (www.usgbc.org). The organization is a broad coalition of companies within the building industries who have formed standards that promote sustainable design, i.e., environmentally-friendly buildings. USGBC is growing like gangbusters, and my learning from grad school is paying dividends every day. I haven't had this much fun, or challenge, at work for nearly 20 years. Would love to hear from old friends from Peary - couldn't get down to OC this year - maybe next. chris-smith@comcast.net ********** From: donna canevari goldberg (1983) Date: Tue, 4 Oct 2005 Subject: Update Occupation: teacher aid/ head start, Significant Other: daved meyer (coverment), Children: jammie/conie/david/elizabeth/micheal Memorable Incident: the pie man Since High School: having kids and working hard Future Plans: moving to ocean Memorable Teacher: mister snips he mad me smile Siblings: thomas/pam/bob/janet/robert ********** From: Bruce Sydnor (1970) Date: Wed, 5 Oct 2005 Subject: Update How I found out about the website... wife discovered I was a missing person on the site. I know this year is going to be very hard on my family because we lost my brother Randy. Even though he didn't graduate from Peary he will be missed by my whole family especially my sister Donna Glass of 66 as she was with him 24/7 because she doesn't work and is disabled. Also, just a note my Twin Grandchildren Melonie and Christine Saah who live in our area with their other grandmother just lost their father on September 30, 2005. These children are 13 years old and their father was quite ill for quite a long time but they loved him unconditionally. Just think of your loved ones and hold them close as time with them becomes short and you have alot of "I am glad I did" instead of "wish I did." Everyone keep well Eileen ********** From: John Hennessey (1973) Date: Mon, 10 Oct 2005 Subject: ABC's "Extreme Makeover" We just returned from Maine where we built ABC's first log home for their "Extreme Makeover, Home Edition" When we were approached by ABC I was skeptical to say the least. But a monumental logistics effort, approx. 1200 people and great attitudes all around proved to be sufficient. We actually built the house (approx. 5,000 sq ft) in less than 5 days because the first day and a half were spent demolishing the old house and pouring a new foundation. I will send a notification when I know the air date. It should be late Nov or early Dec. It was quite the experience even if I don't like the show! I have to say what I found most rewarding about the entire experience was the comaraderie and team work among a large group, most of whom had never worked together before. Met a lot of very cool folks and felt we did something nice for someone. If you ever get the chance to help on one of these, do it. ********** From: Susan Broberg Naugle (1981) Date: Tue, 11 Oct 2005 Subject: Update I found out about the website... while playing on the computer. Occupation: homemaker, volunteer, was a nurse; Spouse: Brian (retired physician, neonatologist), Children: Keith 34, Jennifer 33, Jeff 29, Grandchildren: Alexis 13, Zachary 4 weeks Memorable Incidents: Mr. MacKay pulling the fire alarm because the chemicals in the store room were smoldering. It was one of the final days at schools and the custodians were incenerating reams of paper and waste cleaned from classrooms. The chemical storeroom surrounded the chimney; Mr. MacKay had complained about the location of chemicals in that area since he had come to Peary to Dr. Dunn with no results. This proved his point and served to alert the fire marshall. It was a great demonstration of ways to get your point across after all else fails--and a good lesson in perseverance. Since High School: Served for three years as a nurse in the US Navy--1968-71, raised a family, volunteered locally and in Romania, Lithuania and Latvia with International Relief Teams. Future Plans: Continue volunteering and enjoying retirement Memorable Teachers: Mrs. Richardson, biology: taught basic classroom behavior and biology. Her course made college courses a breeze! Laid the basis for study habits and a lifelong appreciation of science. Mr. MacKay: made chemistry a treat. Also taught me how to study for college which really helped when I had classes taught by people who were far less skilled in communications than Mr. MacKay. All of us were wearing shorts and sandals. Mr. Hill, Mr. Thomas, and Ms. Vadala.....what a mix of teaching styles and emotional stability. Since High School: I am a graduate of Johns Hopkins University with a Masters Degree in Applied Behavioral Science. I also have a Bachelors Degree in Sociology/Political Science from Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College. For over 10 years, I have worked as a Training Officer at the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. The challenge is to create a work environment where everyone can grow while contributing to the overall mission of the Agency. EPA employees tend to be very passionate about the mission and committed to making environmental improvements in areas of human health and habitat protection. My family enjoys living in the area. We recently moved to Olney from Silver Spring. Occasionally, I drive on Arctic Avenue and remember the winning days of the Peary Huskies' football and basketball teams. Starting to here rumors that Montgomery County might consider repurchasing Peary in light of the surrounding neighborhood becoming much younger. Future Plans: Continue to make the most of life and to enjoy my family and my work. I am a season ticket holder to Raven's games in Baltimore. Also, I am happy to see baseball back in D.C. Memorable Teachers: Ms. Vadala - a wild woman with lots of exuberance and a zainy nature as well. Mr. Thomas - enjoyed teaching math much more than I enjoyed learning about it.....liked to discuss his other job at A & P. Mr. Hill - serious, genuine, decent, and respectful of the fact that math did not rock everyone's boat. Also, the woman who was the Spanish teacher.....she was nice......came in to the class every day with a smile and a desire to teach us something we might use......to this day, I have yet to use Spanish in any meaningful way.....there's always tomorrow. ********** From: Alan Goldberg (1974) Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2005 Subject: Update Occupation: Police Captain, Spouse: Paula (Clerk), Children: Samantha 18, Stephanie 14 Memorable Incidents: I will always remember the plane landing on the lower field and the guy showing up to the cafeteria with a shotgun (I think it was Mr Hassler that took the gun from him) and the teacher's face when he found out it was loaded. Since High School: I graduated with my degree in advanced basket weaving and Administration of Justice from American University in '77. I landed jobs as a police officer at National Airport for the FAA for a short time and switched over to the Metropolitan Police Department, DC from 78 through 81. I came home to Montgomery County PD and have been working here ever since. I finally hit the twentieth anniversary married to the same woman. Police work is easy compared to marriage. My oldest daughter started college in PA and the youngest was is a freshman in HS. It's a full time job keeping the boyfriends away. Good thing I carry a gun and a TASER. I am working on my 28th year in policing. Still having fun but I can't play on the street as much as I used to. I am doing a lot of traveling for the Feds training on less lethal force and technology. Future Plans: I guess I will keep working as long as I can. Texas and Arizona are looking like really good places for retirement. Memorable Teachers: Mr. Bragonier always made class enjoyable. We always had fun in his class. I remember Mr. Nawrocki yelling at me for speeding during drivers ed. Then I pointed out that the speed limit changed and he never bothered me again. Of course, he exacted revenge on my daughters as they passed through Baker Middle School where he teaches PE. And, there was Mr. Jacobs and his "cosine of theta."
