************************************************************ MIDNIGHT SUN ONLINE The Online Newsletter for Robert E. Peary High School Alumni Volume 10, Number 1 August 2005 MSO WEBSITE - http://www.pearyhs.org ************************************************************ ** 9-YEAR ANNIVERSARY ISSUE ** INTRODUCTION Greetings Huskies, In this issue... Intro (general news items and reunion info), Classmate Updates, and Obituary/Condolence Notices. HURRICANE 2005: Prayers for our alumni and families and friends affected by the hurricane from South Florida to the Gulf states through Tennessee and the Ohio Valley. You can help.... there are some links on the main page of MSO if you can assist those in need. ANNIVERSARY: We've made it to the 9-year mark.. and it's because of all of YOU, our alums, who stay in touch and participate regularly with the MSO and Peary family! Ron Bostwick (1977) had some suggestions for MSO for a big 10-year celebration next year - we'll keep you posted... and a reminder that timely items and information (unfortunately, often funeral arrangements) are posted on the webiste between newsletter distributions. We hope you'll occasionally check the main page of MSO for timely news. We encounter instances too often of "I didn't know in time." Items are posted immediately as soon as we find out, and the main listing of classmates is updated several times daily with changes to e-mail addreses and the addition of classmates who have come aboard. THANK YOU: Each Class has an online coordinator (or two) to keep track of your respective year classmate records. If not for these volunteers, people would remain "lost/missing" and never found or updated with reunion contact information. Thanks guys: 1963 Sari Hines McKay, 1964 Carol Cotton Hendrix, 1965 Eileen Brown Carter, 1966 Gale Senseman Privette, 1967 Audrey Gunnel Lohr, 1968 Barry Bone, 1969 Mike O'Neil, 1970 Ruth Kaneshiro Fujita, 1971 Barbara Dentz Riley, 1972 Jacquie Padgett, 1973 Committee of Al Selwyn and Diane Betz Griffin, 1974 Sandy Swarr Crawford, 1975 John Seng (and committee), 1976 Bob Lau, 1977 Sandy VanDusen, 1978 Mary Ann Naples Vann & Teresa Cross Wilson, 1979 Lisa Stein Aron and John Alvey, 1980 Janet Peters, 1981 Amy Hirsch Edberg, 1982 Karen Kushner Creel, 1983 Jeff Davis & Patty Toler, 1984 Colleen Jacques Callis & Jim Carr, 1985 Becky Sowers Stalnaker, 1986 Melissa Rinaldi Doetsch, and Staff/Faculty (vacant); plus Neal Pizzano (1976) for Alumni Music/Band Schedules, and Jim Hardman (1976) for technical advice and the MSO's Search Function (donated space, function, and indexing from his personal internet servers). JOAN PERCIVAL: Mrs. Percival would love to hear from some of her former students! See Al English's (1967) submission/info in this newsletter. [Thanks, Al!] PARKLAND JUNIOR (Middle) HIGH SCHOOL: Those who went to Parkland will appreciate what Patti Richardson (1978) has done. See her submission in this newsletter. [It was a lot of time and effort/work, so she could share the memories with you!] CLASS RING: Hoping for a success story... a fellow (non-Peary) whose mom had passed away in Ohio was going through a box of items after her death and came across Theresa Loebach's (1976) class ring - he got a hold of Maureen DiFulgo Bladen (1976) and arrangements are in-process via her brothers to get Terry her ring back! Thank goodness for the engravings. [This has happened in the past through the Peary networking, where Peary class rings were found in the oddest of places and returned to the owner. In fact, if anyone finds a 1976 class ring with the initials "RKL" inside - it was lost at JCC in Rockville (left in a mens room) around 1975/1976 - it's mine!] CELL PHONE TIP: From Joe Chornock (1972, President of Germantown Volunteer Fire Department) - see the article from the Post on the GVFD site for a good tip about your cell phone directory and "ICE" - http://gvfd29.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=246 PRAYERS FOR ALUMNI/FAMILIES: Cheryl Hart White (1968 - cheryl.hart@pcao.pima.gov), Rick White (1973 - rwhite@shear-precision.com), David White, Jr. (1971 - Scidrum48@aol.com), and Diane White Killen (1979 - rkillen@execpc.com). Their father, Dr. David White, has been in ICU in Arizona with heart complications. Many may remember the Whites' mom, referred to by everyone as "Mrs. W." Mrs. W. passed away August 2000. For an update on Dr. White from the family (as of August 2), see http://www.pearyhs.org/text/white_david.html And Hank Heller (1983 - hheller@effingham.k12.ga.us) was diagnosed with a tumor (top of head) on July 25th. In my 22nd triathlon season and will be getting my Private Pilot license soon (hopefully). Future Plans: