************************************************************ MIDNIGHT SUN ONLINE The Online Newsletter for Robert E. Peary High School Alumni Volume 10, Number 12 July 2006 MSO WEBSITE - http://www.pearyhs.org ************************************************************ INTRODUCTION Greetings Huskies! We hope you're enjoying your summer!! In this issue... Intro (general news items and reunion info), Classmate Updates, Quick Takes Updates, Condolence Notices. PEARY/MSO: We currently have 4,700+ aboard MSO, Staff and Grads from 1963-1984 (and those who attended, classes of '85 and '86!). We wanted to let you know, as so many have noticed and inquired about, that the monthly newsletter is really LATE getting out.. by 4 months! The last "monthly" newsletter was the March 2006 issue. This is the first time in ten years that the monthly newsletter had fallen this far behind. Our apologies. The backlog of submissions really grew and hit MSO, due to so many signing aboard for their respective class reunions this summer and fall and the inquiries about the 5th annual multi-class "Pearymania" in Ocean City (9/29-30) and the daily modifications and updates to classmate records for each of the 24 classes (and teachers and staff) - relocation/address changes, e-mail address changes, funeral/memorial notices.... Additionally, your "webmaster/editor"... me, had to concentrate full-time on some important work and personal matters that kept me busy - go figure. To our NEW classmates on MSO who are receiving this newsletter for the first time.. normally we'd have sent you a direct "welcome" when you signed-on. We didn't - just wanted to get to processing the submission data right away and into the MSO and respective class records/databse ASAP since we were so behind. Nonetheless, WELCOME to our new alums! If you're unfamilar with the MSO and its newsletter and the website, you will quickly see what it is all about - re-acquainting with all of your old friends and classmates, and seeing what they're up to these days. Yeah, MSO is like a classmates.com, but it's a little more personable and ONLY for Peary High School alums! Anytime between newsletters.. minimally, all timely notices are posted at www.pearyhs.org. Often, unfortunately, these are funeral or memorial service arrangements. Please visit the website occasionally for these kinds of news items. i.e. don't wait for the newsletter - by then, it's too late on to act upon with many newsbits. Given that, and this newsletter being a compilation of almost 4 months, please note that some "articles"/updates in this issue are "untimely" (for lack of a better term)... but that the updates and news still needs to be included so you'll know who is up to what! Those who have submitted photos the past few months with a request to post them on the website.... they are forthcoming - processing them for the website takes time, and that will be the project's next task. With that.. we continue on with the normal Introductory items... and your updates..... GET WELL SOON: Gene MacKay (Staff 1962-69) - As most of you know (from the MSO website, posted in April), Mr. MacKay had a 5-hour surgery on Tuesday April 11th. He has been diagnosed with Bell's Palsy as a result of squamous cell cancer which is fairly advanced and growing rapidly. He and Linda wanted to let his former students at Peary know. He is at home recuperating now and will reply to your e-mails soon! From Mr. MacKay: "I can not say how much your [Peary alumni] notes have meant to me these years. I am very fortunate that my daughters have come to be with me at this time." Mr. MacKay may be reached directly at gene@genesdance.net. JOE CHORNOCK (1972): Congratulations to Joe, who became Chief of the Glen Echo Fire Department and Conduit Road (MacArthur Blvd) Fire Board this spring. See his bio at http://www.gefd.org/about/fromthechief.asp KOMEN RACE FOR THE CURE: "Bosom Buddies" & National Race for the Cure - Kudos to Beth Leimbach Swanson (1966) and her efforts to raise funds for breast cancer research and continuing her participation in the event with her team on June 3rd. Beth is a 2-time survivor! AVON WALK: Thank you to all who supported Barb (Dentz) and Tim Riley's (1971) daughter, Jennifer's, efforts with the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer April 29 & 30 (40 miles). She exceeded the required goal of $1,800 and personally totaled $3,718. The grand total for her team exceeded $18,000! Sandy Legeer, the daughter of Debbie Darr Wilson (1972), is participating in the Avon Walk in New York, October 7-8th, in memory of Pam Alderton Bussink (1972). Debbie and Pam were best friends. Please visit Sandy's site and support her effort. The link is available on the MSO website (it's a very long URL/address). ... and congratulations to Seth Jason (1979) - The Avon Foundation selected Seth to be among 5 recipients for the Food & Friends 2006 "Spirit of Friendship Award" on June 26th. Friends is a long time beneficiary in Washington DC of the Avon Foundation and, with this, honors the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer walkers and volunteers. Seth became involved in Breast Cancer walker/awareness thanks to prompting from sister Julie Jason Marquis (1982) to volunteer. Kudos, Seth! CAPITOL CHILDRENS FOUNDATION: From Dan Plante (1982) - dplante@capitol-drywall.com - "I began Capitol Children's Foundation, Inc. (CCF) in 2003 with my business partner Karl Celtnieks. We were touched by the emotional struggle of a 10 year old girl named Allie Miller who was battling a rare form of pediatric cancer. With an idea of wanting to help sick children, we reached out to several local business leaders and formed CCF. The first year, the CCF focus was to raise money to help find a cure for Allie's disease. However, Allie eventually lost her battle with cancer on May 13, 2004 but we continue to raise money for local children's medical-related organizations. 100% of all dollars raised goes towards children in need. Last year, the Capitol Children's Foundation raised over $80,000.00 to help children from five organizations. They included For the Love of Children (FLOC), Scoring for Children, Potomac Ridge Behavior Health Foundation, Dyslexia Tutoring Program and Community Service for Autistic Adults and Children (CSAAC). This year, the 4th Annual Capitol Children's Foundation Golf Classic sponsored by Sandy Spring Bank will be held August 21, 2006 at the TPC at Avenel - http://www.tpc.com/private/avenel/index.html We have 2 more Corporate Sponsorships available if anyone or company can help." Thanks, Dan Plante LINDA TYSON FONT (1968): Puccini's "Edgar" opera performances were held on July 22 in Germantown and on July 23 in Rockville. Linda performs with the chorus! This concert opera performance was a bit more special. Linda is involved with the American Center for Puccini Studies which had secured the score for this special Four-Act version. It was the first time this full original version had been heard in public in over 100 years. Visit PucciniAmerica.org, and click on the tab for "Edgar." Congrats, Linda! Linda can be reached at lmfont@aol.com if you have further questions. We hope you were able to make one of these historic performances. MABLE THOMAS and MARYLAH CLARK: From Ken Roseman (1969)... "Has anyone alerted MSO to the article on George Washington Carver High School which ran in the MAY 25 Montgomery County supplement to The WASHINGTON POST? Mable Thomas taught and was a vice principal there. Marylah Clark (Martin) is a member of their class of 1955. Both appeared in photos which accompanied the article." Just weeks after our last class reunion as a matter of fact. I would ask you to please, please think about taking a little time out of your schedule to become a registered bone marrow donor. It only takes minutes and a little blood. You don't know whose child, sibling, mother or father you may save. Fortunately for our family Ryan seems to be cured. With strength and courage he endured three and a half years of chemo treatments, spinal taps, procedures and hospital stays. He celebrated one year post-treatment this January and is currently a junior at Baylor University. Just do this one thing... the next time you are outside walking in the breeze, feeling the sun on your face and thinking what a beautiful day it is remember the children in the hospital. If they are able to take a walk today it will be a short circuit around the nurses' station with an IV pole. It is nice to count your blessings but it's a whole lot better to bless someone else. I am a rape survivor, which I use art as a release, and I am very sorry that I did not point this out in my initial submission. Being the STAT for the boys baseball team, again thanks to Mr. Hassler. And remember that time Hassler had a sub and we put sticky dots all over the wall? Randy Wilson got the brunt of the punishment because Mr. Hassler didn't believe him when he accused me of doing it too! Since High School: My family moved to The Netherlands my junior year at Peary (Oct 1978). At the time I felt I was missing out on so much; dances, prom, football games, friends, Don Turner as Mr. Universe (or some such thing. I had a 1980 yearbook sent to me in Amsterdam) Anyway, I got over it. So in a nutshell after I graduated I got married, had 2 kids, got divorced, went back to school, worked as the side-kick for the president of a software company in Portland, OR, got married again, had 3 more kids. My husband is now partner at a law firm in Eastern Oregon while I am a full time MOM. We have 40 acres in a tiny town in western Idaho (just across the river from the firm) with 7 of it in chardonnay grape vines. Occupation: Full Time Mom, certified Physician Assistant; Spouse: Salvador (MD) Since High School: After nearly a decade as a stay-at-home mom, I began a new job in the Fall, in order to pay for my 3yr old's preschool education! My sister had been without an office manager for nearly a year, and needed someone to run her front desk and assist with patients. I volunteered to help on a temporary basis-that was Sept. I'm still there! In the meantime, I retook my boards, passed, reapplied for my PA license, and finally had that this past March. I'm hoping to get back into my field NEXT Sept, once all three kids are in school full time. As for now, I'm very busy and quite happy at my sister's office: Chiropractic Neurology and Rehabilitation Center in Rockville, MD. (My sister, Julie, went to Magruder since Peary was closed the year she was