Starting to build my retirement home in southern Delaware on the water. ********** From: Linda Robbins (1978) Date: Wed, 27 Jul 2005 Subject: Update I found out about the website from my dear friend, Kim Spenski Villanti [1978], who told me about it years ago. Occupation: Graphic Designer/Screenwriter Memorable Incidents: Always loved the variety shows and the great behind-the-scenes fun we had! Kim Spenski and I did all those Carol King songs and I particularly remember "Hard Rock Cafe" (Stacy Novak played piano and even Mr. Hassler played percussion.) Since High School: Have traveled a fair amount (love Scotland and could live out the rest of my days there if I didn't have friends and family in the States) and am now renting the house in Aspen Hill where I grew up. I've worked at a brokerage firm, social services agency and at my current job at a company that provides high security paper shredders to the feds and "spook" agencies. Received my BS in Zoology at Univ. of MD but my guidance counselor at Peary never told me I couldn't make any money in zoology so, have been writing scripts for about 15 years in those spare minutes not spent working, commuting, and generally living life, and just signed with a manager out in Los Angeles last year. Excited about the prospects: they've sent out my espionage/thriller to several production companies and I have an option on a mythic thriller with a director attached and we're now looking at A-list actors for the lead. Wish me luck (and buy a ticket when they come out, if you can!) Future Plans: Future plans involve leaving my current job as soon as I get the call from H-wood so I can write full time. I also have a couple of Redskins tickets (2 seats) left for this season (2 games: Chargers & Bears) so, if anyone's interested please give me a call. I sell them at face value and just keep them to provide friends and family with a chance to go. Hopefully, it'll be a good season this year. Memorable Teachers: Who doesn't remember, "Sir, yes, sir!" echoing down the hall from Mr. Clark's room? Ms. Dawson was outstanding and I remember being awed by Mr. Gibbs' productions (especially "The King and I" with Sue Alexander as Anna.) Cheering Skip Johnson and Mike Callahan on in basketball. The time Dr. Dunn made us kneel down to see if our skirts touched the ground. Oh, Dr. Dunn, I hope you don't see the dresscodes of the new millenium. He used to say if you want to look pretty, run hard and get some roses in your cheeks, don't wear makeup. Since High School: Earning a living, parenting, studying people for forty years, growing up! Sold real estate for numerous years and returned to administrative work later in life. Future Plans: Grow up some more! Will probably wait a substantial amount of time to retire. When I do, I'm going to garden, paint, and learn piano. Memorable Teachers: Clesta Dickson. Business. We gave her such a hard time and she gave us her best anyway. She used to say "eyes here" students to get us quiet and paying attention. One day, I piped up, "I's here too teacher." She was upset enough to leave the room, but she hence hosted my honor society induction tea anyway. Class and Character. But the time she said "return your carriages" and all the boys extracted them from the typewriters and took them up to her at the front of the room was just too much. She almost lost it. But I used her as a reference all through the sixties. Siblings (cousin-brothers and cousin-sisters) are in order of grad: Karen Postorino (Rademaker), Billy Cross, Ernie Postorino, Vickie Cross (Broda), Terri Postorino (Fyock) Thanks to all the Peary folks who honored my brother Billy Cross last week by paying their respects at his funeral or sending a representative. It meant a lot. Peary folks are great folks. ********** From: Mary Speelman Willett (1976) Date: Fri, 29 Jul 2005 Subject: Update I found out about the website from Family and Friends. So many people enjoy the site. Thx Bob. Memorable Incidents: Lunchtime in the gas lines with friends. My gutsy girlfriend streaking. Oh, academics . . . Since High School: I graduated a year early with Vicki MacDonald. Moved to Takoma Park with friends. A learning experience in itself. Married Dave in 77. Raised two daughters in Urbana, MD. Built two homes, renovated two homes. We are back in the Aspen Hill area to enjoy our employment finale years, commute free, with golf and airports nearby. A lot happens in 30 years . . . Let's just say its been a good life so far! Future Plans: Work, play, enjoy family, friends and the sunshine in the south. Actually, we tend to live in hyper-time - so much to do, so little time. Memorable Teachers: Minty Glass - Art teacher. I would complete the assignments, (Grade A work) then head across the hall to the leathercraft class. She would look the other way as would the leather instructor. Enjoyed a two-for that semester thx to their leniency. Mr. Thomas - English - Mediabag (progressive class in 75). He managed to teach an interesting class without the promised classroom instructional materials. He could improvise. Mr. John Thomas - Sociology - He brought his personal experiences into the classroom. His archaeological digs and immersion into the cultures of those areas were fascinating. Too much respect to cut his class. Brothers and Sisters: Jennifer 1968, John 1972, Brian 1975, Joan 1977 from Peary. Jacqueline 1981 and Stephen 1984 from Thomas Johnson in Frederick. My dearest friend is Gail King Ziminsky - class of 71. Living back in Aspen Hill - let's just say "Toto, we are not in Kansas anymore" lol. Janet Mischou got me involved in volunteering for MCARC (now the ARC of MC) back in high school. Moving back into the area, I saw that they were still around and going stronger than ever. I now work for the ARC teaching toddlers with autism. Gratifying work. Kids are great teachers too. ;0) ********** From: Linda S. I've been a freelance artist (still am ocassionally), a secretary, an HR rep, a training rep. and have recently started to make my contribution to the public school system of Texas. Along the way... I received an Associates in Advertising from good ol' Montgomery College; moved to Texas; wrecked my motorcycle and it wrecked me (took 8 yrs for complete healing); got married to the nicest Texas "redneck" you'd ever want to meet; completed a BS in Business (the BS was a concentration in Math, which turns out to be useful toward my teaching Math); just recently obtained teacher certification; and had my 2 gorgeous kids - one who's on her way to college, and the other on his way to 2nd grade. (Note: although there's 10+ years between them, they're from the same husband/same marriage!). We're happy in our own little slice of Texas. Future Plans: For now, just becoming the best high school math teacher aroun' these here parts, and raising up Johnny! Memorable Teachers: Mr. Boyd and Mr. Clark - the funniest guys on the Peary block! They made learning history ever so fun and interesting. (I've nearly forgotten the pain of all those DETAILED maps and outline-form-notebooks they insisted on every 6 weeks!). Mr. Lawry, the Physics teacher from MIT, who could come down to our stratosphere and really teach physical science. [Okay, I was a studious nerd then, and still am!] Sorry I missed the 25th. Guess I've been too preoccupied with living (sometimes struggling) to look back much. Maybe I'll see some of ya'll for the 30th. As of June '05, the school is closed until it reopens in the fall of '07 as the Parkland Magnet Middle school for Aerospace Technology. Anyway, the school has remained mostly unchanged for all these years, so I went in and took a bunch of pictures of the place before demolition/construction began. The best of these I posted on a web site. And as with most things computer, I got carried away and ended up scanning a bunch of yearbook pictures from the early to mid '70s and posting them on the web site, too. Love to hear from others at Peary! ********** From: Tim Noble (1983) Date: Fri, 12 Aug 2005 Subject: Update I found out about the website from Scott Stoolmiller. Occupation: Registered Nurse, Spouse: Wendy (Stage Manager) Memorable Incidents: Drama Club, using the Tech Crew to get out of class, and being the token outspoken class liberal in Mr. Clark's History classes - The past twenty two years have taught me that I was right. Since High School: I graduated from Carnegie Mellon in 19988 with a degree in Technical Theater, then moved to New York. I worked as a carpenter, welder and draftsman for many construction shops and theaters, building scenery for Broadway, Off-Broadway, Television, Fashions shows, and the like. Soon after moving to NYC I met Wendy while working on a show, and we eventually got married in 1994. Also in 1994 I started my own shop (Noble Theatrical Productions) in Brooklyn, which grew from a one man operation (me) into a major scene shop with 40 employees. We had to shut down in 2001 - I was better at building scenery that running a business. I went to work for Hudson Scenic (the biggest Broadway shop in NYC) as a draftsman, but my heart was no longer in the business. I became an Emergency Medical Technician and went to nursing school; I received my license in March and now work at Lenox Hill Hospital in critical care (specifically the surgical step down unit). Anybody who loves science, likes working with their hands, hates