a sophmore.) I've also started making crafts for sale- to support my daughter's gymnastics fees! My sister and I will have a booth at the Laurel Main Street Festival on May 13th, just before Mother's Day. Stop by if you'd like a nice Floral Pen Bouquet for Mom's desk, or an awesome piece of unique, hand-crafted jewelry (my sister's work). If you'd like to see some samples, just email me at ArtToShare@msn.com and I'll send you some photos. I haven't figured out how to make a website yet. I'm waiting for one of the kids to show me! My brother Alan ('81) is living happily with his wife and son in Texas; he's a high school teacher. The shaving cream incident, and all the other things I won't share with my teenagers. Since High School: During beach week we met some guys from the Wheaton area and developed a friendship over the summer. The last week of the summer I was introduced to one of the friends Rex. The first day at Montgomery College I ran into Rex in front of the cafeteria. We have now been married for almost 26 years. Out of beach week Mary, Bobbi and I met our husbands. After MC I went on to George Mason University (How about those Patriots!). I passed the CPA exam and worked in public accounting for 7 years. We moved to Miami for three years and my husband realized that Peary alumni were everywhere. Our next door neighbor sold his house and when we went to introduce ourseleves to the new neighbors, it was Martine Paran Palmiter (1976) and her husband Al. Small world, Al went to Northwood with my husband. To makes things a little weird, when the Palmiter's had an electrician over to do some work he also went to Peary. Come to find out his cousin was renting my house in Germantown along with 2 other Peary Alumni. We went to Miami a couple and came back a family of 4. My son Sean (18) attends Towson University and is currently majoring in accounting but that will probably change at least 10 times. My son Patrick (17) is a junior at Gaithersburg High School. I think I have been blessed with the best two kids in the world and have enjoyed every second of their lives. I was born to be a mother and love them as teenagers as much as when they were babies. I am currently working as the Vice President for Finance and Administration for the National Association of Community Health Centers. I have been there for almost 16 years and still love my job. In my spare time I do anything that can possibly be done with glass. I always enjoyed art and needed a creative outlet. I started with stained glass, moved into glass painting, sandblasting, glass fusing and then glass blowing. Glass is my passion and hot glass is my absolute addiction. I was recently featured as one of the Art of Fire's emerging artists. The Art of Fire is about 6 miles from my house and is a fantastic place to visit. You can see the owner Foster Holcombe at the Maryland Renaissance Fair. Future Plans: I plan to enjoy every minute I have with my family. I would love to develop my glass craft by attending classes at Corning and Las Vegas. Another must is to visit Belgium several more times to develop my expertise on Belgium beers. Memorable Teachers: Mr. Thomas in business law. He teased me constantly about a romance gone awry with one of his favorite students. Mr. Nawrocki aka as "Foxy Nawrocksi", had lots of laughs in driver's ed. Also turns out that our kids went to the same elementary school, his son was younger. He would cringe every time I would tell my kids that he was the guy who taught me to drive. ********** From: Nancy Privette Kimbrough (1964) Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2006 Subject: Update Occupation: CJA Administrator for Fed. No, I didn't have the surgery. I am doing Michael Thurmond's six week body makeover and I love it. Anyway, there's good and bad to this whole thing. I'm losing roles on tv and film because I'm not big enough. So, it's a little depressing, but I'm healthier and happier physically. I feel like a shrinky dink. (remember those) haha. I'll be home for the 25th reunion in July. I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone, too! I'm trying to plan a movie screening of two or three of my short films and I'm looking for a location to host it. I have a couple of people that have had wonderful ideas but nothing definite yet. There will be press so it can't be at my house! Haha, don't want to scare anyone. Once the date and location are finalized, I will post it on my website www.allieraye.com and then put in another entry in the newsletter. It will be fun. The ironic thing is while I'm home (July 21-30th) I will find out if we got accepted into the DC shorts film fest. That would be cool, huh? That's all for now. On my site, there are pictures from the films as well as before and after (or during) pictures of me shrinking. Check them out if you have the time. Til then- see you all soon! We are blest. ********** From: JEFFREY COX (1982) Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2006 Subject: Update I found out about the website from JACKIE EDMONDS. After 39 1/2 years living at 4810 Rim Rock Rd., my mother has sold her house. My dad passed away 15 years ago this July and the upkeep of a 5 BR house just became too much (along w/ all of the stairs!). The movers will be coming this coming Monday, June 19. I have been going to help her pack/organize and throw away (as much as she will let me do--there's nothing like throwing away items and having Nancy Drew of a mother come right behind you to check out the garbage bags!) for the past two months and today was the last hurrah. Today, I went down to her house and spent five more hours getting her kitchen packed up. She had left the house almost three hours before I did so I had the house to myself (translation: got to throw a lot of stuff away!!!) When I was standing in the back yard, I was thinking how this would be the last time I would be there and started to get a little sad, despite the fact that it has been considerably more than 20 years since I last lived there. I walked out to the front yard and looked up and down the street at each house (there are only 16 on the street). I started thinking about the make up of the street late 1966/early 1967 when all of the families moved into the brand new subdivision. There were the Campbell's (Ann and Greg), the Fegan's (Mary, Jeff and sorry, Mary--I can't remember your sister's name!), the Miller's (Matthew and Michelle), the Morrison's (Michelle and Monica), The Thompson's (Beth and Ted), the Roditis's (George), the Folk's (Kathy, Betsy and John), the Gayowski's (Gretchen and Michael) and several years later, the Chapman's (Mike, Saundra and Joy). Sadly, ALL of the original families have moved now except for George Roditis and the Miller's. I remember one winter when it was VERY cold and it had rained but then the road froze over and the next day Mary, Gretchen, Beth and I, along with several other neighbor children were ice skating on the street. That made me think of Mrs. Gayowski taking me, Gretchen and Mary over to Lake Frank to skate on the ice when we were 8 and 9 years old. I haven't seen most of those childhood friends for quite a while but my mother is still quite good friends with Mrs. Thompson, Mrs, Gayowski and Mrs. Fegan so I do get periodic updates. In some respects, it seems like it was not that long ago...and then it seems like ages. I did see Mr. Folk just a few weeks ago (he came up to me in a Home Depot because he recognized me...and I might I say, he has aged WONDERFULLY!) I haven't seen Mike Chapman in ages, either, but it is a small world...my babysitter is best friend's with his daughter. I just met his daughter on June 9 at my babysitter's graduation and she is a spitting image of Mike and Carolyn (King)! After I tripped down memory lane on Rim Rock Road, I rode around the entire neighborhood and tried to recall exactly WHO lived there back in elementary school days. I drove past the houses where the Harwood's (Helen, Kevin and Kent) lived (and I believe that the parents still live there) and then went by the houses of Steve Spahn, Terri Cross (the slumber parties there were always a BLAST!), Kim Spenski, Greg O'Gwin, Vince McCubbin, Phil Sandoe (I sure hung out at his house enough when I was 9-10!), Lisa and Lynn Moran, Tracy Willett, Marianne Murtaugh, Mara Paza, the late Jim Beck, Sharon Lorh (her mother taught me piano, along w/ Kim Spenski), Kim McDaniel, Joe and Tony Loebach, Patty Borhaus, Sue Mergenhagen (Boy, did I spend a lot of time at Sue's growing up, too!), Lynne Keady, Charlotte Fillorama (the fun house w/ the trampoline...and I now have one at my house and my kids and I love it as much as I did when I was a kid), Carla Jeffries (she used to have slumber parties and her mother was a World Class cook...her breakfasts' were awesome!), the Croker's (Melissa and Charlie bought the house from Charlie's parents years ago), Amy Warner, all of the Glautemmans boys (I seem to remember there were 6 of them!), Jenny LaRue, Anne Hage (I always think of Anne when I drive past her parent's house as it's directly on the way to my mom's) and Susie King. I know I drove past houses of more classmates/old friends but, frankly, I had a hard time remembering after about the 20th house! I am glad for my mother because I know she needs to downsize (even my 9 yr old son recognizes that she is overwhelmed--he wrote her a note on Wednesday after settlement that congratulated her on selling/buying and said he was glad she would not have to go up and down so many steps in her new place). However, despite the fact that it has been a generation since I lived there, I couldn't help but feel a little empty. 4810 is no longer mine and now it's just the memories. I am truly thankful that I have so many fond memories of growing up there, playing, having friends in the neighborhood and I sincerely hope that everyone from the old neighborhood is doing well in life. Even though our paths stopped crossing quite some time ago, none of you will ever be forgoten. (And even though she didn't go to Rock Creek Valley, I HAD to go by Rhea Dompka's house as I certainly spent enough time there growing up! She is one person I would really like to see again. She was just a beautiful person, inside and out.) I hope that your childhood memories are as fond as mine and I hope that the new owners of my mom's house love it as much as I loved it there. I also hope that when my two boys are adults (they're almost 6 and 9 right now), they have warm memories of their childhood, too.