sitting at a desk, and has a fairly strong stomach should try nursing: it is a very hard job, but can be even more rewarding. Future Plans: Get my masters and become a nurse practioner. Memorable Teachers: Mr. Clarke and Mrs. Rosen were truly excellent teachers, and Mr. Horvat was an inspiration for my current career. ********** From: Paul Valaer (1968) Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2005 Subject: Update I found the website while surfing. Occupation: Mechanical Inspector, Significant Other: Sharon (Electrical Engineer), Children: Destiny 31, Ryan 28; Grandchildren: Jake 8, Jason 1 Memorable Incidents: Getting Suspended for reciting this poem "In days of old, when nights were bold and toilets weren't invited. They dropped their load upon the road and went away contented" Since High School: Naval air reconaissance. Good employment in a number of companies in silicon valley as a mechanical inspector. Married/Divorced with two children. Just recently came back from my second vacation in Cabo San Lucas Future Plans: To become a consultant in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. To learn how to use computers effectively and find out about all you guys. Memorable Teacher: Kershner, who taught me auto mechanics because he told me about the carburettor that had extreme fuel efficiency but which Texaco had bought the patent for. Seems so pertinent now. Comments: Good Morning Vietnam. ********** From: carol clark embrey (1972) Date: Sun, 14 Aug 2005 Subject: newsletter update Our son Matt graduated from Urbana high school this year, 2005. He plans to take the year off and join the work force. He is currently working at Bailey's Pub and Grille in Germantown. Our younger son Bryan is starting his freshman year at Urbana and is on the freshman football team. Sure brings back memories of Peary football. ********** From: James Conte (1983) Date: Sun, 14 Aug 2005 Subject: Update The MSO site? Just wanted to fill you all in on what's coming up for me. I finally have news to tell!! I got a part on the new tv show called "Over There." http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/overthere/main.html My episode will air SEPTEMBER 14 Wednesday Night at 10pm on F/X. I play Claire in the show and I am leading an AA meeting. (gee, that was real acting for me, huh? It's a small role but it was a blast shooting. Two films I produced, "Jewz N the Hood" and "Queer Eye for the Homeless Guy" have been accepted into film festivals. It seems every time I write an email informing everyone of where and when, it gets accepted again. I'm so thrilled. While I did not act in either of these, I produced both of them. Put them together. It was my first real paying Producer gig!!! If you would like to know where and when after this article is published, plesae just send me an email and I'll put you on a list. Especially if you have a film festival in your town. "Jewz" was accepted into Rhode Island International Film Festival (early August) and has just been accepted into Westwood International Film Fest. "Queer Eye" has just been accepted into Temecula Valley Film Festival. A short film I did, "The Last Great Informercial" premiered at the Chicago Indie Film Festival in July. It will also be showing at the LA INternational Film Festival here in LA in a couple of weeks!! (Sept. 12th) http://www.chicagoindiefest.com/ I'm very excited as it seems to be getting some good press out there. It's directed by Ben Kalb and it's really funny. I have three great scenes and they are pretty funny monologues. I play a midwestern housewife! :) "Domino" will be released on October 14, 2005. http://dominomovie.com/ You can check out pictures on my site from the shoot if you haven't already! You should check out the trailor! It rocks!! And, last but not least, we are making a 10 minute musical short comedy. I know, to those who remember me in high school, I don't sing. I know!! But, guess what? I am now! hahah. It's really funny and already has buzz in Florida and in North Carolina. The site is www.aperfectlifethemovie.com and right now we have only the front page. I am producing it, co writer and starring as well. I'm very excited as we start shooting this Saturday. I am hoping to bring it home early next year for a screening!! Thanks to all of you for your great letters, kind words and encouragement to keep plugging!! I know it is only gonna get even more wonderful from here on!! Write when you get a chance :) Allie Raye (Or Lisa to those of you I've known since I was an egg) *********************************** *********** QUICK TAKES *********** *********************************** Greg Luther - Class of 1981 How I found out about the website?
